Hi, I am a 21 year old college student with my first son on the way. I've always been fairly petite, 5'6, 125 pounds. Well, I have gained 3 pounds so far and I need to know how to gain more! I eat like a horse (now that the morning sickness has subsided), I take my prenatals every afternoon, I get plenty of rest, and I keep well hydrated. My ob keeps getting mad at me b/c she thinks I am dieting, which I am not!! I eat small meals (every 2 hours, otherwise I'll get sick). I eat healthy, aviod sodas, fast food, etc. I have a melon of a baby growing in my belly, so I look pregnant, but I am not gaining any weight. My son is developing fine, so I know my lack of weight isn't hindering his development. But, how do I gain? Thx!

What can I do next?

Hi A.,

LOL!!! I'm laughing because I'm seven months pregnant, eat very healthy, avoid all junk foods, and eat several small meals a day. I have already gained 30 pounds! Let's face it, you just have a wonderful metabolism!!! Your doctor should know that as long as your baby is growing and you are not anemic, you will be fine. Even if at the end you only gain 15 pounds. Don't worry. You have been blessed.

I didn't gain a lot of weight with my last 3 babies (pregnancy seems to be the only time my metabolism works), but I am big so I had plenty to spare. The baby is going to get what it needs first, but what could happen is you could lose say 20 pounds and then you would be too thin. Too thin can be dangerous just as too fat is. So I am guessing that is what your Ob is concerned about.

Did your OB offer you any suggestions? Maybe a protein drink or shake... and they have protein bars too.

Just some thoughts..good luck to you...you still have a few months left so you could gain over that time to so I wouldn't over do anything. Hormones flunctuate and we are all so different you can just never tell how it will work!

I don't know a lot about medican or the things that doctors do. My name is S. and I am 125 LB when I got pregnet and I was 188LB when I had my boy. I am also 5/6 in wait. I had to eat Frozen tv dinners and a lot of milk. I had doctors and friends telling me to drink that slim fast drink. I just couldn't understand how something is supposed to help someone lose wait and then they tell me to drink it to gain wait. That just didn't make sence to me so I didn't do it. I eventuley gained the wait it came on fast and just comming. Drink a lot of milk and water. By the time I got to the end of my pregancy I couldn't even drink water it gave me heart burn. When my son was born he had a butefull head of hair. the heart burn was from his hair. He still has great hear. Sorry about my spelling it's not the best. hope you can understand what I'm trying to say.. S.

Try eating more healthy fats like avacatos, nuts, & olive oil. And more fruit and fruit juices. Also eat more protein like cheeses and meats. congrats on the baby. I had my 1st daughter at 22. I loved being so young with her! I had lots of energy! I am 35 now and just had 2 more (20 months and 4 months) It is great, but I dont have the energy I had at 22!

So, you are turning purple AND not gaining weight? LOL.

Well I had experience with the purple thing, but I'll have to admit, gaining weight has never been a problem for me, pregnant or or not. ;-) I think if you have the "melon" tummy and the doc says that Connor is doing well, that the doctor should leave you alone! My best friend was pregnant the same time I was and she did not gain much weight either and her doctor did not give her any grief. I think each doctor just has a different philosophy on weight gain. Who is your doctor if I may ask, I see you are in Webster, I am in La Porte. Just wondering.

Keep eating girl......

Blessings!

As long as your baby is growing well, don't worry, Eat when you are hungry and eat well. IF your doctor is really concerned he will be doing multiple ultrasounds to make sure the baby is growing. It is not uncommon for young moms to diet when they are pregnant, afraid of getting fat. This isn't you of course but your doctor probaly has more experience with that than someone who just has great metabolism. So he is just reacting out of his norm. Just keep asking if the baby is growning and don't worry about your weight
