Can you know the sex at 13 weeks?

Hey Moms I am just wondering if anyone has ever 1.) found out your babies sex as early and 13 weeks. 2.) was it right?

I had a sonogram done last week to see "how far along" I was. I am nursing and they had a hard time trying to figure out a date of conception seeing as how my periods are very sporadic.

Anyhow the Doctor is like oh yes you are 13 weeks and it's a boy! I have 2 other children and they couldn't tell me the sex until I was around 6 months. So I am not sure how this doctor knows sooo soon. Not only that she was like" I am POSITIVE" because I said isn't it a little too early to tell?

So just wondering if anyone has found out the sex so early on? And it so were they right?

It is a little unusual to see the sex that early on. But since she said it is a boy, that is probably correct. If she had said it was a girl, then I would be concerned she was wrong because at 13 weeks the testicles could still descend out of the abdomen.

I had an ultrasound with my son at 11 weeks and they were pretty sure at that time, although they weren't willing to bet on it quite yet. If it's a boy, it's a little easier to tell if they are in the right position. I wouldn't bank on it until they do the 20 week ultrasound, but they could very well be right!

Don't bet the farm! I'm surprised they'd give you a definate sounding answer at this early date. Barring a DNA test, at 13 weeks I'd take anything on an ultrasound with a grain of salt.

my sister in law had an ultrasound done at 12 weeks and they told her it was a girl and it was correct. I alway thought that was too early to tell as well, but I guess not. Congrats on you new little one which ever way it turns out.

I had a u/s done at 12 weeks and my doc said it was a girl. I had them check at 20 weeks again and then every other u/s just to make sure. HEEHEE. Sure enough, I delivered a little girl. There is a 50/50 chance of being right anyway. Good luck!

I have a friend who is pregnsnt andthey dod tell her at 13 weeks.4 weeks later she had another ultrasound and it confirmed the sex of the baby.

I had an ultrasound at 12 weeks and they told me it was a boy. They were right. Congrats!

Yes, when I went in at 12 weeks they did an ultrasound and I could even tell that mine was a boy. But they wanted to still go back and check later but he was still a boy!

I was told at 12 weeks that the baby was a boy and sure enough I had a healthy baby boy!!!

Yes they can tell. I had an amnio at 11 weeks and at 13 weeks they told me the baby was a boy. They new by the chromosomes. He is 4 years old now and a little mischief maker. After that I was also able to see that he was boy. Ifit is a girl they can not always tell.

I had an ultrasound at 13 weeks and she told me it was a boy too. She was right! Seems if it is a boy they can "see a little more" than if it was a girl. But like another poster said- they have a 50/50 shot :)

Congratulations!

My sister had a sonogram at 12 weeks, and the doctor told her he was 85% confident that it was a boy. At 20 weeks they confirmed that it is indeed a boy, so they can sometimes tell. Apparently the anatomy looks the same except for the direction it is pointing...

Congratulations!

My doctors have always told me the sex of the baby around 18 weeks and they where right with everyone of them it's not hard to tell if it looks like 4 little lines it's a girl and if someing is sticking out there it's a boy

If I was told correctly or remember right... The baby grows a penis usually they cannot tell the sex because if it is a boy the penis isnt visable yet. Hope that made since. If it were me I would wait a little longer befor decorating the room blue!!!

Being an older pregnant woman, I had some very high tech ultrasounds w/ both of my boys. For both of them, at 12 weeks I was told I was having boys. At 12 weeks, the genitalia is not formed yet, but they can tell with 80 to 85% accuracy what it is going to be by what direction the genitalia is pointed--straight up is a boy, straight out is usually a boy but not as high an accuracy percentage, and straight down is a girl. Mine were both straight up at 12 weeks and 100% accurate.

I would tend to think they are guessing a little. The penis doesn't develop that early, so it would be impossible to actually tell. Think of it this way, the doc has a 50/50 chance of being right. It could have been a leg, anything. I wouldn't hinge my decorating/clothes buying on it just yet.

I would say mistakes can always be made at anytime. So prepare for either. But, usually if a mistake is made it is when they think it is a girl, and it isn't. But, if they think it's a boy, it probably is unless the umbilical cord is in the way. Congrats!

I was told at 13 weeks that it was a boy, and it was. It's easier to tell with boys. With my girl they couldn't say for sure until I was 20 weeks. So, yes it happened to me, and he was right.

There is a possibility that she was able to tell a boy just because the penis is a little easier to see in a sonogram although at that far along I would still think it would be difficult. Usually they won't even try to tell until 17 weeks. I'm now pregnant with my second boy and both were spread eagle when the doctor did the sonogram so it was pretty obvious even to me and my husband. The doctor may have seen that in the sonogram. I would definitely question the doctor about it. How did you know and can you show me?
