Newly pregnant and sooooo nauseous. Please help!

I had that kind of nausea with my second child. i called it "eating sickness" because every time I would eat anything, i would feel ill. what worked for me was chicken broth, or other brothy soup, almost no substance, just broth. I still get wonton soup when i have chinese, because i remember how good it was to me, since i could eat it and not feel sick. sparkling apple juice, or one of those juice-like sodas were usually ok too (when water wasn't working out). Uusually I would just try to have chicken broth on hand wit every meal...to sip when i felt ill. good luck!

Hi Tricia,

I feel sorry for you being so nauseous! What helped me was drinking ginger-ale! It is always good for an upset stomach. I hope it will help you as well!

Good luck, and enjoy your pregnancy!
Ella.

Congrats on your pregnancy!!! I was the same way with my pregnancy. The dr. gave me Zofran--it just melts on your tongue and helps relieve the nausea. I was scared to take anything but it's totally safe and I have a lot of friends that have taken it also. I would ask your dr. to prescribe some for you. Good luck! =)

Hi Tricia,

Congratulations!! I had very bad nausea, and vomiting in my 2nd pregnancy. It was so bad that I lost 12 lbs in a few weeks. I could not keep down even water..My doctor prescribed zofran and it helped me a lot! I had to take it till I was around 26 weeks far...

good luck,
Mini

Try watermelon, lemonade and potato chips. From a Johns Hopkins study. I couldn't handle the chips, but the watermelon and lemonade saved me--especially if it was next to me before I got out of bed or out of a chair, etc.

Have you tried those motion sickness acupressure wristbands? They help some ladies with pregnancy nausea.

You just need to eat. I too felt very sick, threw up the whole 9 mths, but if you don't eat you will feel worse. I know it is hard to eat when you feel like this, but trust me you will feel better once you eat.
Try lemon drops right before trying to eat. Also I liked foods with no smell, fruit or veggies, plain bread, anything you can. Once you absorb some of the stomach acid you wont feel as sick and you can eat a normal meal.
Try eating when you first wake up even before you get out of bed, have hubby bring you toast!
Best luck, congrats!

Dear Tricia, I felt ill for the entirety of my pregnancies and I sincerely hope for you it is temporary. I found it very important to get adequate amounts of protein and I kept peanuts with me at all times. If I felt like losing my stomach was imminent, I'd have several peanuts and it would keep it at bay. Also, making sure I had access to fresh air (a breeze) was a big deal: open window, turn the fan on, etc. Good luck and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I used emetrol - its an over the counter anti-nausea med that my doc said was totally safe. It helped take the edge off and doesnt taste too bad. Also, there is the option of taking Zofran - many of my friends took it during pregnancy and said it was a lifesaver. You should ask your doc about it.

www.hylands.com they have homeopathic nausea pills and I am not exaggerating it only takes a few seconds for the nausea to go away. Also a little lemon juice in your water will help you to keep the liquids down and they also say if you put a few slices of lemon in a zip bag and carry in your purse then when you feel nauseous you open the bag and smell them. Of course keep the saltines by your bed and eat a few before you get out of bed. Good Luck!

Morning sickness is horrible! I feel so sorry for you! I had morning sickness with both of my pregnancies and nothing seemed to work but time. You might want to see if your Dr. can recommend something for you. I hope you find relief! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I was nauseous and throwing everything up when i was Preg. with my son. And the only thing that calmed my stomach was ginger peach tea served hot. Now the tea has ginger in it clearly BUT the peach over powers it . If that doesn't do it Go to Babies R Us and buy the lolly pops or suckers. I can't remember the name but it says on it for nausia.

Hi Tricia -

I have dealt with this issue for many years and for many friends, family and clients - and here is what I recommend in 99% of cases:

Pregnancy nausea is caused by larger than normal fluctuations in blood sugar (among other things related to hormonal changes) - and the way to deal with this is not to eat more sugar, but less - what works is to cut all sugar out of your diet - all refined flour and sugar - depending on the severity, you may need to cut out especially sweet fruit for a while too (bananas, mangoes, etc.). This really works - it resets your body's insulin response to what it is supposed to be. It will give your body a better capacity for regulating blood sugar. It takes a bit of a diet adjustment, and once you cut out all sugar it will take 3 or 4 days for your body to adjust (you'll still feel sick for those 3 or 4 days) but after that you will feel a ton better. Try it!

Good luck!

Congratulations! I too was sick like that. Try your local health food store-I drank a tea that helped. Also, those anti nausea bracelets helped a little as well. Ginger candies were terrible, but ginger ale helped a bit!
Good luck-

ps-I had a friend that tried acupuncture and that helped

I was so sick I couldn't even get to work at all. I felt like I was dying. None of the natural remedies worked, and I wound up finally getting a prescription for Zofran, which is used by people receiving cancer treatments, to help alleviate nausea. It was the only thing that worked at all. If your case is milder, some of the more natural remedies may help.

Hi Tricia,
Congrats to all those who could get by on natural stuff. It was a joke for me, though. I was sick 24 hours a day for all 4 of my pregnancies clear through labor and delivery, having to decide if I should vomit or push. Zofran was the only thing that did it for me, too. Most OBs don't start giving prenatal care until your first visit at 10 weeks, but give your OB a call. Tell him/her how sick you are and ask for some Zofran. Just do it. It's not the "magic pill" and doesn't make everything go away, but it helps more than anything else out there. Our insurance for some bizarre reason didn't want to pay for any more than 15 pills every 23 days. HA. You're supposed to take it every 8 hours as needed, so do the math. But if that happens to you, there should be some paperwork from the insurance company that the doctor has to fill out saying, yes, you really do need it 3 times a day, and that should take care of that. And it can all be done by fax to make the process faster. Just thought I'd add that in case you run up against the same problem. Nobody at our insurance was very forthcoming with that important piece of information until we just about had a cow on someone over it on the phone with them. Best of luck.

Acupuncture! It can do a lot for you during pregnancy. Just be sure you tell the practitioner you are pregnant. There is a college where I live so I got inexpensive treatments but I also paid full $$ for a talented acupuncturist when my rib cage started expanding. Try drinking fresh Ginger tea(not dried in tea bags). Buy fresh Ginger and slice it into chunks and boil it up. Make a bunch and put it in the fridge. Also if you have heartburn (I did and nausea because of it) you can take pepcid AC to reduce the acid (I took it most of my pregnancy).

Good Luck!

Try room temperature clear beverages (7up and Sprite since you can't handle Ginger Ale) or room temperature water. Also, the Gatorade style drinks are good because they have potassium. Also, take tiny TINY nibbles of foods. Some people tolerate bland foods like plain rice, crackers, saltines, pasta, etc. Other people can get away with sweeter foods such as yogurt, ice cream, fresh fruit, hard candies, etc. Also try a variety of foods that have little to no smell. If nothing helps, I'd recommend talking to your doctor to see if you can take something and to make sure everything is going as it should (baby ok, you not losing too much weight, etc). Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

Vit B6 deficiency causes nausea. B6 needs vit b12 as well for uptake, so do a B complex drop. take the drops of b complex, under the tounge 3 times a day. see if it helps. ps- dont be alarmed with optic yellow urine - due to the vit b.

ps.. sugar kills vit B levels.

An organic herbal tea named No to morning sickness tea worked wonder for me and eased my nausea completely.
