Bugs on a toilet seat, anyone?

SEEKING HEALTHY SNACKS

Suzy B. from Mesa, AZ asks:
Hi there! I am looking for some suggestions on healthy snacks for my 2 boys. Unfortunately our 4 year-old does not like fruit. :( Does anyone have some other healthy snack ideas other than goldfish and pretzels? Thank you for taking time to read my request.

Dena T. from Tucson answers:
We do Mozzarella cheese cut into squares and then put chow mein (hard dry noodles) in them for antenna and legs, and raisins for eyes:-)

Meg S. from Albuquerque answers:
There are many snacks besides fruit. With the peanut butter and the fun name, your boys may be more likely to eat this:

-Bugs on a Toilet Seat:
fresh/dry apple rings spread with peanut butter. Place “raisin” bugs on “apple ring” seat.

Hope your boys enjoy the fun.

Kristina R. from Gilbert answers:
My kids love to do “Ants on a Log” – celery with peanut butter and raisins.

Also in the Kraft food and family magazine they had a couple of cute ideas. One was to cut an apple in half, put strawberry cream cheese on it, then dip it in fruity pebbles. My kids love to do that one. We sometimes make corn muffins. Trail mix is good, too. Good luck

Lynn D. from Durango answers:
Got these from a friend…

-Banana bites: Slice a banana into one inch chunks, roll chunks in honey (or agave nectar), then roll coated chunks in wheat germ
Mack liked to eat these using a toothpick.

-

Mini-bagel sandwiches:
Toast a mini-bagel, then spread a light coating of peanut or almond butter on each half. Slice a Granny Smith apple so that it is in the shape of a circle (slices should be fairly thin)
Top with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese
Put in toaster oven (or under broiler) until cheese is melted and browned
As an extra flavor treat – spread a light coating of jelly with the peanut or almond butter before other toppings are added.

Wendy B. from Mesa answers:
I know this is going to sound crazy, but here goes…. My kids loved (especially in the summer) frozen veggies. They liked to eat frozen corn, peas, and carrot squares still frozen. They thought that was the biggest treat. Also, when their mac and cheese was too hot I would put frozen peas in it to cool it off. Then they would eat the mac and cheese and the cheesy peas too! I had to get some nutritional value into mac and cheese :)

Jennifer R. from Albuquerque answers:
Mini pita bread/crackers with hummus/peanut butter/etc. as a dip; granola bars; string or cubed cheese; frozen yogurt. What about vegetables? My kids LOVE broccoli & baby carrots – that’s the only veggie I can get them to eat; dry cereal; mini muffins; graham crackers; hard boiled eggs. Goldfish now come in a whole grain one that tastes the same. At least you’re not giving out candy & chocolate for a snack ; ) – ya know!
