Question About Taking a Seasonal Job

I accepted a customer service position that starts in a few weeks and could last through December. During the interview they asked me if there were any other positions I'd be interested in and I said proofreading. I was hoping for that job. How would I go about contacting the HR person and asking for the other position? Do you think it's a bad idea? I'm happy to have finally found some kind of job after looking for so long and being a sahm for 4 years. I'm also having conflicting emotions about leaving my children and changing our routine and other issues, but I really need the money. I don't know if this is the best thing right now...I did have 2 other interviews at the same time as this seasonal job, so there's still a chance I might get called for those other opportunities. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

What can I do next?

Don't start in immediately looking for other employment within the company, even though they asked you. They may be trying to find out if you are just using this entry position as a stepping stone. It's a seasonal job with a likely end date. Distinguish yourself in that job, showing you are loyal and hardworking and able to focus on the task at hand. If you immediately bail on this job, you make work for those who hired you. If they spend time training you, you can't just hop to another position unless it's in the same department. If you do well and they come to you, that's another story. It's fine to show you are interested in something at the end of the season job, but for now, use this as a chance to be sure you like the company, and to be sure you can adjust to leaving your kids. It's kind of a win-win. Meantime, if you get called for other jobs you had already applied for, go check them out. Do not tell them you accepted another job. If you do decide to opt for one of these positions BEFORE you start the seasonal job, give the seasonal people plenty of notice, but don't plan on trying to get in there later on - they will consider you someone who jumps ship whenever more money is dangled in front of you.

Don't fall into the trap of I can do better. Sometimes when we are giving up so much to go back to work we make excuses. Like I can pass on this one because of the two other interviews. Although it can look reasonable pretty much you are setting yourself up to fail and "have" to continue to stay home.

It is a strange thing our brains do when we really don't want to do something but know we need to.

Take the job you have and learn the organization. Then when a job opens up you can move over to that position. In other words a bird in the hand...

I think, if it were me, I would keep with the job I had accepted.
I would be afraid to jeopardize the job I DO have. Especially if you really
need it.
Things may change once you're in the position.
Hang in there & best of luck!

You introduce yourself to HR (you should have a meeting with them when you hire on for paperwork, etc.)and let them know that you are interested in permanent full time employment with the organization and ask to be considered if any positions come available.

Also, if you get called for another opportunity that is permanent full time with another company after your start this one, you can give two weeks notice to this job.

Good Luck!

It's a seasonal job. Your employer knows you will need a permanant job and will be going on interviews with other companies. Sometimes seasonal jobs become permanant. After you actually start (after training) send an email to HR inquiring about the proofreading job. Let them know you already work for the company in another department.

Now the warning: really watch yourself -- be on time, be polite, don't cause drama, ect.... you want this company to love you and want to keep you.

I am familiar with the company you have applied for. I worked at one of their other locations. They are a great company to work for, even being seasonal. They care about their employees, & do many things to keep everyone happy. My office had food or snacks at least a few times a week. They give you (free) some of the product they sell (you get to choose what you want). Then they have a huge party before the Holiday season ends, even if you have already been let go, you are still invited.
As far as the job, I don't know if things are the same as the office I worked in, but some of the customer service people also do some of the proofreading. However, the general rule is you are hired to do a certain job. They don't expect you to do anything more as long as you are doing your specific job. But you can always ask to do more.
They also understand if you decide to leave to take a full time or more permanent position. The company even hires back the same people each year if an individual reapplies.
Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

First, you stated you wanted the other job...Go for what you want!
Then you stated you're worried about finding quality child care... Check the child care resource and referral system where your job is going to be located, this way you're close enough to check on your children during breaks at work until you're comfortable and trust the care-givers. It's not an easy transition but it's do-able.
You stated you really need the money...I would like for you to contact me about an income producing opportunity that may solve your money matters. :-) ###-###-#### Call me.
