Hi,

I'm a SAHM of a 22 month old girl and am about 2 months pregnant with my second. I tried to breastfeed my first, but it was a disaster...I went to a Northwestern class and even had a lactation consultant come to our house....I want to be successful this time and so I'm starting now...Anyone know of any really good classes that are hands-on and deal with problems with breastfeeding/latching-on etc....

Also, did anyone have a really great lactation consultant?

Thanks,
M.

What can I do next?

I can tell you a class to avoid - don't waste your time or your money on the breastfeeding class that Rush University Medical Center offers.

The lady who ran the class spent WAY too much time going over how much money we'd save by breastfeeding and informing us of the pure evil that formula is. It would have been much more helpful if she'd actually spent more time on how to do things like, oh I don't know, how to get the baby to latch on and such.

Oh, and in her mad rantings and ravings, the class went over by 45 minutes.

I didn't catch where you were located but I took a class through the ENH Medical Group at Evanston Hospital. My lactation consultant is in Evanston. I can't remember her name but she is on staff at my son's pediatricians office ###-###-####. Sorry it was so hard the first time. I totally know what that feels like. I sometimes think I must have been crazy to continue but I am glad I did. It was more painful then the cesarean!!

I am sorry that you did not get the assistance you needed from the hospital or the lactation consultant.

I would be happy to talk with you.

Hello,
I personally had a great deal of help and support with Lactation Associates; they teach workshops and have drop in clinics every other Wednesday at Sweet Pea's Yoga Studio on Ravenswood. I had a lot of problems with nursing (thrush, mastitis, major cracks, overproduction....), and one of the nurses worked me through all of them and became like a second mother to me in the first three months of my daughter's life. They're super supportive and knowledgeable, and are able to write up claims that you can submit to your insurance (very helpful for us).
Hope that helps!
Jen

U can make an appointment to have a Le Leche member come meet you and show you a little bit with breastfeeding stuff. You also could call St. Francis Hospital and ask for Nancy the consultant for breastfeeding. SHe is supposed to be good - never used her. Also, my doctor was the one who saved us and let me tell you, IT DOES NOT GET WORSE than what we went through to breastfeed my daughter. Ironically, she is 2 years old and REFUSES to wean at all. Not to mention I am 4 months pregnant too. I think that's called success. LOL. If you want his number you could switch to him as a pediatrician and he'll help you with ANYTHING with breastfeeding. I mean it.
