I'm taking my son on his 1st flight next week, he'll be 7 weeks, and need some advice. I'm breastfeeding and would rather pump before the flight than breastfeed on the plane. With the regulations for taking liquids on the aircraft, will i be able to do this? Also any other advice would be great. Thankfuly its only a short flight from Colorado Springs to Kansas City! Thanks :)

What can I do next?

Congratulations on your first flight with a baby! Our son took his first flight at 6 weeks and our new daughter was just 7 days old on her first flight! Let me ease your fears here. Flying with them this early is a cake walk! The whole ear issue does not apply to infants but will when he reaches about 2. As for the liquids, this rule dose NOT apply for infants. You can bring filled bottles with you and send them through screening. I am not sure how you are flying but we always bought a seat for the babies, simply because we can put the car seat next to me and relax. If you are going to hold him that is fine also, lots of people do to save money but to be honest most airlines discount the infant seats to almost nothing until they reach two.
As for the typical fears, will he cry? He might but most babies sleep the whole flight. The white noise soothes them. Will the people on the plane complain if he cries? Who cares!? At one time I am sure they were babies and cried also! If you are flying alone, your flight attendant and seat buddies are your new best friends. Don’t feel at all bad if you need to ask for your bottle warmed they are more then welcome to do that for you. If you need to go to the bathroom you don’t have take the baby with you. The flight attendant would be more than happy to hold him. Trust them, where can they go? Its not like they can run away with them. Oh and for changing, there is much debate over this subject. Some change the baby right on the seat, kinda gross if you ask me. Most airplanes, even the little ones have changing stations in the bathrooms. The table is usually right above the toilet and you just pull it down. Not a lot of room but a lot less mess if there is a tinkle incident!
Two good web sites to look at are www.tsa.gov and look for what you can and can’t take… another awesome place you can look is www.flyertalk.com and you can look for traveling with children sub board where my husband is an avid poster as well as most people on there our children have all flown more than most adults! Anyway please feel free to email me if you have any other questions and great luck on your flight!! Let us know how he does!

Hey J., I think you should be fine taking a bottle with you. My daughter was bottle fed by the time we flew but I recall reading somthing about allowances for breastfeeding moms. Try looking up the info on your airlines website. I want to say you can take 4 oz?? but not sure. good luck to you.

Rules have changed...breastmilk can now be brought through security and on board anytime: with or WITHOUT a child in tow. They got a severe beatdown by moms (and dads) who were trying to travel to their baby with stored pumped milk. But that ONLY applies to milk, you can't bring juice boxes through security if Junior is not with you.

I did this with my daughter when she was 4 months old and had no problems. I had milk pumped and in a cooler with ice packs. I told the screeners that I had milk and formula and had to show them. I forget if I had to put it through the x-ray or if I was able to carry it as I walked through. But there was no problem. FAA guidelines allow you to carry milk as long as you are traveling with an infant and there are no restrictions on amount. Happy flying!

Hi J.~ I fly to kansas city alot the flight is great and short... You can take milk with you juice whatever the baby needs... I have a 19m old and we just went about a month ago to KC and I took a full cup of milk and full cup of juice in sippys and it is fine.. I have called ahead before and they told me that that was all fine just have the bottle in a zip lock bag so when you go though u can pull it out and it is protected from the germs cause they will pick it up so it is better in a zip lock... Good Luck....
