Dry, chapped lips on toddler

Thanks in advance to all you Moms! You are always right on with your answers and advice, so I hope you can (once again!) help a first-time Mommy out!

My 13 month old toddler has dry, chapped lips. He is not dehydrated, as he drinks plenty of milk and water (and always has wet diapers). I've tried vaseline and some of my own chapsticks, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Any products/advice to help his poor little lips heal?

Thanks!

My son always licks his lips so his top one especially gets chapped occasionally. I won't put just anything on his skin and i'm really picky about products that I can get at the local stores. I use natural products that are safer for my family and the environment. I'll be happy to share the info about this store, just email me at [email protected] and I will go into detail. the lip balm that i use on my son clears up his chapped lips in just hours and it's safe for him. can't beat that. :)

I know I recommend this a lot, but I really love it! Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream works wonders. I use it for me and the kids for chapped lips, rashes (the kids, not me :) ) sore nose from colds, etc. GL! I hope he feels better soon.

Eucerin "aquafore" (I can't remember the spelling). You can find it either in the baby aisle or in the adults section. It's the vasaline type stuff. It also comes in tiny tubes which are perfect for what you need. It's the ONLY thing that worked for me when I was having the same issue. I tried everything under the sun (all kinds of natural stuff first). My dermatologist suggested it. I've used it on my baby's face sometimes too.

PS If I you can't find it and want to, let me know and I'll check the spelling etc...

Mary Kay Night Emollient Cream. A small tube of it comes in their satin hands kit and I'm sure they sell it another way too. My husband and I use it on all kind of extra dry skin... chapped lips, face, my poor pregnant belly... you name it. It works like a charm and keeps my husbands lips from splitting in the winters. A little goes a long way. Good luck!

I suggest you try Acuaphor Healing ointment. it has the consistency of Vaseline but it stays on longer and penetrates more quickly. When my son was younger he would often get chapped, dry lips during the winter months because of the dry air etc. Our pediatrian recommended Acuaphor ointment and we've used it since( he is 8 yrs old now). You apply as often as needed until the lips get better and then once or twice a day after that. My son uses it once a day before school and he no longer has the problem with his lips being chapped. The doc also suggested Lansinoh..the stuff for breastfeeding moms. that stuff is amazing too. Hope this helps! Best of luck!

Use Aquaphor. It will do the trick. My pediatrician recommended it for my toddler way back when.

Putting some veggie oil on the lips and rubbing with sugar has been a big help to me. It even tastes good afterwards!
Does he lick his lips alot?

Lypsyl works great! I think you can find it at Kmart or Walmart. Just make sure it's the stick and not the cream in the tube. Did wonders for my family :)

Try aquaphor. It has vaseline and extra stuff in it. It's good on dry skin patches on skin, too.

I really like the Lanosil stuff for breast feeding moms(that you put on your cracked nipples). It is like a miracle cream for dry lips!! My daughter recently had a high fever and horribly cracked lips and this worked in a matter of hours.

I would use coconut oil. It is fantastic! It is so good for you. Please, don't use vaseline products on your son's skin! Vaseline is a petroleum based product. Made from crude oil. It is so toxic. You definitely don't want to have that absorbed into his skin or swallowed! Look on your lotions too. It is in most lotions. Read your labels and say no thanks to petroleum. It only makes things worse. Coconut is natural, healthy in so many ways, and works for so many skin ailments. Google it to learn more. You may be so surprised at what you find. HTH

I use my leftover Lansinoh nipple cream on dry skin. A bit sticky but works great, and you don't have to worry about him swallowing it!

I swear by using Lansinoh nipple cream for everyone in my family too. We never have chapped lips and it's safe if you eat. It also stays on for a long time too!

My 14-month-old son has the same problem. I use Boudreaux's Baby Kisses on his lips. It helps and he doesn't mind it.

Give your little one omega 3 fatty acids--you can get them in child form at any natural health food store, and King Soopers even carries coromega brand that I give my little ones. The dryness saps the natural fatty acids from kids skin, and treating from the inside out will cure the problem. Treating them with a mineral based salve will clog the pores and is not healthy. However, using coconut oil (which has the natural fatty acids that the skin uses to repair itself in it), or even olive oil will help treat the problem in the near term.
Good luck!

In this climate, it's not at all unusual for little ones - especially teethers, to get very chapped, dry lips and faces.

You need to very very careful of with what exactly is in the lip balm or moisturizers you're putting on your baby. Because of their size and their skin to weight ratio toxins and chemicals have a much greater effect of babies and little children. And yes, your skin and body care products are frighteningly polluted.

Carcinogens, hormone disrupters and even heavy metals have been found in baby care products of large "trusted" companies. Contrary to belief, the FDA does virtually no overseeing of the cosmetics and skin care industry and their are no federal laws regarding safe ingredients.

Aquifor for instance, is full of petrochemicals (carcinogens).

You can learn more about this, and even search the ingredients (and safety) of all of your body care products at -

All of this, and a battle with my own son's eczema as a baby, prompted me to create a line of all natural - food grade ingredients - body care products. The beauty is, they work better than chemically laden, mainstream, products.

Our lip balm and Skin Healer would both be perfect for your baby's dry chapped lips. Our products reach deep into the tissues, soothing, healing and moisturizing. The ingredients have antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Because we use only whole plant and food ingredients, they are very effective, and extremely gentle.

With babies and little children, whatever you put on their faces will end up in their mouths. Our products are just as good for them on the inside as it is for her skin. I'm pretty sure that's not true of Burts Bees, and certainly not anything made by Johnson & Johnson.

The trick with chapped lips is that the balms do very little until you get rid of the dead skin on top. Now, you don't want to go picking it off. The sugar & oil scrub someone mentioned earlier is a good way. There are also exfoliating products for lips - Mary Kay makes a great one. Contact me for more info (and I can find out if it is safe for ver little ones). After you've gently taken off that dead skin, a smooth balm (not one in a stick, but the gooey kind you rub in) will help soothe and keep the moisture in.

HI Paula,

I'm also a big fan of Satin Lips by Mary Kay. You can find a consultant at www.marykay.com and just put in your zip code.

aquaphor is the best product I have found. It really works for any dry skin area you need it to.
