Painting my daughter furniture - what kind of paint to use?

Hi moms!

Im about to paint my daughters bedroom furniture. Most of it was already white, I just need to do some touch ups. I bought two unfinished shelves at Hobby Lobby and used the paint that my husband bought and I dont really like the paint. Doesnt seem thick enough (and Ive done a couple of coats). He went to Home depot and they recommended it, but It doesnt say anything on the label about wood furniture. Also, its only a semi gloss...Shouldnt I use a high gloss or should I just put a clear coat on when Im done?

Im usually pretty good at regular paint (for walls, etc) but furniture painting is new to me so any advice would be great! Thanks and Happy Holidays!

with unfinished wood you really need a primer - you will get a better result. for already painted furniture - if you are just doing touch ups - the paint might not match. I would sand the area to touch up - paint that, let it dry - then put a whole new coat on the piece. A polyurethene topcoat is a good idea - but will give a sheen.
