Fairy Wings and Giraffe Boots

We visited a local farm market today As the kids were playing in the water, another group of moms came up with their kids to play. I noticed the little girl was dressed perfectly… pink shirt, matching shorts, sandals, fairy wings. Wait, fairy wings? Yes, fairy wings. Big, giant fairy wings strapped to her back.

I laughed to myself and then realized just two days ago I let my children go through the entire day wearing their pajamas and rain boots. Matthew was sporting Buzz Lightyear pajamas and his giraffe rain boots. Ben opted for the superhero look with Spiderman pajamas and frog rain boots. I let them go to WalMart, the park and various other public places dressed like this.

Anyone who isn’t already a mom is shaking their head saying "I’d NEVER let my kids wear something ridiculous out of the house. But we were all better moms before we had kids, right? We have to pick our battles and that wasn’t one I cared to fight. So I let them walk around looking like complete fools (albeit Superhero fools..Captain Colorblind! perhaps).

Then I spoke to a dear friend on the phone and she said that her 6-year-old was currently obsessed with wearing the ultra-chic leopard print trend. Leopard boots, leopard pants, leopard shirt…but none of the leopard prints matched.

When does that have to end? Does there come a time when you just can’t dress that way anymore and get away with it? Because I’d really like to wear my Hello Kitty pajamas to work this week.

Hmmm… So what crazy fashion trend have you let your child go out in public wearing?

I love it! My daughter spends many a day in her PJs all day, and various ensembles that don't actually "go" together, but it's all good when she's happy!

I'm so lazy that I put her to bed in clothes that are for school the next day so she can just roll out of bed, eat breakfast, brush her teeth -- and I brush her hair, if I remember.

When our eldest son was young he refused to wear pants that didn't have pockets- he was always picking something up and carrying it in them. So I made him a pair of coverals and took a piece of every scrap fabric I had and added pockets, all shapes and sizes. He wore this everywhere including church a time or two, until the fateful day they didn't fit anymore. As an adult he still puts things intohis pockets and likes wearing cargo pants because of it.

My oldest used to wear wings and a tutu everywhere we went. She put them on over her clothes. Honestly, I liked that better. People knew she was dressed up. Now she is 6 and insists on wearing all pink when we leave the house--pink pants, pink shirt, pink hat, pink shoes. The pinks don't match and she looks ridiculous, but it's just not worth the battle. So out we go.

My kids always loved their Halloween costumes and would wear them for weeks afterwards - everywhere we went! One year I had to put my foot down - the costume was Pete's dragon and the tail stuck out in back. They kept knocking things off tables or counters!

My 5 year old son is camo obsessed. But as mentioned above, none of the camo he wants to wear matches each other. Black, brown, green, digital, you name it and he has it from hats to underwear and everything inbetween. Most days it is not worth the argument and tears to try to get him matching or visual less fractured. He's happy though and it's a change from last year when he wore his SWAT vest from Halloween for an entire year!
