I'm looking to buy one of those mattress covers designed for those allegy-prone, but there are so many out there - any suggestions? I saw on Dr. Greene, there was a recommendation for Allergy Control products?

I really like the plastic mattress covers that zip up. They provide the most protection, are easy to wipe down and are affordable. Don't forget you will need breathable covers for your pillows as well, these should be removed and laundered in hot soapy water once a month. There are some suggestions that soaking bed linens weekly for at least an hour in hot water helps to "drown" dust mites, which can survive a wash cycle. Check your water temp to make sure it's hot and not warm.

Yes, there is a strong recommendation for products to control allergies. I have allergies also and started using "safe and environmentally friendly" products wholesale. My suggestion would be to contact an allergist to see if they have brochures and can recommend a brand. We went to Bed Bath and Beyond. Some are very pricey. Also, the ones we bought seem too big for the beds and have too much play and wrinkles. We duct tape them tight under the mattresses. Measure carefully.
Some are more plastic than others and therefore noisier. Lastly, making sure it seals well with a zipper is important.
We also bought air purifiers (do your homework on this) and found it very helpful.

I have a lot of indoor allergies mainly due to dust and dust mites, which would be the reason you would get an allergen cover for your mattress. I was recommended by an allergist I was seeing in California a particular company but since then I had seen some brands sold at Bed Bath and Beyond as well as Target and Walmart that probably do the same job. I say if you are willing to spend more money then go with one that is recommended by your allergist.
But covering your mattress is just a small portion to deter allergies there are lots of other things you need to do.
1.) use dye and perfume free detergents and softners
2.) invest in getting an air purifier in your home. There are many products sold today that are very good.
3.) replace your air filters on a monthly basis.
4.) make sure to open your windows atleast once a week (during winter time) to let fresh air in as indoor air can be more polluted than outdoors. (you may want to have your heating/cooling vents cleaned professionally, approx $100 - $150. It's recommended to do it atleast every 2 years)
5.) Purchase swifter dusting products OR a micro dusting cloth to dust your furniture and appliances. Dusting with heavy sprays and feathers just throws the dust around the house making allergies worse.
6.) Find out what you or your children are allergic to specifically. Sometimes it can be pet dander or something else. Sometimes you need medicine like Zyrtek that helps curb indoor and outdoor allergies. I like this product so much better than Claritin or Allegra. Also, you may want to consider modifying certain foods you eat, particularly grains like corn, that make allergies worse.
7.) Make sure you invest in a very good vacuum that is NOT bagless and has a hepa filter. Make sure to vacuum and dust regularly and circulate the air in your home regularly.

I have had severe allergies to all animals, pollen, trees, grass, mold, dust, and it's been a struggle. I tried allergy shots for 4 years.
My 5 year old son recently started showing signs of allergies, and I didn't want him to suffer for as long as I did, so I looked into lots of different treatments.
There is a treatment called NAET and it was worked wonders for both my sons and me - even after all these years. After being horribly allergic to cats, I can now sit right next to one with no problems whatsoever.
