Does Prozac cause an "itchy" side effect?

I just started Prozac yesterday, awful PMS, I couldn't help but feel "itchy" all night...is that a common side effect? Does it go away? Any other concerns/side effeects I ight experience?

Hi Sally,
Yes, the itching can be a result of an adverse effect. I would notify your physician and let him know you are experiencing itching and especially if you develop a rash. In the meantime, try benadryl to relieve your symptoms, but don't forget to call your doctor even if the itching stops with the benadryl. It may be just a matter of making some adjustments. not that i'm aware-call your pharmacist and ask them if thats a side effect- you may be allergic look for raised rash- then if its there call doc for something else to try

i use prozac and it has helped me a lot good luck

Hi Sally,

First a few concerns with Prozac is that it is intended for individuals that have Major Clinical Depression, not situational depression or Post Partum. Just want to get that out of the way. A common side effect of Prozac is the feeling of depression (even though that is what it is treating), feelings of inadequacy, hopeless, helpless, and suicidal thoughts. Prozac is a great treatment once you get over the initial period of taking it.

Like anything your body will react (side effects) to this foreign chemical in the body. It will try to reject it and then ultimately accept it and the side effects should go away unless they are severe, in which case they will become mild but still present. In an ideal world you will have a dosage that is low and causes few side effects. But the reality is, being on any medication that effects our brain chemistry is going to have some side effects. I would suggest going to www.google.com and entering Prozac and reading the literature out there.

You will read about people committing suicide while taking it. But like I said the initial period (first 6 months) of taking any medication is going to be a change for the body to adjust and absorb.

I think prozace does cause itching. I was talking zoloft and asked the doctor to change to prozac. When taking zoloft, I did not experience itching, but prozac has started my back, legs, neck, etc. to itch.
