Getting and Sticking to a Schedule

I am trying to figure out the right schedule for my 9 month old son, especially in the afternoons and evenings after his mid-morning nap. Bedtime, bathtime and his long naptime are set, but I am not really sure when to do everything else - he always seems to need a catnap in the afternoons - but the time seems to change daily. Do any of you fellow mammas have schedules that work well for your little ones? I work part-time from home usually early mornings (while he is still asleep)and during his nap, and then try to spend as much time as I can with him while also finding time to cook, clean, shop, etc. He is so much happier in the mornings when we have a schedule, so I want to create that for him for the rest of the day and make sure he is getting lots of quality time with mom as well as time to explore his world and practice his new crawling/standing skills.

PS - are there any mom and baby groups in Central Phoenix?

What can I do next?

This is what worked for us. Keep in mind every kid is different.
630 Wake up and eat
700 clean up and then play independtly or with brother
830/900 first nap approx 30mins-2hours just depends (on what I dont know! LOL)
1100 lunch time and then clean up
1130 play time and stories/songs
1230 nap time (2 hours normally)
230 snack time
245 normally run errands like shopping or go to park or walk outside
600 dinner, bath and stories
700 bed time

It is really good for your child to learn to play without you as well. So, while he is learning to do that you can go clean or cook. My boys always play in the living room and from the kitchen I can see them so it works out pretty well. They always do find their way in the kitchen. If you also look on babycenter.com you cam find many different schedules around your babies age that meets your family needs.

Hi S.. When my son was that age he would wake up at 9:30 am and 2 hours later he was ready for his catnap, that usually lasted about 2 hrs. He would take another nap after another 2-3 hrs. For his eve schedule he would shower at 8 pm and he would have a bottle of milk when he was done and then he was down at 9pm. he had this schedule all the while I was a single Mom who worked FT. He is now 2 yrs old and for the most part he is still on his schedule except now he wakes at 9:30 am, naps between 12 n 2, then shower at 8 pm lays fown with us for his glass of milk til 9 pm and then off to his bed. Not really a huge change. I hope this helps you. Let us know how things work out for you.

Hi S.,
I don't think I'd be much help in the schedule area - we take it day by day, age/stage by stage and my daughter is very happy this way. She has a "routine" however and her patterns seem to be consistent each day. The nap lengths change though. I notice that she is always happiest first thing when she wakes up, but she really enjoys being out and about - I take her shopping with me and she likes the sling, the cart, or the stroller depending on where we go. I wanted to give you info on something to do Mommy n Me in Central Phx., though. We go to mommy n me yoga at 9th St. and Oak it's called Yoga Phoenix. Tell them L. and Amie sent you. There's a newborn to actively mobile class on Monday morning (10:30am I believe), and the one we go to is "crawling and up" on Tuesday mornings at 11 am. Let me know if you'd like any more info. We love the class. It's $55 for 5 classes, but your first class is $1 to try it out. At once a week, it's about $50/month. Well worth it - really good for baby - and in the nb to crawling class mommy gets some good stretching too while baby's less mobile. It's only one day a week, but I find it really helps the rest of the week.

Sounds like you are doing fine. My daughter's naptimes were flexible but always 1 morning & 1 afternoon nap. as she transitioned to 1 nap, I started shooting for a 1pm naptime with an 8pm bed time. We do ocassionally vary the routine but I have never gone more that 2 days without a quality nap.

try meetup.com for a moms group in your area. I found a great group in the west valley.

Hi S.,

I have twin 11 month olds and we have been on a schedule for awhile now. I read the book Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and I highly recommend it. It really helps you to recognize your child's signals and to get them on a good sleep schedule. Here's what I do and I find it works great.

My kids wake up between 7:00am and 7:30am and then go down for their morning nap around 9am. They usually sleep until 10:30am or 11:00am. We then play and eat lunch and they go down for their afternoon nap at 2:00pm and sleep until 4pm. Then we play, go out for a walk, have dinner, bathe, etc. and bedtime is 8:00pm.

Both are on the same schedule and if I remember correctly gave up that late catnap (around 5:30pm for 30 mins around 9 months) If your son is still taking that one I would try to wake him up right away so he goes to bed at a resonable bedtime.

I hope this works for you and I really do suggest that book. As for mom groups..go on meetup.com and type in mom play groups phoenix and I'm sure you'll find one, there are tons on there.
