Any tips for getting a 3 year old girl to give a urine sample?

She has a possible uti and won't sit on the potty to get a urine sample. She has been potty trained for over a year,

I’m sure your pediatrician has more tips about collecting samples (so it won’t get contaminated) than parents would have.

If you’re trying to get a sample at home, do you have a container from doctor’s office? If you’re in office/clinic ask the nurse for help.
You don’t need a sample before you make an appointment.

I’m not sure the circumstances under which you’re trying to get a sample. If it’s in the clinic this might help. Your child may not be able to pee “on demand.” It helps to have her drink as much liquid as possible soon before going to appointment. It sometimes helps to turn on the water in the bathroom. I suggest you relax and calmly encourage her. Try to use humor. Know that if she can’t pee it’s OK. Try not to pressure her. If you can be relaxed about it, she’ll do better.

What does her pediatrician say? You must have talked to a doctor or nurse in the office or at a designated lab when they gave you the sterile container, right? They had no suggestions?

If they think she has a UTI, is that based on pain she’s having? Doesn’t it make sense that she would resist peeing because it hurts?

Due to the time it takes to collect random info on the internet, which brings you no closer to a lab sample, doesn’t it make sense to get on the phone with the medical people who know her best? I think Mamapedia is a great resource for ongoing parenting issues, but it’s not a good place for timely info you need for an immediate concern.

Like at home or are you at the pediatrician office? I never had to get a sample at home. Bring her to her Dr. They will be able to help.

Having had girls who have had to give a specimen as youngsters, I feel your pain. However, if she isn’t able to comply, that may lead to them catheterizing her, which is much more traumatizing.

If you are trying to do this at a doctor’s office, maybe try it at home. If at home, try it at the doctor’s office. Full bladder is important and making sure to use the wipes first to clean the area so the sample doesn’t get contaminated. I’d use a high value toy or treat to entice her to give it her best shot. While that isn’t a normal thing - to bribe (at least in my book), there are times that getting the job done outweighs anything else.

Good luck.
