yep, you have to add salt and then there will be no question as to when it is working. I use cold mist as well, the warm mist scare me! They get VERY hot and make the room VERY hot as well! The last time I tried to use it, my son's room reached about 90 degrees within minutes! The cold mist are great and they are recommended for the resistance to bacterial growth as well. Great in the summer because it will keep the room cool as well! I really dont' think it would do anything for allergies anyway?... I could be wrong.

Hi, M.! I have not used the warm steam vaporizer but the cool mist one. However, I would imagine that you should be able to see the steam coming out of the vaporizer when is turned on.

Hi M.!

I also bought a vicks steam vaporizer for my son this past winter season, to help him through common colds and try to keep congestion down. I bought the vapor steam liquid medication to go along with it and I have been happy with it so far. I add the water, a little salt to it, the liquid medication in the medication chamber on top, plug in, light comes on and in 5-10 minutes the room will begin to fill with the aroma of the vapor steam. The best place to put the vaporizer is on the floor about 4 feet away from the crib, this way the vapor is rising up. However, place your hand above it and the hot steam will burn you, so I'm always careful to unplug it, replace the outlet guard and place it high on a shelf before I get my little one out of his crib in the mornings. Another option is vicks baby rub, but I like the steam voporizer so much better!

You should be able to feel and see the steam coming out. If you read the directions, it may tell you to add a teaspoon of salt. It will help produce the steam.
Just be real careful, it does get VERY hot!!

Hi M.,

I bought the same thing when my (then 4 month old) had a cold, and I couldn't tell it was working. I think you have to be very close to it and/or be in a very enclosed small space with it to feel it working at all. I took mine back because I couldn't figure out how to help her get decongested using it. Instead I bought the children's Vicks Vaporub. It smells very nice (compared to the adult's version) and seems to help with congestion.

Hi, my pediatrician recommends a cool mist vaporizer instead, I think mostly b/c there is less chance for a burn injury to the little ones. I used this the entire 1st yr of my son's life to keep his eczema clear and it worked like a charm! good luck.

Hi Melody, You can tell that the vaporizer is working when you see the steam coming out. When I use a vaporizer I put a little salt in the water so it works a little faster. M.
