Ideas on Increasing Milk Supply for 10Mo Old

My youngest is almost 10 months. At his 9mo checkup the Dr suggested that he gain some weight, (he weighed 18.14) by giving him more milk. He only nurses 2x a day at most and even that is a struggle. He is super active and interested in everything around him so he would much rather look around and interact than take the time to nurse. Dr suggested pumping and giving him an afternoon sippy with pumped milk if possible as she would rather I use breast milk than start giving him formula. I have been trying to pump for about 2 weeks and even pumping several times per day I rarely get more than 4 or 5oz. He eats tons of table food, and would rather eat adult food than nurse. He doesn't look thin in any way and he is a super active baby and constantly following my 2.5yo around as much as he can. Any ideas on how to increase what I am able to pump? Thanks moms!!

What can I do next?

I've had good luck with Mothers Milk Tea (easy to find at most grocery stores) as well as 1/4 to 1/3 glass of beer (something about the oats/hops in it). I've also heard that eating oatmeal will help. If you're not using an electric breast pump I'd see if you can switch to one. They're pricey brand new but sometimes you can find them on craigs list or rent from the hospital. I love my Medella because I can pump both sides at once. Set it as high as you can stand and do each side for 20 minutes if at all possible.

take either mother's milk or just fenugreek (herbal supplements), it really helps, but in the beginning you need to take the full dose (your pee will smell like maple syrup. Mother's milk is a mix of fenugreek and other herbals, recommended by both my pediatrician and lactation consultant, really helped alot (I thought I was done around 10 months due to low milk supply and I kept going until 18 months when he quit, then I pumped his cups until 2)

I know that Mother's Milk Tea is supposed to increase your supply. I have never used it but I have heard good things! Try thinking about your child while pumping, pumps are much less efficent than a child. I also used to pump one side while my daughter was eating on the other side, that made pumping alittle easier.

I am not a pediatrician, but I don't think that 18 pounds at 9 months sounds small...both of my kids (who were 50% I believe) were just under 20 lbs at their one year checks...I don't think that 2 feedings a day sounds like a lot, but if he is satisfied with table food, and you can't produce more milk...I wouldn't really worry - of course, that is mom instinct, not doctor! Also, when do you intend to stop nursing? If you are going to switch to whole milk (or something else) at one year - I wouldn't mess with what you have going!

The more you pump the more you are going to produce.....and there are definitely things out there that you can take to increase your milk supply. Some of the other Mom's have already given you some good ideas, my daughter used Mothers Milk Tea and there are other herbs and vitamins that you can use, go to Mothering.com and see what they might have there about increasing your milk supply.
I have also ready that a nice glass of wine...or a small glass of beer will help with milk supply...seems to me like it would be a GREAT idea...no matter what...lol.
I would also have to say that if your little one has plenty of energy, isn't noticeably "thin" then I wouldnt worry about it too much. I must say that nursing only twice a day is unusual for a 10 month old...but if he is getting lots of other finger food...I wouldnt be to obsessed about this !!

I don't think your pediatrician is right here. Obviously he is much more into regular table food right now, so help him plump up that way. Try adding coconut milk, olive oil, or avocado to his food, lots of good fats. If you really want to pump more try fenugreek tea all day and look at your baby when you pump. it will get the hormones going & make you lactate more. But I think he just needs some regular fatty food. And 18 lbs is not too little for a 10 month old! My 3 year old is only 23 lbs! Those charts are based on formula fed babies & lots of pediatricians still use them. Good luck with everything!

A couple of things will help. Licorice root helps to increase milk supply. You can drink Mother's Milk Tea or eat a black licorice with real licorice root (Panda is a good brand) an hour or more before pumping. If you are trying to pump while your 2.5-yr-old is running around the house, your 10-month- old is trying to keep up, the TV is on, your surfing the internet, your stressed about the laundry, etc. Stop. Wait until after they are in bed. If you are relaxed; some classical or zen music, a warm bath or shower, and a calm environment, you will have much better luck. Save your milk in the fridge for use the next day. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I don't understan why your baby's doctor wants him to still gain more weight? If he is very active, eating foods, then he's just fine! Babies are different. If he doesn't want pumped milk and you can't pump enough, maybe you should start him on formula. I started my twins on formula when they were 2mos (they were born at 7mos). I couldn't get milk anymore, that's why. But they did very well! The formula I liked was Similac Advanced. Of course breastmilk is the bestest, but when you can't pump, you have no choice. I always said, mothers know their babies best! Use your motherly instincts. ;)

Is your ped using the breastfeeding weight chart or the standard chart? I bet on the BF Chart he is perfectly normal. As long as he is healthy, meeting his milestones and showing proper head growth, I wouldn't worry about size and weight.

In regards to milk supply. I love Earth Mama Angel Baby's Milkmaid Tea. It works right away, the next morning I am full! Try to encourage extra nursing, even if it's only for a minute or two. He will also be more interested in other things as he hits his milestones and learns new skills. Once he surpasses them, he may be interested in nursing more. Also, if you nurse him prior to meals when he is hungry, he will get more calories that way. Sounds like you are doing great!

One more option that works wonders is beer. Hefeweisen is the best for the hops. If you are concerned about the alcohol, can drink non-alcoholic beer as well for benefits.

A friend of mine told me that her doctor suggested that she take milk thistle supplement to increase her milk supply and that ended up working well for her.

I don't think you need to stress out over this. "Normal" is all over the spectrum. If your son is healthy, developmentally on target and has a good relationship to food, I think he's ok. I am a huge proponent of breastfeeding, but I'm also a huge proponent of watching for cues in children. The fact that he eats tons of table food shows that he's not starving... he's just getting his calories somewhere other than breastmilk. It seems to me like you don't have anything to worry about...
