G.,
Have you considered having just cake and ice cream? You could schedule the party in the middle of the afternoon rather than at meal time. I, too, thought a dinner was necessary when I planned my son's first birthday, but several people commented that they liked the fact that it was just cake and ice cream and presents! Just a thought!

I agree with the last requests. I've done spaghetti / garlic bread / salad before which is a big hit. However, I found it was a lot messier if you had little kids. I don't know about you, but toddlers and spaghetti on my carpet? Not my favorite! It is yummy and easy though. I've also done the taco bar before. That was the easiest one to keep hot until people were ready to eat. I had queso, guacamole, hot sauce, chips, tortillas / taco shells, taco meat, refried beans, and taco toppings. We just did this for my husband's family. It was a big hit and it cost me about $30 I believe (the meat was the most expensive part). I had the toppings prepared ahead of time, the queso and refried beans in small crock pots, taco meat in a large crock pot. Once everyone arrived, all I had to do was heat the taco shells and tortillas.

Spaghetti is almost always a hit with both kids and adults and is inexpensive to make.

We did pasta, salad and garlic bread for our daughters birthday. it was great and we were able to freeze the leftover pasta. We used the Buca di beppo recipies (I think there is a cookbook out there somewhere).

Good luck and make sure to enjoy the day! It's just as much for you as it is for them!

i second the pasta idea! pasta and sauce and cheese and breadsticks and salad and cake = done! maybe add some frozen meatballs for meat eaters.
