My second baby will be born first week in Aug. My first was a Dec. baby and we swaddled her up in our drafty uninsulated beach house. However, now our drafty uninsulated beach house will be a warm, non air conditioned beach house. Swaddling was a God send to sooth our first. What should i do with summer baby in a heat wave? Or even just low 80's. All the swaddlers I see and have are fleece and flannel. Any insight or experience on how to deal with swaddling summer babies?
I'm not sure about California - but in Georgia it gets so hot and humid that its a little miserable. I just had my second baby 2 weeks ago and we have only swaddled him in a light, cotton hospital blanket, at night, wearing only diaper. Our AC is on 76 ....and he seems to do okay. I would be super careful, but I'm sure you will notice if he/she feels too warm.

Not every baby likes swaddling... so you may luck out and have one that h.a.t.e.s. it.
OTW... a light cotton blanket will work fine. The ones the hospital had in July when kiddo was born were ALMOST like thin cotton dish cloths
Remember... they're used to being in 100 degree weather (or technically 98.6 degree weather) so being born in the summer isn't THAT different from the womb.
Your baby will release a lot of heat through his head, but you are right to be worried about him getting too hot. Newborns can't easily regulate their body temperature.
Maybe some gauzy, cotton fabric? My mom made me large receiving blankets out of seersucker and they were a godsend here in Houston.
Also, a cool mist humidifer (clean it everyday) and a fan will provide some cooling effect in drier climates...like the swamp coolers widely used in the west.
My son was born last year in May. He was an infant during the very hottest time of year here. We used Aden & Anais swaddlers. They are made of muslin and very breezy and light. They may seem a little expensive, but are soo worth it. I can't recommend that brand enough!!
We went to Babies R Us which had cotton swaddlers, and swaddled our daughter wearing only her diaper and the cotton swaddler.
Hi, We had to swaddled my daughter in the hot summer. I hated it because I didn't want to cover her up so I went to the fabric store and found a super light weight mesh knit fabric and just cut it into large squares. Most knit fabric like tshirt fabric doesn't need to be hemmed or sewed to keep from fraying so it is almost no work involved. Good luck! and Congrats!
Babies R Us sells nice cotton swaddles that are much lighter weight than the fleece ones. We used those with my son who was born at the end of May. I would skip the swadlling this time around babies sleep very well unswaddled no blanket @ 65 degrees or cooler.I fear baby will be unable to regulate his or her temp. causing baby to overheat sweat lose body fluid during sleep leading into dehydration or possible SIDS.My home is set @ 73 I have an upstairs bedroom it is much warmer upstairs with fan on my baby sleeps just fine with no blankie just a onsie she often sweats without the fan rotating on her.
Our first son was born the end of June and we swaddled him until he was about 3 months. We didn't have AC either. I really liked the hospital blankets, they are cotton and thin, in my opinion they are perfect for swaddling! We stole about 10 of them...sssshhhhhhhhh, don't tell LOL!!
if you swaddle dont go heavey with the pj's. my LO was born in July of last year and we kept her in a long sleeve onesie (she liked her arms out) and we used the zip pouch with the swaddle wrap she loved that. it was less bulky. we found them at BRU. when we didn't wrap she just hung out in the pouch. gl and congrats
I found some cotton jersey swaddlers at Babies R Us several years ago. Look for those and just put an undershirt and a diaper on underneath. The general rule for babies is one more light layer than you would feel comfortable wearing.
- Your 2nd baby might not need to be swaddled for comfort
- If it's hot and no A.C, any type of clothing might not be comfortable
- I would wait until your baby is born to even worry about this being an issue. He/she will set the tone as to what to do...they run the house, remember :-))
You should check out www.solanababywear.com. All of their swaddle blankets are really thin cotton - they are super breathable. I used them to swaddle my summer babies (I'm from AZ). They're also really big, so you can use them from a newborn baby up to a big baby (depending on how long you'll swaddle for). My youngest daughter now uses hers as a summer blankie - she loves the satin trim.
I’m so stealing hospital swaddles this time around (if they are light weight). Though I looked high and low I never found any like them. Also the Jersey ones to cut and not hem yourself are a fabulous idea. I’ll check out some of the other ideas on line as well. I’m so all about having my ducks in row so waiting to see if I have a swaddle preferring baby or not is not in my nature. Unfortunately I waisted $$ buying “summer” swaddlers at Babies R Us to realize that was the name brand and they were still made of fleece!
