Need Help

I am a working mom whom is extremely unhappy at my job. I am looking to change employment and wondered if anyone had any ideas. I am very employable. I have a bachelors degree and a paralegal certificate. My job is greatly affecting my home life. I come home stressed out and upset most days of the week. I feel like my husband and my 4year old daughter suffer because of my job. If anyone can help that would be great. They always say it is not what you know, but who you know that gets the job.

Maybe you need a break from working with people. I'm a veterinary technician and I love that my interaction is primarily with animals. Like most jobs though, there are good days and not so great ones. It's about finding balance. Don't feel bad for wanting a change. The average person makes a complete career change something like 7 times in their life.

Maybe you could try an online career quiz like the kind you do in high school to see what types of career fields relate to your interests.

Have you considered working at home? With a BA, for example, you could seek employment over the internet with a company like ETS ( http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.3a88fea28f42ada7c6ce5a10c3921509/?vgnextoid=85b65784623f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD ), which always needs more people to score educational tests. Here is the link to current scoring opportunities:

Would it be possible to take a break from working for a little while. I think seperating yourself from work would help you to figure out what you want to do next. Your family is priority of course.

Hi Allyson.
May I suggest getting some ideas at local job fairs? Not only do you get a chance to find out what else is out there, and what jobs are in high demand; but you'll also meet prospective empoyers, and get your, "foot in the door."

Good luck!

Hi Allyson! I read your message and just had to respond to you. I can SO empathize with you! When I turned 30 a year and a half ago, I felt like I was going to have a nervous break-down! I had so many goals I had set for myself "by the time I turned 30." I have a BA in Communications, and had given up my career in Public Relations and Corporate Communications to stay home with my son (now 4 years old.) But, I had to give up my job because I was so stressed out all the time, and found myself taking it out on my family. It's not a fun feeling to hurt those you love the most.

Anyway, I just felt like I had a lot in common with you because before my career in PR, I also worked in a law office. :)
But, I am so happy and love my life now! I work two businesses part time from home, and get to stay home full time with my two boys. I love it. I think the key to finding your happiness, is finding something that you truly enjoy doing and feel passionate about. I work as a Wine Consultant for WineShop At Home, and a skin care rep for Arbonne International. If you have any questions about either of those businesses, please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] or 505-948-3703. Or you can visit my websites at: www.wineshopathome.com/mandyolsen or www.mandyolsen.myarbonne.com.

Really, I just want to let you know that you're not the only one out there who feels like you do. I've certainly been there before. Just know that sometimes it takes a big change in your life (like quitting your job and doing something you love) to find true happiness. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Mandy Olsen

Get out immediately-it's not worth it. I am speaking from experience. I am a single mom/realtor and about 8 months ago I quit my job as a realtor's assistant for a top realtor in town. I had worked for him for 1.5 years and had learned a lot, however, we was the most abusive boss I have ever had. I was always upset and I definitely brought the tension/stress home. I felt like I was so impatient with my son. So one day I had had it and so I quit on the spot and without anything else lined up. Some thought that it was irresponsible...but it was the best decision I could have made. I went out on my own in real estate-and although I have had difficult times..its all been worth it. I am in such a better place. Things always work out-you have to trust that.

With regard to work....Marcia Owen (temp/staffing agency). You could start there. Nothing wrong with temping. It can help you get your foot in the door. You can always look for jobs while you are temping. It is a solution temporarily so that you can chage your current situation. You deserve more than this. Life is too short to be miserable.

Good Luck!

You should contact Sonja Cotton. She is a legal recruiter who got me the job that I am actually starting today. She was great. Her telephone number is 602-230-7500. The website is www.sonjacottonlaw.com. If you do go and meet with her, let her know that Brenda Maple referred you. Good luck!

Allyson, it sounds like you would like to be a stay at home mom. I have home base business that really works, I was also looking for better and stress free jobs, but I could not find one that paid enough. I started my home base business and I work it about 5 to 9 hours a week and I make money and am stress free from working for other people. If you would like to hear more about what I do, Please feel free to check out my websites www.workathomeunited.com/robertarich or www.melaleuca.com/robertarich
Please give me call at 520-744-3238 or 520-245-1162

Take a look at the following web site (www.ytb.com/celtbeast) there is an informational tutorial that should tell you the basics about my home base travel business, if it is something you might be interested in you can email me at [email protected] and from there I can give you phone numbers or what ever else if you are interested. Good luck, and as a single mom I use to have to give myself and I told my two girls 30 min to unwind after I got home to get in mom mode. The girls would work on homework or play out in the fenced yard while I started dinner and usually it worked very well.

