I am about 7 weeks pregnant with my second child. I had bad morning sickness with my first and I was hoping it would be different this time around but no such luck. And it wouldn't be so bad it if was actually only morning sickness but I sometimes feel queasy all day and get sick at different times of the day. I tried many things with my first pregnancy and nothing seemed to help. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of things I could try other than eating crackers because I think by this point crackers are making me sick.
Hi. I had morning sickness all day like you and it kept me from eating, so since I knew I needed to eat for the baby I had to do something. My doctor told me to take a regimen, as needed, of Unisom (a sleeping aid) and B6 (a vitamin) as a combination. You should ask your doctor though. I took one half of each pill together and it took care of the queaziness, but it also made me a little sleepy. So you'll have to decide how bad the situation actually is and if it's worth it. I only took it either once a day or twice a day depending on the severity. Also, I heard ginger takes away nausea and is natural. I know they've used the Unisom/B6 combo in Europe for many years and I've heard it's supposedly as harmless as tylenol while pregnant. But of course taking any kind of drug or supplement while pregnant is always questionable. But my son came out beautiful and healthy and intelligent if that helps. Good luck. Jodie
Hi...I also had incredible "morning" sickness...all day long! If there is anything that you would find mild and appealing to have at your bedside when you wake, it will surprisingly help a lot. My mother MADE me do it (she is a homeopathic nurse/doula) and it helped when I first woke up. Don't even sit up in bed before you grab something, even a little something, to put in your stomach. Believe me, it was hard for me because I have never been one to enjoy eating first thing in the morning. Ginger does help, in tea form helps a lot, also peppermint candies or gum. It is a natural remedy for nausea. When you are at home, or able, a cool rag on the back of your neck will help to calm your stomach and ease the dry heaves (if you get those). That's my suggestion! Just go with what feels right to eat when you get hungry. Your body will let you know what you need. And figure out when you feel best during the day, eat, and then take your prenatal vitamins. They made me so sick, too. Try a few kinds and you will hit on one that agrees with you...good luck! My second trimester was MUCH better.
Hi Leighane
I know you've heard this before but I think the best approach to take is putting something in your stomach before you even get out of bed. With my last pregnancy I had terrible bouts of morning sickness, dry heaves and all, and the nausea usually lasted throughout the day until I started eating right away. I know it's not the most healthy snack but I found CheezIts to be something I could actually stomach, and I know this sounds funny but Chocolate Milk! My sister actually recommended this because it helped her with her first pregnancy. I have read that the more protein the better when it comes to staving off nausea-so maybe some nuts or a boiled egg? You will probably get all sorts of advice about different foods but the important thing is finding something that works for you and just remember, this is not a permanent condition situation.
One other mom mentioned B6! I am 10 weeks and have had HORRID nausea and some vomiting as well (not comvenient at all if you already have other children or even have to go to work - I have 3 other children, too and never had it like this before)!! My Dr prescribed Fenergan. My pharmacist recommended taking 1/2 a pill that night and see how things went since it would make me drowsy. I have found that 1/2 a pill at night and then my B6 in the morning takes care of almost ALL the nausea!! If I forget it at night my next day is AWFUL! My life is so much easier with it so talk to your doctor - don't suffer!!
Bless your heart - I know we all feel for you. Try 1/4 t of ground ginger and 1 t honey in a cup of hot water or tea. I was pregnant 3 rimes while living in Germany - mashed potatoes without butter sometimes helps. Also, nuts (hazelnuts, almonds or cashews) might help. Good luck honey and God Bless.
I was sick all the time carrying my 3 children the only thing that cut the nausea was pure coke syrup on top of crushed ice. as you drink the syrup you also chew the ice and it would knock out the sick feeling. I couldn't have lived without it I was so sick. If you are diabetic don't drink this it is very sweet. You can get this syrup from the pharmacy just ask the pharmacist they usually keep it behind the counter.

Tums worked great for me and since they are full of calcium my doctor said they were good for the baby too. I had to keep a large bottle in my purse at all times until the 4th month. Also, go with the cravings. I have always hated grits even though I'm from the south but one morning sitting in a restauraunt sick as a dog and they settled my stomach in a matter of seconds. Crazy, but true.
