To Bank or Not to Bank??

I am having baby #2 and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on banking the cord blood? I donated with my first baby. I am not having anymore children, so I this is my last chance. Not sure if it is worth the $$. Cancer does not run in my family but heart disease does in both mine and my husbands.

What can I do next?

We banked my son's, not sure if we'll bank #2's since he/she could use my son's if necessary. If the expense doesn't rule it completely out of the question, I think it's worth it. I think there are so many future possibilities for its use. Who knows what it could be used for in 10-30 yrs. I guess it's just another sort of insurance. You need car insurance, you might have life insurance, this is just another sort of health insurance. You may never need it, but it's there for peace of mind. It is expensive though (I think it was around $1500 initially, then is $100/yr. for storage w/ CBR).

We donated with our first too. Our main reasons for not banking were that at present, there aren't that many things it's used for and we figure that the overall liklihood of us EVER needing it are very small. Not worth the expense in my opinion. Whereas if you donate, it will almost definitely be used by someone who needs it. Hopefully, what goes around comes around and if you end up wishing you had it later on you can use cord blood that someone else donated.

Sad alert --

After watching my 22 year old cousin die from a very aggressive form of ovarian cancer, there was no question in my mind what we should do. So we banked.

IF it's not a hardship financially, I say go for it. If you have the money, isn't it better to have the "insurance" policy?

Good luck with your birth!

I banked both my kid's cb. There's enough research to support the bennefits if god forbid we actually need it. It is a cost to initially store but CBR is reasonable for storage. Good luck!
