My 5 year old daughter was just diagnosed (6/16) with Type 1 Diabetes. This has been a real shock, since she's always been healthy and had a terrific 5 year check up in mid-May. We got a lot of information on how-to deal with things in the hospital but my brain is overloaded right now trying to cope from one meal/shot to the next.
I'd appreciate any advice or help finding a support/play group in the Garner/Raleigh/Cary area.
First, make sure it is Type 1 and not Type 2 as they often misdiagnose children and assume Type 1. Is she overweight at all? If she is skinny, I would bet it is indeed Type 1 but if she is overweight you cannot rule out Type 2. Make sure they do a thorough diagnosis as Type 2 is happening in younger and younger children. I just watched a video by Sergei Boutenko last night, what a coincidence, and he was diagnosed as Type 1 at 9 years old. He changed his diet and reversed his diabetes (his mom's idea on changing his diet), but now they think he was Type 2. Get this done quickly as once you start the shots it is very hard to get off them.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 at 47 years of age and they kept assuming it was Type 2, even though I was very slim and it does not run in my family, so I had the reverse problem. But I finally got it diagnosed correctly.
I am very sorry for you child's diagnosis. I don't have a child with diabetes and I didn't have it as a child, so I am probably not much help but I just wanted to mention that. Maybe others can provide advice in that area.
