Selective enrollment HS tests

Hi, moms. My question is on the selective enrollment HS tests for the city of Chicago. When do kids take them? What is this test called? Anybody used any programs/books/tools to succesfully prepair their kid for this test? Thank you all in advance for any info.
Also on the same subject of HSs: Does any one know where my son can take AP HS classes that are not very pricy but of a good substance and quality. We are currently taking Northwestern classes and they are very expencive. Thanks again.

Hi Myra,
First you must fill out a selective enrollment application. You can get this at any of the selective enrollment high schools, or if your child is in a CPS, the elementary school should be able to provide it. At my son's school, we fill out the application and give it back to the school counselor, who will fill out the parts pertaining to testing and grades. I believe the deadline for submitting this application is mid December.

After you submit your application, CPS will mail you a letter of eligibility to take the entrance exam. The letter will give you an assigned date, time, and location of testing. I do not know of any study material that is specific for preparing for this exam. My son will be taking the test this year, though, so if we come accross something I will be happy to pass that information on to you. Or you could call CPS admissions at (773)-553-2060.

I don't know of any AP high school classes, but if your child is interested in math, the University of Chicago offers a Young Scholars Program. It is a math program and they just meet every other Saturday. It's free, and my son enjoys it. He's on the math team at his elementary school, and the math teacher recommended it. If you want more info on that the website is www.math.uchicago.edu/ysp/

Best of luck to you and your child!
