Hello,
I've been breastfeeding and my daughter is going to be 1 soon and I still haven't had a period... should I talk to my DR about this? I have the Paragaurd as well, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

What can I do next?

Every mom is different, and I wouldn't worry about it. I got my period after 3 months while I was still exclusively breastfeeding around the clock, so I was actually a little worried about that because I thought it was unusual. By the way - I am so glad I didn't count on breastfeeding for birth control. My OB warned against it, she said she delivers babies every year who were conceived that way. I love my daughter, and I do want more kids, but I was not ready to be pregnant again within three months!

I didn't have a period until well after I stopped breastfeeding at 15 months with both of my children. Don't worry. My doctor had no problems with it at all. Enjoy this time without it!

Hi, I don't know what Paraguard is but when I breastfed, my periods did not return for at least a year. Some women don't get a period at all while breastfeeding and it's okay. It all depends on how active a nurser you have, and it looks like she's still quite active. Don't worry about it, as it is normal but since I don't know what the paraguard it, you might discuss it with your doctor.

Hi E.! This is totally normal. I've been BF my daughter for 19 months now, and still no period either! =) Let's count our blessings! LOL It doesn't mean that you can't get preggo, but I guess you're taking other precautions for that. I've heard of women who don't even get their periods in between pregnancies b/c of BF. It's also normal not to get your period for several months after you stop BF if you've breastfed for such a long period of time. Good Luck!

Hi, E.. I don't know what the paraguard is, but breastfeeding does delay getting back into the fertility cycle. Are you wanting to have another baby now? If you're not, I wouldn't worry about missing periods. Sounds like a blessing to me, LOL!

Don't neglect your yearly exams, though, just because you're not menstruating. Yes, you should still go to the doctor whether or not you're worried, get your pap and physical, and let the doctor know that your period hasn't come back. To the best of my knowledge, not having a period while breastfeeding isn't a problem, but if you're worried about being able to get pregnant again, then definitely have a talk with the Dr.

Peace,
Syl

E.,

I was in a similar position with my kids. I breastfed for almost 2 years with both of them and for the first 9-12 months, I didn't get my period. It wasn't until they were eating a lot of real food and only breastfeeding occassionally that I started getting my period again. I didn't worry about though and I don't think you should. I looked at it as a blessing! =) I was happy to be period free! If you are worried though, you should talk to your Dr. and see what he/she thinks just to soothe your worries. Good luck with everything and enjoy this time without the period! =)

That's normal. My period didn't return until my daughter turned a year although I BF much longer than that. My son is 6 months and still no period. When yours returns, it may also take awhile for your cycles to get regular again.

My understanding is that you wont get your period until you stop breatsfeeding.

It is perfectly normal to not have periods while breast feeding. Consider it a perk! I didn't have on the whole 10 m I nursed my son and am not having one with nursing my daughter until I had mirena inserted and I occassionally will but they say they will stop for good or at least the 5 years that it is inserted. WAHOO!!! Anyways don't worry it is normal.

E.,
This is not unusual. I have 3 girls and breast feed each of them. While breast feeding I did not have a period, I only started getting my period again when they stopped. So I wouldn't worry. It was explained to me as natures birth control. Your body knows you are caring for a baby so it's trying to prevent another at the same time. Hope this helps.

I am not sure what a Paragaurd is, but I do have the breastfeeding experience. You won't get your period until you stop breastfeeding. I breastfed my daughter until she was 14 months old, and it took a couple months for all of the hormones to even out and start my period again. Then I got pregnant again! ;-)

Good luck, and don't worry. Breastfeeding your child is more important than a period in my opinion.

This is common. It doesn't hurt to ask your doctor about it but I didn't have a period either for the first 2 years after my first daughter was born, and I only nursed her for 18 months! Maybe it went a little longer with me bc my periods were never super regular the few years prior to conceiving her. I was not using any type of birth control during that first 2 years after her birth. I wouldn't worry, but again, asking your doctor about it would probably help put your mind at rest about it.

No, don't worry about it. I didn't get mine until she was about 15 months and really eating more solids. I have friends who didn't get theirs again until after that. It depends on how much she's nursing and how much it is taking from your body to produce milk. Once she starts getting more of her nutrition from real food and nursing less, you'll get it back. If you really feel that there is something wrong, call the nurse first so you don't have to pay for a doctor's visit.

That is not uncommon not to have a period for that long. I have a 16 month old that I nursed until he was a year. I would have gotten a period right around 11 1/2 mos, but I got pregnant, so I never got one.
Consider yourself lucky!!!

E., I breast fed each of my 3 kids and never once had period as long as I saw still nursing. I wouldn't worry about it as long as you're nursing, but if you are feeling that something is wrong, call your doctor to put your mind at ease. God bless you for making this commitment to your daughter!!

It's normal. I breastfeed my 16mo old daughter and also didn't have my period until she was about 12-13mos, by that time we weren't nursing as much, only morning and night(and still do)so when you're not producing as much milk your period comes back. Unless you want to get pregnant again then YEAH, if not(like myself) then UGH... who wants cramps and periods?! LOL!! rest assure, you are fine :)
