need help

ok so im 17weeks pregnant with my 3rd child and this has been the worst of the 3. im noticing that as i keep having children my sickness gets worse. well since i've been pregnant with this child i have a bad (i mean very bad) gagging problem. ive gone to my dr. with this but they say its nothing. they do a whole check up on me and saying nothings wrong. its like i have a lot of phlem or mucus in my throat and it causes me to gag. (now this part is kind of gross but its a detail that might help) when i spit out its not green or yellow its clear like saliva. and on a bad day because i gag and spit out so much i notice blood in it. yes i get nauseas from all this and the dr put me on 25mg of phenergan every 8hours but that doesnt help with my gagging problem. i just wanted to know if anyone has any idea what this could be. thanks for the help in advance.

first off, for the nausea, i would try vitamin B-6 instead of the phenergan. worked like a charm for both my pregnancies, i had horrible morning sickness (all-day sickness really!) until i started taking the added vitamin (you can take up to 70mg per day, check to see how much is in your pre-natals first)
as for the gagging and mucous, i would try cutting out dairy products and see if that helps. when your sinuses are draining due to allergies or a cold, dairy products thicken the mucous and can make you gag or cough up phlegm.

I second the suggestion to cut out dairy, but you will need to ensure that you are getting calcium from an alternate source. Check your prenatals...some have iron, some have calcium...but usually not both since calcium inhibits the absorption of iron.

Also, be very sure that you are getting enough fluids (water, water, water). This will help keep your secretions thin. I drank a lot of peppermint herbal tea with honey during my pregancy. It was a tastier way to get all my fluids, the peppermint helps with the nausea, and the honey soothed my raw throat.

Im not sure its your pregnancy, I have had the same problem the last few months because of the weather changes. You may try some sudafed (i think its ok, but check with your doc, if its not find aallergy/sinus medication). Hope that helps

Hi Vianca,,
I got real sick like that but it was because of certain smells.Maybe you could try and track that for a few days and see.Hope it helps.
Good Luck Lanette

The phlem could be alergy. Get completely off of dairy. Dairy is very mucus producing. You can use a calcium supplement. You may already be getting enough with your prenatals. Good luck.

I want to echo a PP- sounds like a dairy allergy. I am pregnant and am SOOO suffering from my milk indulgence. Try nut or rice milk (my fav is hazelnut, especially in coffee!)

Vianca,

Your gagging has everything to do with your pregnancy and the raging hormones going off to support your pregnancy! I had horrible gagging sensation with my first and second pregnancy, and with my second my doctor kindly explained that it was hormones causing all this unpleasantness! It surfaced wit both around the three month mark, and stayed awhile! I used gum and mints to help cope with the issue! I hope this helps!

I never brought up solids, but dry heaved and released clear fluid too. the whole pregnancy and could not stand to even smell red sauce like maranara sauce. I ended up having gaul stones.

Sounds like allergies to me

could it be allergies? are you better after taking the phenergan?
you might want to try yoga ( I know, when?) but if you do the stretching, relaxing and upside you might move some of that phlegm around and have less of it. Also, do you change your diet when you are pregnant? have you tried cutting out milk for a few days? My only other suggestion would be to see an ear nose and throat doctor before you give up. You still have 23 weeks and this doesn't sound like fun.

Hi, First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! I had horrible morning sickness with all four of my babies and I frequently gagged on my own saliva. When you are pregnant you have a lot more water in your body than usual, thus a lot more saliva. The only thing that helped was for me to suck on one of those hard candy peppermint discs--you know the white ones with little red stripes? Check the ingredients on the bag though--it has to have real peppermint oil, not imitation peppermint oil. Peppermint oil naturally helps to settle your stomach and sucking on the hard candy helps keep the extra saliva manageable. I know it sounds too simple to work, but I swear by it. I hope this helps! Good luck! Shannon

Not sure if this is along the same lines but I've been pretty sick through my pregnancy. I'm now 27 weeks and didn't have the gagging but would feel like I have a lump in my throat and then would need to vomit. As I would start it would basically be spit. Sorry trying not to be too gory. My doctor said that it sounds like my Finkter (Spelling?) muscle (the muscle that closes off the stomach to my esophagus) was not closing due to the hormones and basically we just needed to calm the stomach but I may still be sick off and on. First we tried Tums (no), then went to Maloxx (better but no) he now has me on Prilosec which surprisingly has almost completely stopped the feeling sick and gotten rid of the lump in my throat. Yours may be different but that's what has helped me. Good Luck

You have reflux - get your doctor to do an upper GI. I have been having the same gagging thing. Since you are pregnant - the fetus is probably pushing your stomach up making stomach acid rise in your throat which is probably why you're seeing blood (stomach acid is the strongest acid known) - when I was carrying my daughter, who is now 26, the same thing happened to me. She was longer than I had room for. Unfortunately, I have had problems since then but I noticed it got really bad in the last year or so. I was going through some tough times - lost my dad - and just attributed my problem to nerves and tension. However, in the last two months, I have been taking medicine for it and it has stopped. I wish I could remember what I'm taking but I can't. Talk to your doctor again and stay on them until they give you some credit for knowing your own system.

Hi Vianca,

I had the same problem with my first pregnancy. I never actually coughed/spit anything out, but would be out somewhere and suddenly have to run for the bathroom and hang over the sink gagging. I felt like my entire throat was clogged with mucus (gross).

With my second pregnancy, I had a similar issue. I'd be in the middle of doing something, and suddenly have to run brush my teeth (about 10 times a day). While I was brushing, I would be gagging. I think this just has something to do with hormones. With my second pregnancy, the issue didn't resolve until about 21 weeks or so. Your allergies could just be making the whole issue worse, too? Anyway, I tried to control it by taking deep breaths through my nose and telling myself over and over that I wasn't going to gag! This seemed to help a little.
Good luck with your pregnancy!

This is bile that you are spitting up and your Dr. needs to do something about this NOW. You have a reflux problem and this can turn into something bad. To start with you do not have anything in your stomach when this happens or you might have vomit instead. But the blood is a concern and he needs to know this NOW> let him know today.

I would go to a another doctor for a second opinion. Or call your former doctor(s) who delivered your other children and ask them for advice. I will keep you in my prayers. I know how morning sickness can be overwhelming sometimes.

ok i know this might sound silly but this happens to me when i eat too much sugar. like a bag of skittles i get a huge mucus and its gross. perhaps its alot of sugar your eating? hope you find the answer you need. I noticed Sharron said something about peppermint oil. I wanted to breast feed and had a very hard time. They said absoultely no peppermint at all it makes milk harder to produce. I eat alot of peppermints all the time and my milk came in but only produced about 1/2 an oz on a good day for the entire day!!!

I have to take sudafed 2 times a day or the samething happens to me. I have very bad sinus problems this time aroound and the sinus med has really worked

You didn't mention what you eat, or how often. The only thing that saved me from morning sickness and gagging all day (which I was doing) was eating all the time. I had a fruit bar FIRST thing in the morning, I mean before I even got out of bed, and nibbled on crackers, fruit and veggie sticks throughout the day, as well as ate regular meals. I tried to keep it as healthy as possible, but endulged as well- just to make sure there was always something in my stomach. And I was thinner after I had my babies than I was before I got pregnant. I still eat throughout the day and have held a great weight. I understand that weight may not be an issue, it's the discomfort, but it was sure a bonus to get into this habit. Though I really have to watch it as I get hungry more often, so I keep granola bars in my purse. I wish you the very best of luck!!
