I have been trying to find a social/networking or culture/support group for parents of inter-racial children. I have a 13 year old daughter who is bi-racial. We live in a community that is not as culturally diverse as I would like and am hoping to find a positive outlet to give her some exposure to other cultures. If you are part of a group, know of a group or have any suggestions for me, please share. Im up for anything. There truly does not seem to be much positive resources for African American children in MN.
I would try meetup.com...there are a ton of groups on there and you should be able to find a group that suits you. I saw one group called Melting Pot Moms. I hope you find what you are looking for!!
I feel you pain! I have two adopted children and one is African American and Native American. We are struggling too to include her in her cultures and there is not a lot. Is your daughter adopted? There are a few more resources for adopted transracial families. Harambee Villages are for adopted African American Chidlren and I attend a great ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) for adopted families in St. Paul. It's a awesome mom website I actually like it better than mommasource sshhh... don't tell anyone. You can join different groups and have discussion, ask questions, post pictures I love it. There are a ton of groups with bi-racial themes.
Thank you all for your great responses and support! I had previously checked out meetup.com and did not have much success but decided to try once more and actually put out a request on their site today. I also checked out the website for African American Family Services and left a voicemail for someone there asking if they knew of anyone or anything that would help. Hopefully I will hear something back from them next week. I also checked out cafemom.com which seems to be a cross between mamasource.com and myspace.com. I posted a question on their site as well but have not heard anything as of yet. There seems to be a much bigger following/community of moms on this site but I havent ruled out cafemom.com just yet. I have yet to look into Harambee Village but plan to do that tomorrow. I am running out of time for anything today. Where does the time go? Oooooh the life of a working paretn, gotta love it!
Again, thank you all for your support and advice. I will let you all know what happens with the leads you have given me. If nothing turns up I might just have to start something of my own.
