diaper rash

Hi Jenny

I can't believe so manny people use the Maalox thing. I was going to suggest it to you and I thought you might think I was crazy. I feel better now that other people have heard of it too.

The only other thing is if you child has been on antibiotics recently before you treat it w/ all this stuff you might want to make sure it is not a yeast infection. If it is only on the bottom and not spreading to the front and thighs it is brobably not a yeast infection. If it is an over the counter ointment miconizal(sp). What ever that stuff is called that is in like monistat comes in just an ointment that can be used like a rash cream. The ped can order something too. I would also try to stay away from scented wipes and powders. Powders on little girls I don't think is recomended, but I guess if it is just on the bottom and just corn starch it would be ok. I think it can cause a bladder infection w/ little girls. You can even put a little corn starch in a warm tub, it will kind of cake to the bottom and protect it, but I don't know if that is ok w/ little girls.

Anyway, I have read any baby wipe w/ nitropropane in is not a good wipe to use it can often times cause the rash. Target brand and most store brands have it in he wipe. When my kids had a rash I just used a warm wash cloth. That can be hard w/ a messy diaper.

As far as the buttpaste, I have heard it is good to prevent diaper rash. Once a child has the rash and if the skin is broken not to use buttpaste because it has boric acid in it and it will burn.

I would also stay away from anything oil based like vasiline. Oil is a heat conductor, stick w/ creamy it will sooth better. Think about oil or butter in a hot skillet. It will sizzle. Oil will just draw the heat out and burn more.

So what I always mixed w/ the maalox was creamy neosporin, they have one w/ a pain reliever in it and it works like a charm.

If you can let the baby get some air too, That can get messy but it helps dry out the rash.

If the rash is not getting better in a day or so, or it spreads I would try getting the baby a bigger diaper, make sure it is not a yeast infection, dry the over the counter cream if you can't get the baby to the dr. and if it starts to help w/ in a diaper change or 2, bingo, you hit the nail on the head. If it gets worse and you try the yeast cream and that does not help, it is possible to be a strep b infection often caused by the nitropropane in the wipe so make sure your wipes don't have it and I think the creamy neopsorin and maalox will clear it up. I would get the baby to the dr. if none of all the ideas all of us have given you start to help soon.

Also if the baby is sick, or teething and has runny poops they can have a lot of acid in them so you might try sticking w/ the brat diet (bananas, apples, rice, toast) to help make them more solid and w/ less acid.

I wish you all the best, I know it breaks your heart to see your baby w/ a hurt bottom. I know every diaper change is dreded by her and you. Good luck! Keep us posted on what worked.

If the rash is just red then any diaper rash cream will do - The best I have found is Dr. Smith's - a little expensive but works great!! If it has little red bumps on it then it is not diaper rash it is yeast which regular cream will only irritate more. I took both of my kids to the Dr. around that age for yeast and they gave me e cream called nystatin (nistatin) which cleared it up right away - I only wish I knew and went sooner because nothing I did helped at all.

Try Neosporin and as much "air" time as possible. A lot of naked play is good for keeping skin dry. Just make sure to cover whatever she is laying on!

butt paste, you can get it at most grocery stores or Target pharmacy

If it gets too bad take her to the doctor because she may need a prescription for something a lil stronger. I usually used A&D and it seemed to help but like I said if it gets to the point where it's really sore and nothing seems to work take her to the doc because there might be something else wrong.

It is quite possible if you are feeding her solids that she is having an allergic reaction or rather a food intolerance type response. If you have started her on something new, stop it just to see if it goes away quicker. I say this because if it is not going away, then this means the offending substance is still going in. My daughter had a bad diaper rash appear 3 days after starting peas. I took her off them and it diappeared rather quickly. Until then I used a diaper rash ointment of all names called "butt paste" which can be purchased at walmart. It has boric acid in it as the only ingredient difference to other diaper rash ointments. Otherwise, the other thing that helped significantly but was uncomfortable for her somewhat was to use a soft wash cloth to wash her bottom for every diaper change and make sure it was dry as well. Another thought is it could be a fungal/yeast rash. Those are common in babies. Give her some probiotics by mouth. It won't hurt her and if her body doesn't need it she will just poop it out, so there is no harm in trying it. Sorry for being so blunt. :)

I hope your little one gets rid of her rash soon! Good luck and God Bless!

Becca :)

Hi Jenny,

I used to work for a pediatrician who recommended Triple Paste for diaper rash. I've used it on my kids and it is wonderful. It's a little pricy but so worth it.

