2 Year Old Birthday Party Games!
Hi, Ladies,
My son's birthday party is on Saturday. I'd like to have a few activities, but the guests are mostly adults, with really only 2 other small kids...some middle schoolers will be there too. So, I can't do straight up kiddie games, but I do want to do some fun things. Any ideas for me? I do put together a DVD of pictures for my kids' parties, but other than eating, opening presents, and "cake" (he is allergic to everything!!!), what else can I do that would involve both adults and kids? I would greatly appreciate your input...His party theme is Thomas/trains. Thanks!
So What Happened?™
Hi, Ladies,
Thanks for all your responses! I appreciated the encouragement to keep things simple, and did just that! We had it at a friend's house, where there was a bigger swingset/play area and had plenty of balloons for the kids to play with. My son had a great time and was exhausted! Thanks for your help!

I went to one similar. We did a potatoe sack race with 1 adult/child, it was fun nobody made it far though, we used pillow cases. Another was while the kids did musical chairs, adults did it next to them. They had a gift for the adults too...it was fun...they had pinata and painting..that was enough and made a good time for all!

At my two year old's party, the guest list sounded much like yours. :-)
I pulled out sidewalk chalk and homemade finger paints for the kids, (that a few of the adults decided to enjoy, too...)
A number of the adults took to tossing a frisbee around, while several others were happy to sit around and visit... Made for a very relaxed environment where we all got to enjoy being outdoors together...
Enjoy your party! :-)

At my 2 year old daughter's birthday party we had 2 planned activities and that was plenty. We did the hokey pokey, which the 2 year olds loved, and the adults joined in; and I made a pinata. The kids each took a turn trying to hit the pinata, but I ended up having to break it...we did not have any older kids on site. I filled it with healthy treats (boxes of raisins and other fruit snacks).
Two activities was plenty...the little ones enjoyed unstructured play, and the adults enjoyed visiting.

have middle school guests blow bubble for the lil ones.
hitting balloons around the room is fun too.
keep it simple while you still can
your lil one will have a great time with the simple things, including the packaging from the presents
turn a large box into a train for him to sit in, just add a lil imagination to the box.
Offer the adults a nice cheese tray and a glass of wine or beer and chips depending on the crowd and all should have a good time

Hi J., I am a mom of 5 terrific kids, and 2 awesome grand daughters. I am a pro clown, and face painting is always a hit for all ages! I know you said your son has allergy problems, I use snazaroo paints, they pride themselves on being the safest for allergies. I get mine at clown antics clownantics.com. The store is actually a home of husband & wife clown team.If you let them know as soon as possible, that you need them quickly, they may let you pick them up tomorrow. It's not hard to come up with simple drawings, or let the middle schoolers do it, they love it! Hope things go well. P.S you can paint the hand, arms ect if you are worried about the face :) If you want to do more toddler games..let the mid school kids take charge of the games, this will make them feel useful, mature, and they will have fun without playing them

Why cant you do kiddie games? That seems most appropriate for 2 year olds, remember its his day you want him to have fun. The middle schoolers I know are "to cool" to play games so they would most likely just watch. Maybe just put something in their gift bag like a blockbuster gift card or something, or craigscruiser gift cars for $5. My daughter will be 2 in June and we will be doing a duck in the pool game-kinda of like the one at the carnival just fill up a small pool and get a few rubber duckies with numbers on the bottom for example I'll put 1,2,3,4 and each number will have a different prize, and the coolest prize will be whoever picks the #2(her age number)
Also the classic pin the nose on the clown games(its actually a sticker. and then a simple bean bag toss game like Bozo's old bucket game, whoever gets the highest number of buckets wins a prize ( I'll only put 2 or 3 buckets in a line).Maybe you could do a pinata and have the older kids help pull the rope, the older kids in my family thought that was the funniest thing. Good Luck and enjoy!!

I would suggest that instead of games you set up a craft area. You can pick up several things from Michaels at a reasonable cost (hats, bags, t-shirts) and then decorate them with feathers, stickers, glitterglue. This should keep your older kids entertained and some adults can help the younger ones.
Have fun!

Some kind of relay races that would involve both adults and kids would be fun. Blowing bubbles, sidewalk chalk pictures, face-painting, a pinata with things your son have, decorating frames in which you put a photo you take on the spot, a fish pond with prizes (can be in any large container), making bracelets/necklaces out of beads to take home - these are some of the things I've thought of.
