I know its July, but I thought I'd ask before I forget to ask. My son is turning 2 the day after Thanksgiving. I'd like to have a birthday party but need some suggestions for when to actually have the party. We, along with most everyone else, will be out of town with family that long weekend. So, I was wondering what would be better- to have a party a week or two before the birthday or a week or two after? I was thinking before so it doesn't get too inter-mingled with the holiday season and is a separate special day for my son.
Any thoughts or experience with this?

My sons birthday is a couple days before thanksgiving, so I completly understand. We usually have his birthday a week or two prior, that way family can still come and not feel to overwhelmed with the holidays looming. We have always opted to go before due to x-mas and new years and all. Its never been a problem with friends or family, in fact they appreciate it!

When my son turned 5, it was in the middle of the week, so we made invitations that everyone seemed to understand. Ex: "Johnny is turning 2 on Friday November 22, but we would like you to help us celebrate on Saturday the 30th!!" This self-explanatory invite lets people know that it's going to be earlier/later than the actual (unfortunate timing) day, but we'll celebrate anyway on another day.

My daughter's birthday is the day after Christmas so I understand how crazy it can be. We have had a party a few days after her birthday and all was fine. We don't want to have her party before because everyone, including us, are trying to get all sorts of stuff done before Christmas and a birthday party will just add to the madness. Last year we went to Chuck E Cheese's on her birthday. It wasn't to busy and although not everyone invited coud attend we had a decent turn out. She had more fun playing and it allowed me to relax A LOT. We did it very simple with just bringing a cake. This year since we are hosting Christmas dinner, etc. we will probably do something similar just so I can relax about it and be able to enjoy the day with her.
My son's birthday always falls on/near Labor day weekend (Sept. 2nd) so most of his friends are out of town too, we do it the weekend before.
I would plan to have it when it's most convenient for you. I don't think people will mind as much as you think to do it closer to his birthday.
My family is full of birthdays around the holidays. There are birthdays on Nov 2, 8, and 30th, Dec 3, 9, and 15th, and Jan 3, and 16th. We celebrate them either the weekend before or after depending on schedules or the day they actually fall on.
Just remember, you can't change the date your child was born, holidays or not, celebrate them as close to the date as possible!

We talk with the people who be coming to the party and find out when is best for them. As far as your son is concerned he will have fun no matter what day you have it. At 2 he doesn't know one day from the next.

I would have his birthday a week or two before the holiday. That way its still special and people are not to stressed for the holiday madness of the season.
