Nausea & Upset Stomach...how to relieve these?

Hi Moms,
I am looking for feedback from others who have had success working through the nausea phase a pregnancy. I am expecting my second child and am experiencing nausea much worse with this child than the first. I am having a real hard time eating because I don't find much food interesting and when I do eat I get an upset stomach. Any advice? Thanks!

Angela - I had some success with warm clear liquids such as tea warm water and broth. My nausea was mostly caused by the extra mucous we have when pregnant so drinking these liquids helped to break it down somewhat and provide a little relief.

Congrats on your new addition.

Hi Angela,

My Aunt gave me some advice that worked for me.... tomatoes. For her, it was stewed tomatoes. For me, it was anything tomato based, even raw tomatoes. I also found that if I always had a little something in my stomach it was much more manageable. I ALWAYS had an organic granola in my pocket. I would nibble 2 or 3 through the day. It helped tremendously.

Ginger tea works wonderfully when you're really feeling sick. And if you end up with heartburn, go to a vitamin store and pick up some Papaya Extract tablets. You take them just like a TUMS or something.... but they are all natural, so there is no issue with taking too many. You may experience a little loose stool...but I welcomed that since I was constipated during pregnancy, despite drinking 2 liters of water per day.

I had TERRIBLE heartburn... the papaya extract worked MUCH better then any TUMS I took.

I am pregnant with my third. When I feel nausea I eat two ginger snap cookies. I often don't want to but it does help. You may want to talk to your OB they can prescribe something if you vomit often.

I was nausious and sick for the first 11 weeks of my pregnancy. Food with ginger in it and scrambled eggs seemed to be the only things I could keep down, and my doctor even allowed me to have coke because the coke syrup helped and it was better then being hospitilized for dehydration. About 5 weeks in someone told me about "sea bands" which helped a ton. They are wrist bands for travel sickness and you can find them in the isle with dramamine.

Good luck
Robin

Fresh ginger tea! It works wonders! Get fresh ginger and cut a couple pieces (no need to take the skin off). Put it into a small pot of water. Add lemon, lime or any other zest you like. Boil for at least 20 mins. Strain it and drink the tea! Works so good!

Also try anything with ginger!

I put ginger in everything when I was pregnant, all the other moms are correct...the tea works! I lived on Kashi Go Lean frozen waffles(no idea why), sourdough pretzels, Vernors, Real Fruit frozen lime bars and scrambled eggs. Not all at once, of course, I couldn't eat a full meal so I snacked constantly. Congrats and good luck to you!

Congratulations first of all. You are most likely having a girl. I have two boys and my morning sickness was the worst with my daughter. Experts say it is because of the extra female hormones in your system. Anyway those pregnancy hard candies work and eating saltine crackers seem to help. Make sur you try to eat something because it is worse when there is nothing in your stomach.

Congratulations! Have you tried wearing sea bands? they are bands you wear on your wrist for motion sickness. I got mine from my doctor but look where they sell products for motion sickness. Also this sounds weird but smell fresh sliced lemons. I kept them in the car in a baggie, as driving was difficult for me. I read this in a magazine, it worked for me and for others I have passed it on to.

I so feel for you I was sick and nauseous throughout most of my pregnancy.

Cheerios and mac/cheese were staples for me.

Angela, I feel your pain! I too am expecting my 2nd child, and the nausea is absolutely horrible, lasting nearly 24 hours a day! When I went to my OB for my first appt last week, she prescribed Zofran to help with the nausea. I am not 100% better, but I can sure see a difference. It takes the edge away from the nausea, that I-feel-like-I'm-going-to-throw-up feeling. But I still have the feeling that no food looks good. Anyway, I think the prescription is worth it for me, I would ask your doc about it.

Hello Angela, My heart goes out to you. With my 1st pregnancy, I had morning sickness for 5 1/2 months. Lost weight the first half of the pregnancy. The best advice I can give to you will sound impossible, but it does work. Eat very little amounts all through the day. Grazing! The morning is the hardest. I hate saltine crackers, but do like animal crackers. So I would nibble on one little cracker in the morning. Once I got that one down, I could eat the next one faster. After keeping a few of these down, I was able to eat a few bites of oatmeal. (Even the smell of some foods sent me running to the bathroom). Sometimes it would take an hour to eat just one cracker. Water is the same way. I started off getting very dehydrated, which will make the sickness worst, until I learned to sip water all day long. Carry a water bottle with you, and every 5 minutes take a sip. Set a goal for yourself to get through one bottle every 3-4 hours. The prescription meds were expensive, and I threw them up anyway, so this method was a blessing to me. I hope this is helpful to you. Good luck and congrats!!

Drink lots of water because no matter what you want to drink water lota of it. But not too much. Its normal to have these symptoms about food. I would snack on saltines work and Pretzels. Pretzels have been a savor for 3 of my pregnancies. Unfortunaly salt is a cure for nausea and something in the dough for pretzels and saltines settle the belly. So if you try to eat whatever it is that you made or your eating for dinner. Than eat some saltines to ease the upset belly. It only takes 3 or 4 crackers and your belly feels better. Good luck and try to eat slow too. Drink water!

I used Preggie Pop Drops. You can find them in the infant feeding section of Meijer (by the pacifiers, bottles, etc.). Thay are also at Motherhood Maternity. I think I may have seen them most recently at Babies R' Us, as well. They are all natural- not sure why they work, but they really helped me with baby #2! Good Luck, and congrats!

I boiled ginger root (coin size pieces) in water, put in a coffee cup and added a tea bag that sounds like it would go good with ginger and voila, no more nausea. It really worked doing the real deal with the ginger. Not just ginger flavored things. Good luck.

Zofran...its safe for you, safe for the baby, and it works wonders! Don't forget to take a B complex as well...that really helps cut down on the nausea too.

Good Luck!

UGH! Seems like yesterday! I have 3 kids-each pregnancy got worse! The last 2 were boys-I was soooo sick! Even the steam from the shower made me get sick! Try squirting lemon juice in your mouth every now and then-sounds terrible but it worked for me! I read it somewhere-tried it-and it would work for a while anyway. Something about sour?

Congratulations! I know the nausea can be horrible at times. I always had some Vernors around and sipped on that until I could hold down some oyster crackers. I let the oyster crackers sit for a bit then I got a small bag of M&M's with a glass of apple juice. I know it sounds wierd but it did the trick for me. If you can tolerate milk you might want to consider some Carnation Instant Breakfast. They have it in packs to add to milk or redi to drink cans. The powder you can mix cold, warm (hot chocolate)or even in a milkshake. The "Boost" weight management drinks also helped me a lot. Keep trying different things even if it seems like it would never go together and soon you'll find what works for you.

Good luck! Shari

Dramamine or Benadryl - they have the same active ingredients. I would check with your doctor first, but mine said it was ok and it worked wonders! I discovered after I took it for a flight and noticed my morning sickness disappeared.

I found that keeping a glass of ice water with me at all times and taking a few sips every time I felt a wave of nausea really helped make it pass. I also tried to eat something small every few hours, like a few crackers, pretzels, or a meal if I could handle it. I hope you make it through this phase quickly and get to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Try real ginger. Cut some and boil it and add sugar or honey to make a tea (I need to add the sweetnes, maybe you don't:). It is spicy, so experiment to see how you like it. Many "ginger ale"s don't have real ginger anymore. Just ginger flavoring.
