I would like to go to school to learn sign language and become a sign language interpreter. Do you know of what programs are out there? How much do they cost? Do grants apply to these types of schools. do you know of any success stories? Oh I should mention that I am in Queen Creek.
Hi Wendy, WOW it is funny that you wrote about this because I just sent a post out the other day about something similar! I am a former sign language interpreter from CA. I fell in love with it in Junior College and got an AS degree in Deaf Studies. What I can tell you about the career are these things: Like anything, if you love it and work hard, you will be successful. With this profession, you are constantly learning new things. This can be wonderful and also very frustrating, at least for me. I love the fact that you never get bored because of it, but there will always be someone better than you. There are so many levels of competency and it's great when you see yourself improving as the years go on. I gave up on myself about 8 years ago, and am going to start up again. If you ever want to get together, let me know. I hear that Phoenix College has a good program. The best way to learn, however,is to immerse yourself in the culture.
Hope this helps!
Anna.
Wendy,
I am an ASL student at MCC. They have classes from basic to interpreting. You might want to try it at a community college first for price reasons and also to see if it is really something you will enjoy. So far I love the language and have had lots of fun learning.
Good luck!!!
