Red Patches on Face

My 8 year old daughter had some light pink patches, about 3 the size of my fingernails, on the right side of her face near her nose and on her cheek last night. She woke up and now they are really red and obvious. She says they don't itch and aren't bothering her but they look bad and I don't know what they are. She is otherwise normal and healthy. Of course we are preparing to leave to visit family for Thanksgiving so I don't have time to drop in to see a doctor (of course we would if it were serious or urgent. Should I be worried (I'll be worried anyway, I don't need permission so that's a silly question!!!)? Does anyone have an idea of what this could be? Should I put anything on it or leave it alone? Thanks so much for your help.

My daughter had something similar. Her pediatrician recommended aquafor and if that didn't work to put a little cortizone cream on the red spots. The cortizone cream cleared it right up. It tends to flare up if she is in the pool alot (chlorine) or with the cahnge of seasons.

hmmmm has she had chicken pocks vaccine? not all over body, just face? if your insurance is great for where you're going might have to just get it checked out even if in ER to make sure not a contageous thing. so maybe just worth it to go to local clinic before leaving town - isn't that how it goes w/ the kids' timing?!!

They could be eczema patches...my son gets red patches (they're also slightly dry and rough)on his face and other parts of his body when the weather gets cold. You could try Aquaphor.

My son has this very same thing on his face. Started this week. I finally figured out it was from him sucking his thumb. His hand curls up in that area when he is sucking it. That combined with the very dry air right now is just irritating the heck out of the skin there.

I have been putting a small amount of lotion on it a few times a day and it seems to help, but have not found anything that offers instant relief. It doesn't seem to bother him at all though.

Well, the look of the rash, weather it has bumps in it or not, weather the edges are irregular or not, weather it is hot to the touch or not, can all help with diagnosis.
Try going online and doing a search on a "childhood illness" rash site where there are pictures. Maybe that can help you figure it out. Take note of ANY other symptoms also, even if you think they are not related.

Happy Thanksgiving.

I bet it is from sleeping on her hands or absentmindedly scratching her face in her sleep. If it seems dry, try a little lotion or vseline (if it is REALLY dry). Safe travels for Thanksgiving!
