Seeking a Midwife

I just recently found out I'm pregnant with my third baby. I'm reasonably high risk. I had a C-section with my first and a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cessarian) with my second.

I'd like to give birth outside of a hospital if at all possible. I'd like a birthing center, but am also okay with a homebirth. I'm looking for a midwife/birthing center.

If any of you know of any, even if you don't know them well, would you let me know?

Also, if anyone has experiences with the midwives at HCMC, I'd like to hear about that. They are who I'll most likely go with, if I can't find a good fit anywhere else.

I have kind of a granola/hippie attitude towards pregnancy and birth and I'm hoping to find a care giver with a similar philosophy.

What can I do next?

I had a water birth at HCMC with the midwives there and it was amazing!!!! I highly recommend the birthing center there because you are totally in charge but OB is just across the hall if there are any complications. We also hired a doula but it was our first child. It was such a great experience, I hope things work out for you.

I did my birth at home. There are a lot of home birth midwives in our area, but the birth centers closed down because insurance wouldn't cover them. I used www.minnesotabirthnetwork.com to find my midwife. I guess there's one birth center still operating in WI (Hudson?) but that's quite a drive. My midwife, Rachel, has a website with contact info at www.riversongmidwifery.com I heard she might be doing med school, but she could be a good resource. Good luck in your search. Feel free to contact me if you have more questions. I also found good info at the Birth Collective. They meet once a month in St. Paul and Edina and maybe someplace else.

I would contact Nichi Hirsh of My Healthy Beginning. She has a great network of providers and is having her second homebirth next month. Her web address is www.MyHealthyBeginning.com and she is always happy to speak to mothers about holistic lifestyle and parenting choices.
Please feel free to tell her I sent you her way.
In Gratitude,
