I was told to start taking supplements and vitamins 3 months before I got pregnant but I do not know which ones I should start taking. What were you told to take when you were pregnant?
I don't know anyone that started taking anything BEFORE getting pregnant, and once u are the doctor will prescribed you prenantal ones.
It was suggested to me by my physician to take prenatal vitamins when I decided to start trying to have a baby. Most importantly you need 400mg's of folic acid daily. I take a b-complex vit. daily now. Good Luck!
Hi Bonnie. I work for a wellness company that makes natural vitamins and they work better simply because the ingredients are fresher. I would love to talk to you about them. Also, you can work from home with them after you have the baby.
I did not take prenatal vitamins but I did take omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils for healthy brain development.
I hope this helps.

Hi Bonnie!
How wonderfull it is that you are getting your body ready for this awesone experience, congratulations!!
Basically you want to load up on Folic Acid (actually recomended to start 6 month pre), as is one of the most important vitamins that you'll need and you'll loose as you pregnancy progresses. The dosage recomended is 3 mg a day. Foloc Acid is in the dark green veggies, Orange Juice, etc so you can take vitamins and also get it from a healthy and balanced diet. You can definately ask you OBGYN to prescribe some of the prenatal ones, or just go with the over the counter ones, the multivitamins, since, if I m not mistaking the main difference is the extra Folic Acid in the pre natal ones!
I wish you the best!!
Andrea
I went to WalMart and got the GreatValue brand prenatals (OB said that was fine) and took those each day. I also took folic acid each day throughout the pregnancy, along with Iron, Viactive (calcium chews - they are yummy, lol), and Omega-3 capsules. I also drank the Ensure Healthy Mom shake each morning. My pregnancy went perfect, no health issues at all (which was amazing b/c I was very high risk) and Rori turned out just perfect (w/ a full head of hair too!). Good luck!
I love the Rainbow Light pregnancy. It is Whole Food based, and I would take the 6 a day,not the 1 a day. I have been taking my Rainbow lights since before my pregnancy and throughout nursing. My nails grew strong, and it makes your pee very bright, I take it as a sign my body is really absorbing it. You can find them at Whole Foods, Sevananda, and other natural grocery stores.
One of the reasons your doctor told you to take vitamins before you get pregnant is to build up the lining of the uterus to reduce your risk of miscarriage and help your baby implant on your uterine wall. The vitamins help qith your Folic Acid intake since. I always used over the counter pre-natal vitamins and my OB/GYN always said they were okay. I've heard the GNC store brand of pre-natal vitamins aren't too expensive and are (relatively) small for a multi-vitamin. Good Luck!!!
Just take regular prenatal vitamins (generic is fine). As soon as we started trying for another baby, my ob told me to go ahead and start taking them. I took them for 10 months before we actually got pregnant, but it helps prepare your body for pregnancy. Good luck!
Congrats on thinking about becoming a mom. When I was trying & during my pregnancy my OB said it was fine to take over the counter prenatal vitamins. She said they are the same as the ones she would prescribe, but cheaper. I used the brand One Source Prenatal vitamins, which I purchased at WalMart.
Good luck!
I asked my ob/gyn and he prescribed prenatal vitamins for me. My insurance paid for them. I know they can be purchased over the counter though.
When I found out I was pregnant nearly everyone told me to take a prenatal vitamin with a high level of folic acid in them. I usually buy mine a the grocery store. That is all I take now! Good luck! Jess
I could not take prenatal vitamins because of the high level of iron. It made me horribly sick. My doctor told me to tkae Flinstones vitamins and I had no problems.
You definately want a prenatal vitamin. They sell them over the counter, and I'd take a prenatal becasue they are specially formulated for what you need. Extra Folic acid, for one thing. I also took DHA (fish oil) during both of my pregnancies, and I really think it has helped my kids. They're genuises, of course!!! (ha)
Good luck!

You can buy "prenatal" vitamins over the counter at almost any drug store. You can also go see your OBGYN and tell him you are going to start trying in the next couple of months and he will write you a prescription. Good luck!
Bonnie,
Ask your dr. They should prescribe a prenatal vitamin like Citracal. You can get over the counter ones, but I'd got with a 'scrip. You want to be sure you're getting enough Folic Acid and Calcium.
Good luck getting pregnant. It's fabulous.
Hi. I know you probably won't want to hear this but I would consider waiting to have kids. My husband had kids right away and I love my kids and family but I do wish that we had had a little more time to enjoy each other before having kids. You are only young once. Why not get established and save some money. Think of how much more you can give a child with extra money and knowledge you and your husband will gain in a few years. Also enjoy the time you two have together now. There is always time to start a family. I hope that didn't sound too preachy, I just wanted to pass that along.
I started just taking one of the prenatal vitamins that had folic acid in it. I got mine from Target - they have a rainbow on them. In addition, if you increase your intake of protein also that helps.
a standard multivitamin with folic acid. at walmart usually bottom self there is a pre-natal vitamin. it doesnt matter the brand name....you will soon find out that it matters which one you can actually keep down. they tend to stink to high heaven and that sucks for pregnant woman that have a heightened sense of smell.
I actually asked my friends if they had pre-natals that they didn't/couldn't use and they're fine, but you need anythung with folic acid.
