I have a friend who is 90 years old who lives out-of-state. She is thinking of moving to the Raleigh-area, and so we're looking around for affordable elderly housing. I've been to the Raleigh HOusing Authority website and the list of housing options is lengthy. She is able to care for herself pretty well -- not quite at the point of needing assisted living -- but is slowing down considerably. Does anyone have recoccomendations or know anything about the affordable elderly housing options in the Raleigh area? Her income is limited, so she couldn't afford to pay more than a few hundred dollars a month for rent.
Hi Claire,
My grandmother is 85 and lives here

It is called Highland Commons Village in Cary, NC 27511 just in case the link doesn't work. I don't know if the Cary area is what you may be looking for but this place is REALLY nice!
It is a very social place. It is located very close to downtown cary. There are weekly movies, Bingo, monthly celebration of b-days and other stuff all organized by the residents. The C-tran (public transit bus) also picks up right at the building and goes to local areas. The best thing is that rent is on a sliding scale (based on income. One should apply ASAP as there is often a wait list.
here is some info from their web page:
Rents are based on income -- call for more details.
$345-$580 per month - One bedroom, one bath (water and sewer included)
$416-$700 per month - Two bedroom, one bath (water and sewer included)

Good Luck to her! That is so great that she is 90 and able to live on her own. If she happens to go here send me a private message and I can introduce her to my grandmother!
