How to get dog stains out of carpeting

Ok, so let me just say YUCK. My father's dog is a nervous Nellie who hides when she sees her own shadow. She also has a history of accidents in the house. It is a bit humorous too - she is an 85-lb German Sheppherd. =)

She had a bladder infection last week and was peeing and pooping in the house (always in the same spot too, the sub floor must be toast by now). Well, the carpeting is not coming clean no matter how many times you clean it and she is still peeing and pooping there even though she does not have a bladder infection anymore. I think she can smell it and it makes her have to go but we don't smell it. We need something that can get rid of whatever she can still smell. I really want to help my mother gets these stains out but I am running out of ideas. It's light colored carpet and my parents have well water. Any suggestions?

You need a stain remover with an enzyme product or your dog will still return to the spot and soil it. Some products are: Shaklee Get Clean Nature Bright Laundry Booster and Stain Remover, Outright Pet Odor Eliminator by the Bramton Company or Nature's Miracle. (always check a small corner with the product to make sure it does not take the color out of your carpet - If it does, sponge the area with a mild ammonia solution.)

After soaking or blotting the area, saturate the area with the product of your choice. This is the important part: Cover the area while still wet with clear plastic and anchor it down with a heavy object. This will give the product time to eliminate the protein from the urine or feces. Leave it covered for 48 hours. Then, uncover and let it dry for 10 days. Once it is dry, remove any remaining visible spot with Spot Shot Instant Stain Remover or basic carpet cleaner.
I know this may sound involved but it is really not that bad - It is the only way to remove the proteins in the soiled area that keep encouraging you pet to resoil it.

All of my info ( except for the Shaklee product) came from a book "Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean" by Linda Cobb

Good luck - It worked for me as I retrained a 2 year old Yorkshire Terrier.

Hi, we have 2 cats and they have pee'd all over our house. We have not found any of the odor eliminators to work at all. Our best advice is to use a steam cleaner and steam clean the area. The other item seems to work best for us is by woolite and is called the oxy deep steam pet. My husband does all the cleaning of the pee and puke stains and he is very anal about this. He LOVES this product and just daps it on the puke stain and it is gone. I would highly recommend this product. Backed by my husband :)

I used this recipe when my older cat urinated in places other than his litterbox. I actually purchased the recipe off of ebay. It was successful for me. Good Luck, here is the recipe:

Pet odor and stain remover

Thanks for purchasing this recipe and I'm sure you
will be satisfied!

Here's what you'll need....

MATERIALS:

12oz. Hydrogen Peroxide

16oz or greater PLASTIC bottle ( I find sport drink
bottles with pull up caps work the best)

2 teaspoons of Baking Soda

1 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap

Black light (optional, though recommended)

PROCEDURE:

First you need to make the solution. You can mix it
in a plastic bowl or right in your bottle. Pour all
the ingredients in and mix well with any type of
plastic utensil. I simply swish it around in the
bottle until all the ingredients are mixed
2. After you make the solution, you'll need to find
the stain (this is where the black light comes in if
you don't have one or know where the stain is then
skip to step 3) Turn off the lights
and use the black light to scan the area and find the
urine. It will glow under the black light. You may
have seen this procedure on TV when they investigate
dirty hotel rooms.

  1. Now to clean the area (you may want to do a spot
test on your carpet though I have never had a problem
with this solution, the carpet may look lighter in
dirty areas because it has also removed the stain )
Pour your solution evenly on the affected area so it
gets deep into the carpet and underling pad.

  2. Allow to completely dry and vacuum area to remove
    the baking soda!

Now you're finished and the odor should be completely
gone. Your dog will not smell anything and so will not
urinate on the area again! You can use this solution
to get out tough stains, too. It can also be used in
the car!

One of your other posts mentioned an enzyme cleaner called "nature's miracle" . That's a product I have used for years. You can buy it in a spray or you can buy an enzyme cleaner in a more concentrated form, quart size at a pet store - like Petsmart. Something with an enzyme should eliminate the smell. You will probably have to get the carpets professionally cleaned, and they can heavily spot treat but make sure they use an "enzyme" cleaner - not JUST a deodorizer as it will just mask the smell, not eliminate it. Make sure you are using some kind of water other than well water unless it is a filtered well - a lot of wells have high iron (hard water) content. Good luck!

If the dog is always going in the same spot, and this stain has been repeatedly treated, Id say best way to get rid of it is to get rid of it. Rather Id say thats about the only way. I have a boxer who had some anxiety when we moved into our new home, and most stains we were able to get rid of no problem. However there's one spot that she regularly visited and it's now ruined. We waited a while till we knew she was over it,(repeatedly pouring a scent cover up all over it)then I called Chem-dry to clean the carpets.....didn't work, so I cut out the area and low and behold it was the sub floor which was retaining the smell and was totally rotted. We had to just replace the entire thing, and decided that carped was just not conducive to psycho pet ownership. I love wood! It cleans beautifully and is sealed so the sub floor is fine and soils are not leaving behind any scents.

