Hi Moms, I have a question concerning my son in college. It's his first year and his education part is being paid for from a scholarship. He is also at a community college. He was schuduled for and took 5 courses recieving dean's list honors. When he went on the computer to get his grades the one course was not showing up. When he asked what happened to his grade: he was told he was not registetered for the class and didn't pay for it nothing they can do. The instructor explained that my son was in his class and gave them his grade but they still say nothing you can do. He still has the text book and the notes What can be done to get him credit without having to repeat the course"?Anyone ever have this problem any help would be grateful Thank you in advance. H.

What can I do next?

Is he certain that he went through the registration process for that class? He should have a confirmation or receipt of the classes he registered for at the beginning of the semester. Does his scholarship stipulate only 3 or 4 classes per semester or something? It sounds like he needs to look into all of that and then make an appointment with the Academic Dean of the college to find out why it happened and how/if it can be changed.

I am very confused as to how this could happen. I worked at a college for many years. How did he know where the class was meeting if he wasn't registered? When he registered or thought he did, did they accidentally say he was auditing the class? On his paperwork it should have said that it was a 0 credit class? Did he not see that? When you audit a class you don't actually have to do any of the work...was the professor confused when your son kept writing the papers? If it was an audited class (colleges error) and your son did all the work and got grades for it all just like the rest of the class then you could petition the college to reconsider and then offer to pay for it assuming he gets credit for it. Its up to the teacher to want to make a case for your son then its up to the school.

Julie B is right, I might add that the professor may agree to allow him to take the class again pass/fail and just give him a pass...if his degree will allow that, it won't help his GPA but it won't hurt him either and he will have the credit.

Per Registering to his classes, he SHOULD have gotten a confirmation of it and a payment receipt.
DOES he have these?
On his Registration form, he WOULD have seen, what classes he IS signed up for. And his payment receipt, will have shown that that class was paid for, or not.

How the heck, did he even take the class if he was not signed up for it?
A Professor, has a class list.
His name should have been on it.
If he was in that class, and the Professor's class list did NOT have his name on it, the Professor would have told him.
Thus, that would mean checking with the Registrar.

It is either a mistake of the Registrar's office or your son's mistake.

So, the school, DOES have records of who registered and paid for a class.
DID your son, check with them?
It could be 'their' mistake.
Bottom line is: IF your son has his Registration papers AND payment/tuition receipt... then, that will prove, he did sign up and pay for that class. Then, in that case, it would be the School's mistake, or the fault of their computer registration system.

I would write to your county political representative. They are usually very eager to help people since they want to seek reelection. Since community colleges receive local funding, that may help.. (I sought my local representative when fighting a health insurance problem when I lived in Miami) They really do write letters! etc...

There should be a way to get him registered post-dated............Or- perhaps he can work something out with the same teacher where he registers for it this semester, but already did all the work... If the teacher is sympathetic, they may go for it.

Good luck!

He wan't formally in the class, he audited it. He will just have to re-enroll. He will have it easier this time due to already knowing the information.

Hi, H.:
Make an appointment with the professor and find out if he put your son on the audit route.

If he didn't, go to the Dean of the College.
Good luck.
