Hello everyone!

I was hoping someone could give me advice about my 7 mth old daughter. She will be going on her first airplane tomorrow. We're travling on a business trip with my husband to Florida. My question is, how can I protect her ears from cabin pressure? I went to Target & saw ear plugs called "EarPlanes" & they only have them for children from 1 yrs old & up. My baby is 7mths old, can I still try using these? If not, does anyone have other recommendations? Please send your responses as soon as you can. We leave tomorrow.
Your suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sucking on a pacifier, bottle or sippy cup seems to work well. It's like adults chewing gum. Have a fun time!

I heard you should never put earplugs in infant's ears. Just feed her or give her a bottle of water.

I recommend using a sippy cup, nurse, bottle feed, or use a pacifier during take off and landing.

Hi J.,
I took my daughter on her first airplane trip when she was also 7 months. I didn't use any kind of ear plugs for her - but I did encourage her to drink from a bottle during take-off and landing. I had heard that the sucking/swallowing motion helps to relieve pressure in the ears. She did fine, and never seemed to have any kind of ear pain during the whole trip. Hope this helps..have fun on your trip!

Hi J.,
I brought my son on a plane for the first time last January when he was 6 months old. I just had a bottle ready for him (I understand that the action of drinking (swallowing) helps relieve pressure in the ears). Honestly - I didn't even need it - my son literally had no problems with cabin pressure. Good Luck & Have a safe trip!

Hi J.,
My daughter is nearly 3 and we have been taking her on planes since she was 6 months old. The earplanes work great! Get the ones for 1 year and practice with them so your daughter gets used to it. They are made specifically for use in airplanes as they help lower the cabin pressure during take off and landing. Also have a bottle or pacifier ready this really does help in reducing cabin pressure as well. I also use the earplanes and think they help more than chewing gum or swallowing in general.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

My daughter wears those mold-able wax ones for swimming. They might work. We have to break hers in half (even though it says on the package NOT to do this, we make sure there is a LOT of wax filling up the outside of her ear so they don't "slip" inside her ear canal.)

They sell them at Walgreens and sporting goods stores, I know.

Pacifiers and drinking/nursing are good for relieving the pressure too. Make sure she stays VERY well hydrated as well.

Have fun!

Hi J. - We have been traveling with our son since he was an infant (now 2 years old). We never even considered ear plugs because I never heard or read of them. I followed the advise of other Moms and just made sure I had full bottles (or if you're nursing - be ready to nurse on board) for cabin pressure change, take off and landing. As long as our son was sucking during those times he had no issues at all. I wish you luck - it's not as hard as the anxiety that comes beforehand. My best advice is just to arrive plenty early at the airport and don't be rushed. Starting your day out right will keep your little one relaxed and happy for the journey! Have fun.

I used these with my son last month when he was 3 months old and he never had any issues with cabin pressure. I think they're great! I used the EarPlanes brand as well.

I also wanted to note because I saw Karen M thought that older people would wear them if they worked...and they do! My friend has severe sinus issues and flying really bothers her unless she uses EarPlanes for adults (that's how I heard about them in the first place). I think anyone who has issues with pressure should try them.

Silly Putty. I have used it for years - as recommended by my doctor ... and my son used it on his first plane ride at 4 months. You just ball it up and place it "in" the ear! Easy and cheap ..... and you can use it to keep water out while swimming as well.
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure if you need to have ear plugs...my advice is that you time your daughters feeding (bottle) during the time of take off...or if she takes a pacifier- make sure she has it in her mouth during takeoff. Cabin pressure changes should only "hurt" if she has an ear infection...otherwise she should be fine. Talk to your doctor if you're concerned - they have great advise. My son is now two and my in-laws live out of state so he's been on a plane over 10 times - and we've never had a problem with his ears...sitting still is a different story.

Hi J.! We always made sure that my kids were drinking out of a bottle/sippy cup but they still always ended up having the plugged ears.

Hopefully someone else on here has an idea!

J.-

We're going to Orlando today with our 4 year old and 2 year old...we traveled with them when they were your daughter's age as well to Florida...I just fed them bottles/breastfed, pacifers during take off and until we reached our altitude and they were just fine. I would try the feeding trick to keep her swallowing and not even worry about the earplugs.

Have fun!

I wouldn't worry about ear plugs. Just feed her during take off and landing and she'll be fine. If you child is prone to ear infections I'd get her checked before you take off to make sure she doesn't have an ear infection but other then that as long as she's sucking on something like a bottle of pacifier she'll be fine. I took my daughter to Florida when she was 8 months old and just fed her during take off and gave her a pacifier during landing and she was fine. Have fun!

Good morning J., I have been flying with my now 4.5 year old ever since she was three months. old I would say the best ting you can do is give her a bottle or a pacifier fro tack off and lift off, the sucking motion will help relive pressure. and remember it only a 2 hour flight and bring her favorite things, to keep her busy. I know you can do especially because you have your husband there to help I flew alone. Good Luck and have fun M.

Have bottle or breast at the flight alight and landing or pacifier will work equally well. I tried covering my daughters ear when she was 1 month thats when we travelled first time, she did okey. Same with subsequent flghts. Close to 5-6 months when she was able to move my hand away. She did so. We travel once every month and she has no issues she enjoys it without ear plug or sucking. she is 20 months and a seasoned traveller.

If you have to get the ear plug get the one for one year. would be okey.

My little one is 7 months also and I know from personal experience that ear plugs won't work. Your best option is to have her sip from a bottle or on a pacifier during the flight-ESPECIALLY during take-off and landing. The bottle would be the best, though, since she's have to swallow-this will keep her ears from popping. Good luck and have a safe trip! :)

Hi,

We've flown a couple of times with our son and never used the ear plugs. A couple minutes before boarding I would give him some infant tylenol and during take off and landing made sure he was taking a bottle/sippy cup. The crew was really good about it too, they woke us up prior to one landing just so we could get him his bottle. Good luck!!

Never heard of ear plugs, but if they worked, why wouldn't people be wearing them? I took my daughter at 6 months and was told to have her drinking. Swallowing is the key to landings and take off to "pop" the ears as the pressure goes up - just like most adults chew gum at this time - same reason. It's not the sucking, it's the swallowing that pops the ears so yes, bottle feeding or nursing during these times is the best. She will do fine. Nothing was wrong with my daughter when we landed. As long as she doesn't have a cold now or is sick, you all will be just fine. Enjoy your vacation!