PS I have used every enzyme cleaner, and eliminator out there, as well as purchased the tv products, and every home remedy I could find while googling a solution to this. If the sub floor is damaged, you will not get the smell out, and if it is an area that has been repeatedly treated, the carpet will usually be ruined. Sorry

I had the same issue with my dog. I searched online and I was told by many sites not to steam clean the rug or use warm or hot water. That only sets the smell.

Woolite for pets works well, but I really like a product called Kids and Pets. For me it is the best product for smell. You pour it on and leave it. Works great. I buy it at Target, but have seen it at most stores.

Good Luck!

Buy Natures Miracle and follow the directions of the bottle. If the area is a bad saturate the area with the natures miracle and let sit to soak the surrounding area and the sub floor. The sop up the extra moisture with towles and let dry.
It sounds like they have a house breaking issue and andd to go back to crate training or confine the dog ina small area and not allow her free rein in the house unless she make potty outside

Good luck

Sandy,
There is a product called Kids & Pets, Wal-Mart or Target sells it. It's an enzyme and removes the order. The trick to it though, is you have to soak the carpet, blot it up and soak it again, then let dry naturally. I don't know if you will get the stain out, you may have to call a carpet cleaning service for that, but it will remove any odor she can smelll and may stop her.

check out omahavaccine.com for what products they have. Also, Resolve Carpet Cleaner makes a version that is specifically for pet stains. Lastly (and my favorite) is the Oreck Carpet Cleaner for pet stains (it's the orange lid). Although for the Oreck (yes, the vaccume company) I prefer the aerosal vs. the spray.

Hi Sandy,
I know with my cat we got a product with enzymes in it called Natures Miracle. I found it at Petco and Petsmart in the cat isle. I am sure they would have something in the dog section that would do the same thing. My cousin is a vetrinarian and he told me that anything with enzymes should take the smell away! Let me tell you that this product works and works well! Our one cat (she is since gone now) was peeing on the carpent ever since we brought our son home. She was quite jealous! We were not even aware of the area that she was peeing in, because her urine did not have that overpowering amonia smell to it. We decided to get one of those black lights they advertise on TV (believe me, get one and use it everywhere. You will not beleive where urine stains can be and not just dog ones!). We then discovered an area (6"x5") of our rug that was covered in urine! Talk about YUCK!!! We bought 2 gallons of this Natures Miracle and had to use a watering can to apply it, but it worked! I would look for it at Petco or Petsmart and ask about it for dogs! Good Luck!

P.S. From what I know about the product is that the enzymes kill the smell for the animal too, so they would not keep peeing in the same spot!

One more thing. Do not use any kind of carpet cleaner on the stains before using enzymes. The carpet cleaner is too harsh and the enzymes won't work!

I like Kids and Pets, too (at Wal-mart)- it really gets rid of the odor- works great on mattresses, too, by the way- but I will say that my female dog's urine seems to have bleached out the carpet- she is not spayed and unfortuately as much as I clean and it smells great, the carpet still has these lighter spots... Good luck!

Regular household cleaners won't work. You need a pet ENZYME cleaner. I like Nature's Miracle, which you can get at Pet Smart. However, if this has been going on for some time, it's doubtful any cleaner will help because the carpet, padding, and subfloor are probably completely permeated and ruined. Replacement is probably your best bet at this point.

Other than illness, a trained dog should never mess in your house. German Shepherds, especially females, are usually very easy to housebreak and respond well to training. The dog's issues are behavioral and can be corrected with plenty of exercise, a fixed eating schedule, and training. As the mom of a German Shepherd female, I wish you guys luck. They're great dogs and can learn new behaviors, even later in life.

I use Urine B Gone that I purchase at Walmart in the cleaning supply aisle.

Pull up that disgusting carpet that any animal will always "go to" and put down hard wood floors. They're not that expensive and much easier to keep clean. My neighbor just pulled up their carpeting because their 6 year ol has had terriable breathing problems. They have had carpet cleaners out and tho the carpet looked clean the child still couldn't breathe. They pulled out the caarpet and found the pee and poop stains in rings on the underside of the carpet plus, dust pans full of dirt swept up from his rom alone. No wonder the child couldn't breath. Carpeting holds every nasty thing that can penetrate it.

Good Morning ~

I had the same problem ~ we used Shaving Cream ~ Barbersol ~ you can get it at the Dollar Store ~ all you do is dampen the spot and then apply the white foam ~ let it sit for about 15-20 minutes and then RUB clean ~ you might have to do this a couple of time depending on how soiled it is ~ it will also give it that shaving cream scent ~ LOL

Good Luck!

We had our carpets cleaned by Stanley Steemer & they gave us a bottle of their spot remover, which works well. Before that we used Resolve. If the dog is going in the same spot, try putting those pads there too. When my dog had her bi earlier this summer, she peed everywhere, but never pooped. Good luck!

Try a pet store like PETSMART or PETCO, they have products that you can put down to deter this habit.

have you tired kids and pets it is a rug cleaner and spot remover. you can get it at most supermarkets in the rug cleaner section. i have used it on carpets and stubborn stains on clothes and it works well. good luck!

Put 1 part vinegar, one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area. Let it sit about 5 minutes and then soak it up with a towel. You may need to repeat. It works wonders! I love vinegar!
