We moved over the summer and my children have a new school routine. They now have to catch the bus at 7 am. I am in desperate need of suggestions for a quick but healthy breakfast. They are not overly picky eaters but don't seem to want to eat in the mornings. Maybe it's just too early but they need to have something before going to school! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

WOW! Lots of great ideas. I am going shopping this weekend to get several of your suggestions and be ready for next week. One good thing is my son is eating all of his lunch...he's probably starving by the time they hit the cafeteria! Thanks so much.

Just a thought... My 4 year old loves the South Beach cereal bars. Really she likes the peanut butter ones. She has been eating them for the past year. They have lots of protein and low in calories. I think that they are yummy myself!!! Good Luck!

My son is 4 1/2 and he loves the Bagelfuls, they are quick and easy and he will eat them right out of fridge, or you can put them in the microwave for 35 seconds. Very convenient.

We use frozen waffles, I keep bananas around, one of my children had a single serve of macaroni and cheese, my 6yo daughter makes herself PBJ. They all know how to make scrambled eggs in the microwave. They also eat leftovers from the previous nights dinner, if there are any. I also have instant hot water to make oatmeal in the winter, I also keep healthy snack bars in case we are running late. I hope this helps

Orange Juice is the perfect breakfast bevarage since it gives the metabolism the leg up it needs for the day as well as all of the beneficial vitamins and minerals. This will helps them to be alert at school.

Bisquick makes these ahake n' pour things that you just add 2/3 cups water to, then put the lid back on and shake it up. You pour the batter right out of the container into the pan. This makes pancakes really, really easy. I take them camping all of the time since they're so easy.

Even easier is a breakfast of sausages (can heat up in microwave), fruit (bananas, apples or grapes), and a grain like a toasted english muffin. You can even substitute string cheese for the sausage to make it truly grab and go.

One of the things I make for breakfast that my family loves is our home version of the Egg McMuffin. It's pretty quick to make and they can carry it with them on the bus or in the car. Just cut an English Muffin in half (lengthwise of course) and toast both halves. While that's in the toaster, use a wide coffee cup to make the eggs. Spray with Pam, put in one egg, beat with fork, season to taste (I use garlic salt) and microwave for 30sec - 1:30 depending on your microwave. Then just dump it out on the buttered, toasted muffin and add a slice of cheese (I use the kraft singles because they melt so easy), top with other half of muffin, wrap in a paper towel and you're done. No dishes other than the butter knife and the coffee cup.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to tell you about another fast breakfast favorite. I used to make my kids peanut butter toast all of the time. The favorite way to eat it is two slices, sandwich style with banana slices in the middle. Very portable and very fast, it also happens to include a protein, grain and fruit. Viola!!

My daughter will eat a roastbeef sandwich when eggs don't appeal. My son likes a peanut butter sandwich or a pop tart. Grits were big a couple of years ago... pancakes - mix 'em up the night before and store in the fridge... French toast - easy and quick. Sausage patty sandwiches with eggs.

YMMV

Here's what I'd offer:
1hard boiled egg w/an apple
1toasted waffle w/nut butter
Cup of leftover soup/stew (our favorite), and best choice for a strong immune system.
Baked potato fries from Trader Joe's or Whole Foods (frozen) w/well cooked marinara sauce (TJ has a great one) and a piece of fruit.

Hope this helps,

My 5 year old just started kindergarten on Tuesday and is taking the bus, I was concerned about him getting up early (he has been sleeping til 8:30!).

I asked him what he wanted to eat and we went to the store together and got Cheerios -- I actually have been sitting down with him and having a bowl with him. He is very tired, but he eats. You may want to try sitting with them? You may have to get up 10 minutes early.

Also I have 2 other younger boys and I make a huge batch of chocolate chip pancakes on Sundays, and put them in separate freezer zip loc bags, and my husband (who works from home) heats them up for like 40 seconds each morning, very fast breakfast and homemade! You just have to set yourself up to make a whole bunch on the weekends. The pancakes taste fresh and have milk, egg in them so I figure it's protein.

If they absolutely won't eat food, what about a protein type drink -- you can buy them like Carnation breakfast drinks, mix it with milk -- or make them.

God Bless and best wishes this school year!!

If there's no time for a sit down breakfast and even if there is, fruit smoothies loaded with supplemental nutrition such as spirulina, bee pollen, powdered Vita C, ashitaba, wheat grass, flax oil, all good things compatible with their blood types...will boost immunity and brain function for focus in the classroom.

Have them eat at home or carry on the bus powerful protein packed trail mix, yogurts and energy bars. When there's time and for an extra special breakfast treat, the energy bars can be layered with nut butters, shredded coconut, sliced banana and sprinkled with granola (alternative to synthetic jimmies).

At www.greenrita.com, click on products for healthy travel ready solutions sweetened without processed sugars that dampen immune function. Try the Organic Food Bar with Tamari Roasted Almonds and/or Walnuts; the Chocolate or Natural GreensPLUS Bar is better for you and the kids than the likes of 3 Musketeers and Snickers and does NOT lose points on flavor. There's also the Breakfast Crusts by Mauk Family Farms that are great slathered with Tahini, banana and slices of the Organic Food Bar.

You've got to do the experiment to experience the taste sensation! I'm a sweets and dessert nut; but, have lost pounds to reach my ideal weight, eating lavishly but only blood type compatible foods. Of course, I also detoxed the heavy metals and the systemic candidiasis. Allergies, diabetes, arthritis, PMS and a host of other issues floated away.

