Diaper Rash-EXTREMELY BAD!!! Please Help

My 11 MO little girl has very sensitive skin. Two weeks ago she got a stomach bug and had dirrhea really bad. We have been treating a bad cash of diaper rash. I mean she is just scratching her bottom every time she can. It is rough like sand paper, red, irritated, sores and bleeding. We have used Triple Paste, Butt Paste, Desitin, Balmex, Neosporrin, and Vaseline. Nothing is working and it is not getting any worse, but it is not getting any better. I am at my witts end with it and feel so bad because she is so uncomfortable and in so much pain. We never have had this problem this bad with our 2 YO so I don't know what else to do. If I called the Pedi is there anything prescription that they can give? Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kim,

It is possible that your daughter may have developed a secondary infection, likely a yeast infection or possibly a bacterial infection. Since the current symptoms have not improved within 2 weeks, I would recommend that you contact your pediatrician for an evaluation for the appropriate treatment. Diaper rash due to yeast infection is quite common, and depending upon the severity, may be treated with a topical over the counter agent, such as Clortrimazole (Lotrimin-AF).

Hope this helps.

God Bless,

Moya

Hi Kim
I use johnson's purecornstarch babypowder and burt's bee's diaper rash cream on my kids I used both each time I did a diaper change there really great you can get them at target or walgreens good luck and hope she get's better .

It could be a yeast infection. Use monistat cream. If it is a yeast infrction if can move to her blood. Thats what happened to my son.

I agree seeing the Dr. If it is bleeding then she needs something stronger. Next time she starts getting a rash though the BEST stuff that we found was A&D Ointment. It kicks butt (no pun intendend lol). You can also use it on cuts and stuff so you might be able to give it a try now, but the other moms are right that it is probably infected or a yeast infection now. My sis has ses. skin too so she used to always get diaper rash. To help her the doc told my mom to set aside about 30min or so a day where she could run "free" lol. It helped dry her out from the day. Good luck.

Hi Kim,

It is probably a yeast infection. My son had the same thing a few months ago. I would call your doctor and there are creams that they can prescribe that will clear it up in a few days. Good luck!

Hi Kim,
I know you've rec'd alot of responses regarding diaper rash. Normally I would say Triple Paste. That stuff is a real cure. However since that didn't work. Use just plain old cornstarch from the baking section at the grocery store. My grandmother did it and always swore by it. It's a little messy than the pastes, but it will dry it out and cool it off. Also just let it air out.

Good Luck.

Sandie

Ok, here's what you do ... Take a cotton ball and put on it MYLANTA yes the stuff for your belly and then coat that in your zinc cream (desitin A&D dr smiths etc) it takes about 24 hrs with an application for each diaper change for us ... with as bad as yours seems maybe two days IT WORKS I PROMISE!!!

My son has had that before. They can get a yeast rash on the bottom, and they do have prescriptions that work great for that! I would call the pedi and just ask. You could put just regular vagisil on it as well. His pedi had me do that as well. And it helped.

If it is a diaper rash, try Corn Starch. They few times mine got rashes that were bad, I just went to the kitchen and got it out the pantry. And, for some reason it works so much better than Johnson's pure cornstarch powder?!? Also if that doesn't work, try Caldasine powder in a pink container from a pharmacy. That worked for my girls too, however it is hard to find. Another suggestion - make sure that you are letting her bottom completely dry before putting anything on it at each changing. Hope this helps!

Both of my sons had a problem with what sounds like the same thing. Its a yeast infection. If it is kind of pimply and has little red bumps and even blisters and very red. Try Lotrimin cream-the antifungal for feet. Put it all over her diaper area 4 times a day and put some other cream over it(desitin, AandD Ointment,or other). This is what my ped told me to do and it works. If she is really bad it might take a week to 2 weeks to completely heal(that how long it took my oldest son to heal). I hope this helps. I have never responded to any of these but I know how awful it feels to have the love of your life so uncomfortable and in pain.I just couldnt pass it up.

If it's a yeast infection, Lotrimin works.

If not...make a paste of Mylanta (NOT the minty kind, ds complained it stung) and cornstarch. Plaster (liberally) her diaper area with it before you put her to bed. If she wets a lot in the night and you need to change her, reapply. My son had horrible diaper rash just like you described. The Mylanta/cornstarch paste took the sting and ouch away in one night and the rash was usually gone a couple days later.

Hi Kim,

It definitely sounds like a secondary infection and though most everyone has mentioned yeast, it could also be bacterial like Moya mentioned. I sympathize with you because my daughter has very tender skin and I live by Boudreax's butt paste on a regular basis, but have run into the yeast several times. Only just recently did we have to deal with the bacterial and the pedi gave us bactroban to put on it and it cleared it up completely though it did take a full 10 days. definitely go to the dr because at this point it's been quite awhile and they'll be able to get you started on the right thing immediately. I did the presciption cream morning and night and butt paste throughout the day to keep her more comfortable. good luck!

As the mother of four children, I can tell you that A and D Ointment was the only thing that worked with my kids. (Don't use Vasoline as that might keep the pores clogged.) The doctor would have a prescription to give you if you think she needs it. However, the A&D was better than any prescription I know of. Also, try keeping the diaper off for a few hours at a time. I know it might be messy if she goes on the floor, but it will help to heal her little bottom.

My daughter had the same kind of diaper rash when she was 3 months old. What her pedi told me was to let her lay around without a diaper on to allow the air to get to it. I think they also gave me a prescription diaper rash cream, but that was almost 6 years ago now. I don't remember the name of it. I hope your lil girl gets to feeling better quickly.

we really like the aveeno diaper rash cream. my 3 y/o jused to get ferocious diaper rash and the dr gave us a steriod cream on more than one occassion. maybe something worth checking into?

My pedi told me to stop using diaper wipes and use wet washcloths. Don't wipe, just squeeze the water on her bottom. It's a little messy, but it cuts down on irritation. I've actually used a hair dryer (on cool!) to make sure my daughter was nice and dry before applying cream. I've read to use lanolin (which I've done, and it seemed to help.).

Hi Kim. I read your post and just had to respond immediately. My heart goes out to you and your little one. I was in a similar situation about a year and a half ago when my son was having back-to-back ear and sinus infections. The Pedi kept prescribing rounds of antibiotics, which would help clear up the infection, but gave him a horrible, nasty, painful diaper rash. He seriously had raw spots on his bottom and would scream if I even attempted to touch it with anything.

I can't believe no one has said this yet....but this will work!! It worked for my son...I had to finally break down and call the pediatrician's nurse and she told me this: clean the area with soap and warm water...then apply a THICK coat of AQUAPHOR healing ointment (found in diaper rash aisle or hand cream aisle) on the site...and then apply another thick coat of your diaper cream (A&D ointment works great). That's a little mess on your hands but it works!

Diaper up your little one after that...and then you'll notice an improvment at the next diaper change. This always worked for my son!! apparently, aquaphor acts like a water barrier.
hope this helps! nothing's worse than keep having to change your child's diaper and seeing red welts on their tushy -- and them screaming in pain!
