Need to Aquire a Tax ID # for new day care home

I just started doing home day care this year. And I think I need a tax ID # in order to give that number to parents when they claim what they've paid for child care on their taxes. What I am looking for is how I go about getting a tax ID #. Thought I should get it soon, with tax season just around the corner. I did internet searches for it and they all charge fees for getting a tax ID number, and I'm not sure what is legit and what is not. Seems to me like you should get that number from the government and not some internet company asking for money to give you a government ID number. Could anybody tell me the procedure for this? I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks so much!

They are free from a govt website.

Hi Cheryl, your tax ID# is the number on your daycare license from DCFS. If you are not licensed then you could give the parents your social security number for them to file taxes with. Good Luck!!

Hi Cheryl,

I am a CPA and also have a home daycare provider like yourself. You need a tax ID if you are going to incorporate or if you need to show it on some other form (licensing?). You can obtain this number for free from the IRS, by filing a form which can be obtained from www.irs.gov. It is the "SS-4" form. Otherwise, you will use your social security number and you will file your daycare income and expenses on a schedule "C" on your personal income tax return. Make sure to keep track of your expenses, as well as, your income so you can claim all of it at year end. It's also a good idea at the end of the year to have some sort of slip that says how much you received from the family and both of your signatures on it, along with your tax ID or social security number. Hope this helps.

I WOULD START WITH YOUR LOCAL LIBARY AND CAN ASK THEM THEY WOULD KNOW WHO TO GET ONE. OR GO TO THE UNEMPLOYEMENT LINE THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU A NUMBER SINCE THEY ARE GOVERNMENT OFFICE

When I fill out my paperwork for taxes, it asks me for the Tax ID# or a social security number for my daycare provider. You may be able to use your social security number. Check into it.

I used my account for this when we became incorporated we got a tax ID number. She is an account thaqt specializes in daycares. I started my business last year Aug and love it too.
I can give you my accountants number if you need it. I know some providers use their SSN.

Hello, my name is Kathryn Mueller. I have been doing family childcare in the Streamwood area for 12 years, and yes, you are right, you can get a tax id number for free. Here's the e-mail address of my accountant: [email protected],
He has received training through Tom copeland who runs the Red
Leaf press organization. Mr. Copeland knows more about family childcare and the tax code than anyone in the nation, I am quite sure. The tax id number is just the beginning. The tax code for fcc is different than for other businesses. Mike offers a 45 minute free consultation. I would recommend that you contact him. He can tell you about how to go about getting your id number (i know it's at the IRS site somewhere, and you get it immediately, and for free) as well as how to set up your records for taxes in our business. Then, if you think he's the accountant for you, call him early in the new year to set up an appointment for your 06 taxes.

And speaking of family childcare, I am the leader of an informal group of family childcare providers who meet at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Schaumburg. Our mission is one of friendship, support, and education. If you would ever be interested in attending a meeting as our guest, please contact me. My phone number is 630-504-1207. My e-mail address is [email protected].
