All I Want Is a GOOD Humidifier

Germ Guardian! I got it at Costco on-line. No GROSS filters. Silent. The only way you know it is on is the light. Love it and will NEVER go back to a humidifer that uses filters that put mold in the air. I also bought the UV air purifiers, which solved my daughters allergy issues. Buying at Costco is risk free. I was reading your responses because I would love a good humidifier, too, with no moldy filters (and costly replacements!). Since several moms recommended the animal (Crane) humidifiers, I did a little bit of shopping online. I read some other reviews and another mom said that you have to empty out and refill the container daily (or clean every other day) or it will get moldy inside. But they all said it was VERY quiet. Just wanted to let you know! (I'm thinking I'd rather change filters every so often than empty/clean the water tank all the time). If you do go with one that requires filters, I have found that keeping the filter saturated helps it to last longer. I will immerse it in a sink full of water and let it soak every other day or so while I am filling up the tank. I like the idea of the crock pot, but I don't think that would be safe to leave in the room with my curious 3 year old :)

It will humidify a very large room. If you want one that JUST does one small bedroom, try the Sunbeam 1119. We have been through SO MANY humidifiers! You want to get an evaporative model. DO NOT get a warm mist model. They are terrible. They aren't very efficient. Your electric bill will go through the roof with those. Good luck!

hi! i love the cool mist humidafire i have for my daughter. i got it at target and it looks like a cow (they have other animals). i loved the cow one because it comes out in 2 streams. i took care of my nephews for a few months and it was nice that it went into both of their cribs at once with it being in between them. i dont care for the ones that come with filters its just more money you have to dish out. my humidafire was about 40 i think but it was well worth it. it will shut off automatically if there isnt enough water to run it and its not noisey at all. i really hope this helps you :) good luck!

You have a lot of good advice already but I'm gonna add to it and tell you how good our "frog" is. My daughter loves it, it was inexpensive (in comparison) and it literally BILLOWS the humidity into the air. I am very surprised at how nice it is.

We've got a Cow..that really kind of looks like a pig and a Penguin. BOth from Target. This is actually Cow/Pig #2 for us. The first one lasted about a year. But then I forgot to empty out all the water after the last use for a couple of weeks and so it got clogged with a bunch of water sediment and didn't work again. Plus my then 2 YO dropped it.

Our Penguin is going on year #2. I think I've just got to rinse it with some vingear and water to clear out the sediment again and it will work perfectly. Right now the dial setting on it doesn't work great. So I think a good cleaning will do it just fine.

So far these are the only humidifiers that last longer than a year. All of the Vicks ones only lasted us one cold season a piece.

Here is an inexpensive solution: a large croc-pot full of water and maybe during cold season some mentholatum or tiger balm mixed in with the water might be nice. Try placing it on a few towels, the "cooking" temperature on "low", and keeping the lid slightly open. The drawback is that it may not be too decorative for a room!

I have Vicks Cool Mist Humidifier. It is not loud, but it does require a filter change. I would use mine just about every night, and change the filter after 6-8 weeks of using it. And to be honest, I probably didn't have to change it. It worked great in my daughters room, and I still use it. Sorry I don't know the model. If you need it, let me know. I'll check it for you.

It sounds like this is a common problem! We have returned so many too. Hands down the Germgardian Ultrasonic is the best humidifer. It is quiet and there is no filter. It has both warm and cool mist (you should always use cool for litle ones so they do not get burned) It is well worth the price. The only maintenance is that you have to clean out the base because of mineral deposits from the water (it will be less if you use filtered or nursery water) I highly recommend this one! Don't bother with anything else. Seriously.

I have the same problem! As far as I know, you can't get around the moldy filter issue unless you add a chemical to the water (which is then evaporated into the room for you and your children to breathe in...).
My aunt is using an electric tea kettle on the lowest setting. Obviously, you can't really use that in a kids' room all night long, but I'm thinking about just boiling a bunch of water before I go to bed. Not sure it'll be effective, but I'd rather try that than to blow chemicals or mold spores into the air.

I also bought the one from Target, only ours is a penguin. We love it! It's a cool mist humidifier where you can set it to many different mist levels. I've left it on high and when my son wakes up the room feels damp. It works great!

Have you tried an essential oil diffuser?

My family gave up on humidifiers and opted for essential oil diffusers when the kids were congested and couldn't sleep. They worked great and were much healthier for everyone involved. We eventually found a "menthol" pad humidifier that simply pushes air over a pad dipped in menthol and that does the same thing, plus you can reuse the pads or create your own with different healthy scents.

Fair warning: good diffusers are expensive and fragile. The "menthol pad" humidifier we found at WalMart for under $20. It's several years old now and still works like a champ.
