My daughter was diagnose with juvenile diabetes at the age of 4years old she is 6yrs old now. Iam having alot of issuses with schools with a nurse or a teacher with knowledge of Diabetes. I REFUSE to put my daughter back in a school that can not help her manage her diabetes.I live in the Detroit area. I did not want to put her in a school far away from me or my job but I dont have alot of options because schools and daycares are scared to take care of her any suggestions schools
Can you afford private school? If you aren't against private, maybe that would be worth a try. I went to the Dearborn Christion School when I was a kid, many of the teachers are still there. It is very small so each child gets personal attention. Also, they do not switch classrooms or teachers every hour. That is all I could think of. The school is on Donaldson in Dearborn, between Rotunda and Monroe off of outer drive. Whatever school you do sent her to, I think you should offer an inservice to the staff in the school, your doctor may have handouts and other things that would assist you. Good luck
Toni - I'm sorry I can't help with a school name, but wanted to respond. You should try using the local JDRF office and website to get in contact with some other parents of children with Type I - they will be your BEST resource. I put some information below - hope it helps. - JULIE (Type I too!)

If you look on this page, there is a list of families that have volunteered to be resources to others:

JDRF is a great resource www.jdrf.org
Our 21 year old was diagnosed at 7 and we struggled with the at school time as well. If you can get your health care provider to help educate the staff it certainly helps. Of course there has to be staff with a cooperative attitude first. I do not have a suggestion for a good school for you. It is hard to educate them on everything they must know. It will never be perfect and you have to realize that they will make mistakes. Hopefully you are in a position that you are able to take a phone call if they need advice on what to do. There are so many kids with different health challenges, the school has to accomodate them. Another of my daughter's has cancer and will start first grade soon, I too am worried about sending her to school. And we have wonderful support at her school. It is very anxiety producing when you can not be there.
Sorry I couldn't help you with a specific school that is good. I am in Belleville and I am sure you do not want to come this far.
Hey,
Im pretty sure Dearborn Public Schools have nurses who can help out. I think what you have to do is let the principal know that your child is diabetic and he would know what to do. If they dont provide then they would give you info. on other schools that most likely can help.
Good luck, I don't think that school districts are "budgeting" for nurses anymore, they cost too much. Now its usually just bandaids and icepacks in the office with a call home if your child needs more assistance.