I use only Ammen's powder on my boys when they have diaper rash.

I've seen recommendations for Butt Paste, A&D and others because powder scares a lot of mothers.

BBP! Bohahns butt paste! (hope thats spelled right) It smells like flea powder but it is the best stuff you can buy! Works like a charm!

Paladin Ointment...it's available at WalMart or KMart but you have to ask the pharmacist, it's behind the counter.

I liked the aveno.. My son had a bad rash after his shots.. funny I found out It was the darn Pampers wipes.. He is allergic to allll the pampers wipes... He blistered BAD!!! Peach, lilac, netural Name it!!!!
We tried about 5 different kinds of rash stuff NOTHING helped

Also try Cornstarch powder!!! and let the bottom go bearrrrr if you can for a while.. Air out ya know...

Good luck. Ouch not fun!!!!!

How long has she had the diaper rash? Are you sure it isn't a yeast infection? When my daughter was taking an antibiotic for an ear infection she developed what I thought was a severe diaper rash, but when I took her to the doctor for her re-check for the ear infection, they told me it was a yeast infection. So for a bad diaper rash I do several things: 1. stop using baby wipes and start using wet paper towels (the alcohol in the baby wipes will only irritate it more), 2. let her soak in a bathtub of water and baking soda (this will help dry it up), 3. keep her diaper off of her as much as possible (fresh air always helps), and 4. use Desitin, not the creamy but the original formula, it is 40% zinc oxide and will clear it up fast. If it is not a diaper rash and is a yeast infection, you can do 1 & 3, but do not use diaper rash cream. You need an over the counter yeast infection cream like Monistat. Apply it to the area 3 times a day and the yeast infection should clear up in a few days. Hopefully that should help, it is doesn't, I would contact your doctor's nurse line for more suggestions.

Flander's or Bohan's butt paste is a a great cream. You have to get it behind the pharmacy counter, just ask for it and they will give yaou a small container or a tube

Good Luck,
Patti

Gold Baun (sp) baby powder, can also be found with corn starch. It healed my daughter's diaper rash overnight the one time she had it. Now I use a little bit when I change her to prevent it.

Boy...everyone has the answer to this one huh??? Just kidding ladies, if you've had kids you've probably dealt w/ rash good luck Jenny on deciding which one to use.

Here's my two cents. No matter what you use, the most important thing is to keep them dry and changed often. Let her air out everytime you change her for a while. As far as creams Arbonne Baby Rash Cream and Creamy Desitin work great for me.

However, I had a doctor tell me the other day the absolute best thing for baby rash is Corona (sp)?? NOT the beer, it's a cream you buy at an animal store. He said it's the most healing and very safe for babies?? I have NOT tried it yet...but he swore by it.

Good Luck!!

Hi Jenny! My son who is 2 1/2 months has had a bad diaper rash and we used Boudreaux's Butt Paste. You can get it at any Walmart. It has worked well for me. My son now has a bad yeast infection on his bottom and was given an antibiotic, but if anyone has any other ideas on how to help my little fella let me know!!! Hope this helps!

Karrie

I've always liked Boudreaux's Butt Paste.

Jenny? Hold on to something, you are not going to believe this one. I've used it on all my kids and it worked. Brown some flour, that's it. Brown enough to last you for a while, let it cool and keep it in a zip lock bowl or bag. Let me know how it works

Hi Jenny:

Arbonne Skincare has great baby care products. Which one is a diaper ointment that is natural. I have heard great things about it.

If you are interested in trying let me know and I can order it for you.

Ok, now note: I am NOT a Doctor! I am going to suggest something that my Dr. recommended and if this works you need to have your child see a Doctor ASAP!

What you do is go to the store and buy womens yeasty infection med. that is over the counter. It MUST be the 7 day stuff that has the extra soothing cream. Apply the cream to diaper rash like you would diaper ointment. (NOTE!!! don't use this method unless you have had diaper rash for several days after starting normal ointment and it is not going away because it could exsarbate the diaper rash problem!!!) IF the diaper rash goes way useing this method your child should see a doctor ASAP! The reason for this is because a yeast infection in a child over a month old is sometimes caused by sexual abuse and your child NEEDS to be checked out! You might want to think about changing daycares as well. Now before you freak out on the sexual abuse possablity I am also going to tell you that it could be something benign like you having a high yeast content and breastfeeding, taking a bath with your child/not cleaning out the bathtub really well before baby took hers, or a family member having a high yeast content (this could be dad too!) and then washing her clothing with that family members clothing. (Though the last one is less likely unless you are doing cloth diapers.)
