Good can opener

This may seem silly but I need a GOOD can opener. I don't want an electric one and have tried a few manual ones but none of them seem to work or work well for long. I'm willing to spend a little more if I can get one that really opens cans. The latest one just seemed to rip the paper and would open for a inch or so and then stop and have to be restarted. I don't have time to deal with a bad opener when I'm trying to get dinner cooking!

Thanks in advance! Any info good or bad is appreciated!

Oh me too! I hope someone has a good suggestion.

Trudeau. Go to their website and order one. Best thing I ever did for my poor arthritic hands!

:)

**Wait, I just went to their site and they don'T HAVE the one I bought. I got it at Crate and Barrel, try that then!

The handheld one from Pampered Chef is awesome.

This is NOT silly. In the past year I have gone through 4 can openers. An electric (good brand) - broken, two regular ones (broken). I am currently using an OXO - it is a bit pricey (IMO) and rather bulky. However - it has been really sturdy, it locks onto the can, is really easy to turn and has been very reliable. Good luck.

Mine is old, at least 12 yrs. It is heavy duty, rubber handle and on the side of the metal part it says Swing-A-Way

No idea where to find it since mine is so old.

Oxo or Swing-a-way.

Pampered Chef! It works a little differently - it actually cuts off the lid from the side rather than the top, so the top of the can doesn't fall into the can, and the cut edge is not sharp. It's hard to explain, but once you use it, you'll never ever go back to another kind of can opener.

I agree this is not a silly quesiton. I have had good luck with my KitchenAid brand. My MIL gave me the Pampered Chef one (see Catherine C's description below) but it didn't work very well for me. Intense prolonged Barbie moments perhaps. Good luck.

I bought my Pampered Chef one when I was first married (almost 10 yrs. ago).
I really like it. Still works great.
I would have to imagine that the OXO and KitchenAid ones are good too...I have had good experiences w/ both brands.
HTH!

I would say buy a Pampered Chef one. I had one for over 10 years. One day it broke, and my husband bought me a Cuisinart electric one. It broke in a few weeks. Then I went to Walmart and bought a hand held cheapy one, then a hand held Kitchenaid one. All crap. I keep telling myself when someone has a party I'm gonna buy another one from Pampered Chef.

I've had my OXO brand manual opener since 2003 (wedding gift) and I love it! It has a nice thick and rounded turning handle so your hand and fingers don't hurt or cramp up. I've never had a problem with it in nearly 10 years. A little soak in vinegar and hot water removes any rust that can occur with frequent uses and washing. Hope this helps!

have to say my oxo good grips has been good to me. had it many many years & still works great. a little rusty in spots but that doesnt matter much to me.

Swing-A-Way. Is the best one I have ever had. Have tried many over the years when I could not find one. They sell them at Williams Sonoma.

I agree with OXO Good Grips can opener. We've had this one for years and I love it.

They have a great one at Bed, Bath & Beyond. That is where I got mine but the grocery stores always have great and simple to use heavyweight can openers that you use via hand.

Hi! My name is Jeannell L. Ashley and I have an awesome recommendation for a can opener!! I think EVERY mom in the world should have this!! It's from Pampered Chef and it's called Smooth-Edge Can Opener. It's only $20 but it will be worth the money!! I have one and ABSOLUTELY love it!! Not only will you be able to use it, but your kids can use it and WILL NOT cut themselves!! Hope this helps!!

I'll add my vote to the Oxo Good Grips can opener. We've had ours for years and it's still going strong.

Bed, Bath and Beyond carries them, which means you can use a 20% discount coupon on it.

swing -a-way is the best ever. I have even bought them for my mom and my mother in law!

Thanks everyone! I went with a OXO one at Target. Not the cheapest one and not the most expensive one - it was $18 and has a button that locks it one. I’ve used it a few times already and it’s smooth and easy! Only time will tell for sure, but for now I’m happy with my purchase!
