Questions Regarding Home Energy Efficiency (Insulation/radiant Barrier/windows)

We used Knott Insulation to put in our attic insulation and HIGHLY recommend them! They were HONEST and very nice to work with. We've noticed a huge difference in our bills both in summer and winter with the new insulation. If we had read more about it before, we probably would have done the radiant barrier also.
We've also found that using a window air conditioner helps. It's just like a boost to the central unit, but it helps to suck out the moisture. Then your central isn't having to run as much to keep the house cool and dry. We've actually done it for years, but then read recently how it helps with energy costs.
Recently we've been opening up the windows at night and keeping them open for a little while in the morning. Then we close up the house to keep the cooler air in. Our central isn't having to cut on until much later this way, if at all.
We've cut our electric bills (we're all electric, no natural gas at all) from 1/3-1/2, depending on month and conditions.

We used EAS for the Radiant Barrier and have not noticed a big difference. In our case we do not feel it was worth the money.

We had our roof replaced last year and they ordered the wrong decking -- they ordered the more expensive one with radiant barrier on it but since it was already delivered to our home -- they didn't charge us more for it. So ever since they installed that decking with the radiant barrier -- our home is way more efficient. My energy bills right now are $70-80 on a 1750 sf home.
Granted we have a fairly new A/C unit that was replaced 2 yrs ago. But I really think that radiant barrier also has made a big improvement this year.
Our home gets cooled down faster. When I want it really nice and cool, I only need to turn it down to 74. During the day I keep it at 78 - and we're fine, not burning up at all.

Check with your local electric provider to see what programs they offer. We just had the air ducts checked and repaired... FOR FREE. Some services are income based, most are not.
My parents are getting insulation, new doors, weatherstripping/window replacement, and a water heater for free....They are on disability and qualified for so much. The company that came out here is Enertia. If you like email me. I will look for their number.

As far as the windows are concerned, Lowe's will meet or beat anyone's price, so get two or three estimates, then call Lowe's and they will work with you. I had two friends who were super pleased with the job they did. I know this was not on your list, but I honest to God above saved $150.00 a month when I switched out all (and I mean ALL) of my light bulbs to those new ecobulbs (or any compact florescent bulb) The initial cost outlay was a lot more than regular bulbs, but, they last longer, don't get hot, and I am serious, the bill went down (it was in the summer, so I know it was not my imagination)you need to make sure you get closet bulbs, bathroom bulbs, there are a lot of places you don't think about putting light bulbs! Hopefully some other answers will get to your other questions, hope I helped a little bit!

We just had our new insulation put in a few weeks ago, and can already feel a difference in our house (our house is over 20 years old). We used MAC Roofing. They were clean, honest, efficient, and quick.