Oh! Don't forget the blue green algae bars with almonds at www.simplexityhealth.com/greenworks as well as the Alpha and Omega. There are also smoothie protein powders from the blood type and the simplexityHEALTH line of products.

Gotta sign off....my to-do list beckons.

My mom used to chase me out of the house with pop tarts. I still have a hard time eating very early in the AM and take fruit or breakfast bars with me to work. You can offer dry cereal if they can eat on the bus - maybe make a trail mix from their favorites. Eggs are pretty quick, as are boxed cereals (and they can soon learn to serve themselves...my SIL kept cereal, plastic bowls and a small container of milk where her kids could get it easily when they were young). You can also offer bagels or frozen waffles or fruit. Or what about drinks like Carnation Instant Breakfast? Maybe that would go down better that early.

My kids are the same way but will eat turkey bacon they can just pick up and carry with them...or sometimes a yogurt. I don't like to eat early, so I drink protein fiber smoothies...they very often steal a drink to the point that I am left with only a third of it for me...frozen fruit in protein and fiber shake...blender.

Best breakfast is oatmeal porridge. Buy rolled oats in any grocery store, mill the nuts in a coffee grinder. Before you go to bed soak oats and milled nuts in boiling water. In the morning bring this mixture to boil, add cold milk, bring it to boil and that's it. It's ready. The trick is to pour perfect amount of water to soak it overnight. It should be enough to soak oats and make them soft, but not to much. When you boil it in the morning it should cover the bottom of the pan in order to avoid burning it, but if you have more water than you need take it out, because you'll be adding milk. After the oats are ready add a teaspoon of butter and honey to make it sweet. Don't use sugar. My daughter loves when I throw in raisins and dried cranberries. Oats are very gentle on the stomachs, give lots of energy kids need in school, nuts give proper fat and vitamins necessary for brain development, honey has antioxidants and vitamins that strengthen immune system, raisins are a great source of minerals and micro elements important for brain development and health. And it tastes good. For diversity you can replace oats with corn, buckwheat, and even rice. Just make sure it is more liquid than hard.

There are a lot of healthy and tasty cereal options-just check the nutrition labels. My kids also love bananas and granola bars when they need to take something with them in the car (like when we go on trips that start early).

My son doesn't like to eat much in the early morning either. He also catches the bus at 7am. I get him up about 6am (I'm up at 5:30am), have him eat a little something then brush his teeth and get dressed. Mini bagels and cream cheese, English muffins, toast, I like Pop tarts on rare occasions but they are too sugary for most of the time. If you're in a hurry a banana works but it digests quickly and I think will have them hungry again too long before lunch. When it gets cold, I can serve a sunny side up egg on toast ready in 15 min. Instant oatmeal, cream of wheat, or grits are fairly fast, too. A glass of milk or tea washes it down. I use to give my son juice, but it seemed to make his stomach a bit acid during the bus ride to school so we don't do juice in the morning anymore.
Additional Comments:
I'm not sure if it's the same where you are, but the bus rules here say "No eating food on the bus". It's a choking hazard on a bumpy ride. Crumbs and spills are hard to clean up. Also, kids who have allergies might come into contact with peanut butter or whatever and have a nasty reaction - and the middle of a bus run is not a good place for an emergency.

Granola bars, string cheese, peanut butter crackers, fruit, yogurt or even dry cereal w/ milk in a cup. Id avoid juice first thing in the a.m. as that would be too much sugar.
All of those items are easily portable, so that if they dont want to eat first thing, maybe they can eat on the way to school. Or even they can get completely ready then eat before they leave.
Im sorry they have to get on the bus so early, thats difficult. Id make sure they get to bed early as well and hopefully they will help them be a little more alert so early in the a.m. I lucked out this year as DD's school doesnt start until 9am! :)

Most of my kids are adults now. I still have a 16 year old son at home though. I remember giving them apples with peanut butter or "ants on a log" (celery stick filled with peanut butter with raisins dotted along the peanut butter). They were not early morning eaters either but I didn't want them to go out without anything. Sometimes they would eat yogurt with a handful of granola in it or even a half of a PBJ sandwich. Whatever I could get in them that was healthy was fine by me. Good luck and I hope these ideas help.

I have trouble getting my son (almost 4) to eat breakfast, too. When we're in a hurry, sometimes I give him a Nutrigrain snack bar and let him eat it in the car or take it with him to preschool.

I aim for protein, fruit and a carb. The Jimmy Dean breakfast D-lite sandwiches are quick, good and easy. If you buy them at a store in bulk they aren't that expensive either, especially if you compare them to the amount people spend at a drive through for breakfast. You can even make your own version of them ahead of time if you would rather do it that way and just store them in the freezer to heat in the microwave. Another option is breakfast burritos. My Mom used to make these ahead of time and there are so many options-eggs or just egg whites, cheese which there are different kinds to choose from, potatoes or hash browns, sausage or bacon, onion or green pepper or a combo of all of them :) Serve with salsa if they want and they are another item you can premake and freeze and just microwave in the morning. Pair one of these items with a piece of fruit or a glass of juice and you should be good to go.

I have done the ziploc omlets. You can make them the night before and cook them the next morning. Very easy. I have also made bagel sandwiches. I take eggs in a bowl and mix them then microwave and when done slide onto the bagel. My 13 yr old loves them. Toaster Strudel also has a variety of strudels. There is always the frozen pancakes, french toast, waffles, or even fruit. I always tell my kids even if they are not hungry drink OJ and or grab a piece of fruit. I am a big surfer on the web so that maybe a great source for some interesting ways to spruce of a breakfast or quick meals. Have Fun!!!
