Hi Ladies
This is my first time posting here. I'm hoping that I'll get some important questions answered. Today I had my ultrasound appointment and found out I'm having a girl. We're very excited to have a little girl in the house. We have two boys already.
I also found out that my placenta is attached to the covering of the cervix or uterus due to scar tissue I believe. I still am confused about a lot of things and have many questions. My next app. is next week and I'm anxious to see my obyn.
I was also told that if it stays attached that the placenta will not come out on its own and that I will need to have a hysterectomy done.
This will be my 3rd c-sections. I have had two emergency c-sections.
Have any of you ladies have had to deal with this? What was the outcome?
Thank you for any help and advice.
Anita
Placentas that are covering the cervix are called placenta previa. If your placenta is still covering your cervix when it is time for tha baby to be born.. you will have to have a cesearan.. but you might need a ceseran anyway with 2 prior c sections.. some hospitals and drs will not to a vaginal birht after previous c sections.
placentas usually get pulled upward as the uterus expands and the baby grows... so there is a good chance that the palcenta will move out ofthe way in time for the baby to be born.
I have never heard of the placenta being attached to the utereus.. I am not sure taht they can see that on ultrasound..It is supposed to be attached.. and then it is supposed to seperate from the uterus after the baby is born.
If it is covering your cervix at the time of delivery, the placenta is basically blocking the exit, so you will need to have a C/S. It isn't necessarily as a result of scar tissue, it is called placenta previa and can happen to women even in their first pregnancy.
Hopefully your doctor can give you more info, but I'd be surprised if you'd need a hysterectomy for just that reason, maybe there is something else going on. I think it is more likely you'd have a D&C which basically means they have to go in and remove the placenta, vs it being delivered. You probably had this as just a part of the previous C/S.
Personally, I would do a little research on placenta previa and be prepared with questions to ask your dr at the appt. Particularly the need for a hysterectomy.
At my sisters 20 week ultrasound it was discovered that she had placenta previa. For her, it basically meant no sex or exercising and that she would need a c-section. Eventually, the placenta moved upward, off the cervix. This happens a lot, as the uterus grows up, it pulls the placenta upwards with it. She still had the c-section, since she this was her second time anyway. I have never heard of needing a hysterectomy for placenta previa. I would get a second opinion from a perinatologist for that.