Hi Allyson,

I can relate to you with your situation from my previous employer. Have you ever considered working from home to work for your self? I am an Independent Contractor with Home Interiors and Gifts and make a pretty good income with helping others decorate their homes. As a consultant there are lots of opportunities to win prize such as merchandise, vacations, cruises, money etc... as you move up with Home Interiors you can also receive a car that is your for life. If you are interested the best way to reach me is to call me 602-430-1439, my name is Wendy Kish. You can also check out my website for more information at www.homeinteriors.com/wendykish.

I had worked in the legal field for the last 16 years and since having my child directed my efforts more towards billing. I use timeslips and quickbooks to perform AR/AP functions for 3 different companies...ALL FROM HOME. Perhaps you could get started doing something like this.

I performed the billing function at my legal job (in Flagstaff), and when I left (we moved out of state) I continued to perform the same function. Then by chance I have engaged 2 more business (completely different types of offices) to perform their billing functions. The time demand it not much (I would estimate no more than 40 hours/month - TOPS), but most of the work comes during the last week/first week of each month - of course. Of course the income is not equal to working full time either, though.

Seems to be quite the need for billing assistance in small offices. You could advertise locally or through the Court House (if you want to continue to work with lawyers), etc.

Good luck, whatever you may choose.

Hi Allyson,

I'm a stay at home mom with a precious 4 month old daughter. I work online with a company whose goal is to bring total financial independence in 8-10 years. They have an incredible turnkey marketing system, so all you do is drive traffic to the site. There is a start up cost, as with any real business, but the results here are incredible. The first page doesn't give you much info, but enter your name and email and it will take you to one that's much more helpful. I wish all of the mom's hear could discover these products! You get to become financially independent while helping other's do the same.

I have been able to help a lot of moms work from home. Their lives have changed in a huge way because they are in control of their schedule again. You can make a good living and enjoy the tax benefits when you have your own home based business. I am Executive Regional Vice President and Independent Consultant of Arbonne International. Call me to schedule an appointment during the day or evening, Tuesday and Thursdays are best but I can also work it in over the weekend.

I look forward to helping you make a positive change your in your life! Cindy Wojtowicz

Allyson R,
JUST START PUTTING YOURSELF OUT THERE!! Take a day off and go to a job agency, take care of yourself. You can't be healthy (physically and emotionally) for your family if you don't take care of yourself. If you are currently working in a law firm I know how difficult that can be (the environment) and it doesn't have to be. I had a really secure job with a City Government office, good benefits, holidays, flex-schedule, the works, but I was very unhappy, bad environment also. I started looking and asking questions about work places and finally left the city government job. I HAVE BEEN SO HAPPY!!! Not everyday is perfect but the perfect days vs. the bad days are good=99 bad=1, no kidding. If your employer doesn't take care of your needs (within reason of course) then it isn't worth taking care of of your bosses needs, you'll end up coming out with nothing in the end. It's not worth destroying your family environment when your managers probably go home worry free. Good Luck.

Hi Allyson R. - I couldn't help but respond to your blog... I was in the same situation as you this past year. I made some changes in my life and tomorrow is my last day in my corporate job. I started a home based business with Cookie Lee Fine Fashion Jewelry and now I'll be doing it full-time. I started 2 years ago and thought I would only do it on the side as a hobby but then my job took a dump and I was completely unhappy so I made some strides to build it so I could do it fulltime. I to have a bachelors degree in Finance/Accounting and always thought I would be in the Corporate world, NEVER in my life did I think I was going to do something like this. I am 39 and will be 40 in July, so I was thinking maybe I was going through a "mid-life crisis". Now before you dismiss this opportunity give it some serious thought. I know some women who were determined enough and was able to make the transition in just a couple of months. I don't think of it as a "Sales" job. The jewerly is just a vehicle for much more that this company has to offer. I have never met a better and empowering group of women and it has basically cured my depression that I've had for years and has completely changed my outlook on life. My husband is excited for my new adventure (especially after I just took him on my first trip that I won through the company to Jamaica.) And after 18 years we are falling in love with eachother again!

I would love to talk to you more about it.... NO OBLIGATIONS WHAT SO EVER. Just girl talk....

Call me if you'd like to learn more.
