1 Year Old Hates Sippy cup...Need Ideas!

Dear Moms!

My son is one and HATES sippy cup. I have been trying to give it to him since he was 8 mo., but he has shown absolutely no desire to drink from it. My Ped said, by 15 mo. a baby should be on sippy, no bottles, and that of course put some pressure on me. I started pushing it a bit more, as a result -- he screams and cries real tears even though I am trying to make it a game. I have tried all kinds of sippy cups, didn't matter...
Do you have any ideas about what I could do to help him with sippy?
Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you so much everybody!
We are gonna try the Nuby cup, seemed like a lot of moms thought it was great. Got it yesterday at Target. But I have learned from you guys that it's better to take it easy. As one Mom has said: "Baby's peace of mind comes first".
Straws are the next step!

Have fantastic holidays everybody!!!!

At walmart they have bottles that come with 3 different nipples. They are great!! They start out with a bottle nipple the go to a sippy cup nipple then they have the sports bottle nipple. they teach the child to reconize the bhottle and to drink from it no matter what nipple is on it!! They reall work well i broke my little girl at 10 months from her bottle!!

my son hates the true sippy cups, but loves the cups with a straw. at first i made a big deal about pouring myself a cup of juice in the same type of cup as his and then pouring him a cup with the lid on. we would then sit down together and drink the juice with lots of "MMMM's". i kept the bottle for early morning and bedtime and then phased those out too. he also loves the tiny juice boxes too. good luck!

My 19 month old son was weaned from a bottle to a sippy at 15 months but at 12 months he started taking the sippy cup and still took the bottle at bed/naptime as well as 1st thing in the morning.
I used/use Nuby siipy cup w/a straw and that is the one that he really likes and still uses it to the day.

Why don't you try a lidded cup with a straw? Only do this with supervision, but it can be a good alternative. They do make cups like this that are spill-proof, too.

My boys have never liked regular sippy cups. However, they absolutely love the sippy cups with straws. They actually learned how to drink out of a straw when they were about a year old. About the bottles, I wouldn't worry too much about it. My twins had their night bottle until they were almost 18 months old. My youngest stopped taking a bottle just after his first birthday. It will all work out!

I would also recommend the Nuby brand cup. That was the first my ds took a liking too -- that and those disposible kinds. I started him around 8 mos for water.

Also, have you tried just a regular cup? Maybe he just wants to drink from a big kid cup? I realize that this isn't optimal, but maybe if you just put a tiny bit in and got him used to it he's transition easier to the sippy?

I used the "Nuby" sippy cups b/c the spout part is so similar to a bottle nipple. It's soft and flexible. Although I breastfed my daughter, the transition was fairly easy that way. My friend did the same thing with her son, from formula in a bottle to formula in "Nuby" cup, then switching it to milk.
p.s. the "Nuby" cups are cheap, too! We had about six and would let her pick which one she wanted, so it was more like "her choice" to use it, you know? Instead of bottle vs. sippy cup, it was red vs. blue. Good luck!!!

1st it will be hard.. Have you tryed the nubby cups they are a good transion they work like a bottle. Try giving it to him durring the day. and make a big deal out of it you might try it yourself. and see he will try a straw give him a little coke and see if he dosen't try to get some more.