With my child I too had all day sickness, that is how I found out I was prego...my doctor said eat what you want when you want it and never let your stomach go empty. I could smell anything and get sick. The only thing that stayed down was Gatorade, but after a couple of months it got much better and I could get up and eat instead of having Gatorade beside me 24x7. My child too came out healthy.
Good luck.
Leighane,
Ginger and mint worked really well for me! Motherhood Maternity sells these things called Preggie pops (I think Walmart has them as well - can't remember) which are sour flavored candies that also helped. I kept a big bag of starlight mints around as well and those just seemed to helped settle my stomache.
Hope this helps! I know that for me, the morning sickness was worse with the second one, but it was shorter in length!
Take care!
Kathy
Have you thought of trying to infuse a bit more protein? There are a couple of different schools of thought on why some women get morning sickness. One says that it's because of a lack of protein. If you think about it, all that is growing inside you is a big ball of protein - bone, muscle, etc. The best sources are milk, yogurt, eggs, nuts (almonds sometimes hit the spot for me) poultry and beef. Two eggs in the morning or a smoothie (banana, frozen fruit of your choice, a cup of yogurt and a 1/2 cup of OJ) might hit the spot. Also, make sure you eat lots of protein at dinner, which you can usually be sure of if you include a meat. The only other bit of advice I've heard is to have a snack before bed. A small bowl of cereal with milk, a glass of milk and crackers, a yogurt. Hope this helps!
I dont know how long your morning sickness will last but I have 4 children and I always looked at the morning sickness as a blessing. I have had 2 miscarriages. I know that when you have morning sickness it is a sign that your hormones are up there where they need to be for the baby. So when I had morning sickness I would just tell myself that it was a good thing for the baby. Mine only lasted the first trimester. Maybe yours will ease after then also. God Bless you. Jana Roberts
Leighane,
All three of my pregnancies was like 9 months of food poisoning each time - just horrible, couldn't even grocery shop. One of the things that got me thru it the last time was wintergreen Lifesavers. Something about the wintergreen flavor calmed things down. All I can say is give it a try, it can't hurt. Good luck!
Have you tried fresh cut lemons? I was sick all day with my first son. I was told to try lemons and it really did help. I hope you get relief soon. I know how miserable it can be to be so sick all day. Good luck!
Here's 3 ideas...the cheapest is to try ginger snap cookies. You might gain a few extra pounds, but ginger is supposed to really help wtih nausea. Second, Preggy Pops or Preggy Drops are citrus-flavored candy which I've heard really help some people. Motherhood Maternity stores sell them, as well as other maternity stores. The more expensive idea is a seasickness watch. I forget the brand name, but it costs around $90. You put it on your wrist and the magnet inside stimulates your nerves at the wrist, causing you to not feel nauseated (or seasick). You can search for it online. I think I got mine at drugstore.com.
Have you tried Preggie Pops? They're suckers that help w/ nausea. They worked pretty well for me. You can get them at Motherhood Maternity, and also you can order online. Good luck!
The only thing that worked for me was plain oatmeal or applesauce, or chocolate shakes. I have never understood the cracker thing when nauseous...I always find it hard to eat anything you have to chew when I'm nauseous.
If you aren't already, try a natural food-based prenatal vitamin instead of the man-made ones OBs tend to hand out & prescribe ... I recommend Rainbow Light Once Daily. It made a huge difference for me and for others I've known who took it.
I always took red respberry capsules-from the health food store. A friend told me they help strenghthen the uterus and prevent morning sickness. I never had morning sickness- on both pregnancies. Dont know if it was the capsules - or just me! Worth a try.

Oh, Honey! I feel your pain. I was sick with both of my kids pretty much all day for approx. 18 weeks. I then got the "sickness" back at the end of both pregnancies. I had "lemon drop candy" with me at all times. My doctor also told me that I could take 25 mg of vitamin B6 three times a day---it really worked---or helped I guess I should say. I would just recommend asking your OB first. If it is really severe, he or she can give you a perscription for something too. Good luck!
