7-Month-old Cries Out During the Night

My daughter has been sleeping through the night since she was 5-months-old. For about 3 weeks now she's been crying out in the middle of the night, several times during the night. She is asleep when she does this and my husband and I find ourselves getting up about 4 or 5 times throughout the night. It's not an ear infection and like I said, she is asleep. It starts off as sort of a loud whine or cry and we wait to see if she'll go back to sleep before we go into her room. She gets louder and louder (sounds as if she's headed for a full-blown crying jag) that's when I or my husband goes in. Her eyes are closed, we pat her bottom, give her her pacifier and she settles into a deeper sleep. That's good for about an hour then it starts up again. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it teething, night terrors? Something else?

My best,
B.

So What Happened?

Thank you all! I spoke to my pediatrician as well and he seems to think it's either teething or dreams. Since she isn't awake he suggested to leave her be and let her quiet down on her own. So I'm sure we're going to have some fun nights ahead of us!

my son does that when he is teething, it's usually so hard to get him to stop wailing, i almost have to wake him up, make him happy then i give him some motrin (if i def. know he's teething) then try to soothe him back to sleep... i know it's hard because they can't tell you exactly what's wrong! hope this helps,M.

Hello B.,
My son used to cry it out at night for no apparent reason. We also find ourselves getting up a few times at night. Since your baby is 7 months old, it is highly likely that she is teething. I gave him some Tylenol and slept through the night (Orajel did not work for him).

Make sure you chk with her ped first just to make sure that it is not something other than teething.

Good luck.

B.- from what i understand, night terrors start later--around 18 months. my sone used to do this and he was a very restless sleeper. i never found anything that worked, but he has grown out of it-he just turned 3. you could try Gentle Natural Homeopathic Teething drops found in Target in the baby section--has Winnie the Pooh on the box. is it chammomile and helped with colic a lot. good luck.

i'm guessing its teething though i wouldn't rule out night terrors either.

sometimes i would give my daughter a cold bagel and she would gnaw at it..then fall back asleep.. else if you're certain its teething you can try baby motrin or baby tylenol
but of course check with your doctor first

Sounds to me like gas but possibly teething. I remember my daughter going through this and I had to sort out which foods were causing her to become gassy. I never heard the gas until the morning BM by the way, it was trapped in her intestines and by her sad, shrieky cry I am guessing it hurt like hell. But her eyes stayed closed too, it was like it hurt but it was inconvenient for her 'cause she was tryin' to sleep!! LOL. For her the foods at fault turned out to be wheat cereal and apricots, I think. If it is teething.. Hyland's makes a great meltaway pill specifically for teething. Super stuff!

it could be anything...my son didnt sleep fully through the night until he was 2...just keep going in and reassuring her that she's ok...its par for the course of being a parent...loss of sleep!

Hi B.,
It does sound like teething, but my son did that when he was a baby and he STILL gives "shout outs" a couple times a month and he's 3 1/2 years old. He's a very active dreamer. Thankfully, he outgrew the frequency of several times a night. It was really frightening at first, but now that he talks, it's much easier to tell when he's dreaming. Whether it's dreaming or teething it will get less frequent as she gets older. This too shall pass. Good luck.

Not sure what that is but my 20 month old daughter does the same thing. We just wait a few minutes after she starts and she then goes back to sleep. We have noticed though that when we do get up she doesn't seem to get comfortable. She moves around her crib until she finds a spot. That seems to be when she does the crying out the most. Maybe your daughter just can't get comfortable. Sometimes she does get up and we give her her bottle. But 9 out of 10 times she just goes back to sleep. This does not happen every night. In the beginning it was but now it is getting better. Could be that she is cold or hot too. We were told by friends with kids that it could be teething or just growth spurts. Hope this helps and just be patient, it does get better. Good Luck!

We are experiencing the EXACT same thing with our 8 month old. It's been going on for the past 3 weeks. I have been saying that it is from his teething, but not 100% sure. I'm hoping it will disappear as quickly as it started. We would like to let him cry it out and see if it will dissipate, but we are afraid he will wake up our other 2.
