Hi all! I just got out of the hospital last night after having been in for three days with diverticulitis...I am 31 and I was just wondering if anyone out there has this...it is not a young person's disease...although it is becoming more common among younger people. Also, if anyone knows of a good G.I. doctor and G.I. surgeon that would be great, because I will be seeking second, maybe third opinions. Basically the surgeon would like to remove the disesed portion of my colon , and the G.I. specialist thinks we should wait and see, and I am just trying to see if anyone else out there has this at a young age and what there experience was.

What can I do next?

Hi, I just wanted to give you the name of an expert in the G.I. field. His name is Dr. Moldoun. My husband who is 39 went to him, and then just to be sure went to another doctor, for a second opinion, and that doctor said that Dr. Moldoun is the expert in Intestinal health. My husband has seen him in Evanston I believe. He may have other offices... Let me know if you want more info. I'll get all his contact information for you if you would like. He is a thinking sort of doctor, not just a surgeon who wants to get everyone into surgery, although he may recommend it if necessary.

At 25 I got diagnosed with this and probably had for years before that. My doctor is dr. deymetrian through Condell. I am the youngest known patient most doctors have ever had. I had pains in my stomach for years and finally one day after having my daughter 5 months later, it hurt so bad to walk lift sit, whatever. So I had my boyfriend drive me to the hospital and got stuck there for days. Within 2 years with one episode at least every month, I finally went back because it hurt so bad to eat, and gas was so painfully. They ended up taking out the 3 feet or so of colon (large intestine). Now I can eat again. By all means get it checked out, 2 3 times if need be. I am going back again soon to see about other problems. Oh and by the way they say it is hertitary.

My husband is 40 and was diagnosed with diverticulitis several years ago. He has only had one round with it and his regular doctor just stated that as long as he avoids certain foods he should be ok. He used to eat a ton of nuts and foods with seeds which are big culprits. Once he started watching what he ate he was fine. He has not had any other attacks. I would definitely get a second and third opinion if neccesary. If they all agree surgery is needed then obviously it is, but if the new doctors do not agree then I would try alternative approaches such as diet management first. Good Luck and Happy New Year!

I too am 31 years old and have had multiple health issues. In 1999 (i believe) at the age of 25 i was diagnosed with non-specific acute colitis. About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with Irritabale Bowel Syndrome and had polyps removed from my colon. And that is only the start of it all... I also, like your first response, see a GI doctor at Northwestern downtown. His name is Christian Stevoff. His number is ###-###-####. I have been seeing him for the last 3 years and I feel comfortable with him (which is important as he is my only male doctor). I hope this helps!

It might be worth reading the book Restoring Your Digestive Health by Jordan Rubin - I agree - try to avoid surgery! (I was able to request this book from the library.)

Good luck!

HI A.,

Don't panic and get a second and third opinion...My husband was 39 when he had the proceedure you are speaking of, but ONLY because he had several div attacks in a short number of years and because he was severly ill for an extended number of days each episode. Since the proceedure (three years later), he is problem free and you would never know the condition ever existed - but it was not an easy surgery or an easy recovery and my husband is in very good health otherwise. I would be cautious of someone wanting to jump to surgery so quickly - especially if this is the first attack you've had. Unless you are in danger of serious complications right now, I would take your time and seek other opinions. We used a doc and surgeon through Lutheran in Park Ridge. We've just moved (records are in boxes in the garage) and I can't recall the guys name that did the surgery, but would be happy to get it for you if you'd like it.

Best of luck!

Hi A.....I have had a lot of GI problems and was in the hospital last year for a couple of days at Good Shephard in Barrington. Ther GI guy there told me I had all kinds of things wrong with me and my husband actually persuaded me to seek another opinion. My internist is at Northwestern and he told me to follow up with Dr. Mike Jones who is one of the head GI guys there. He is totally laid back and cool and re-tested everything. I ended up getting false information at Good Shephard an d am pretty happy with this guy. He's throlugh the Northwestern Faculty Foundation and I believe he is one of the head teachers there. Feel better!
