I am only 6 weeks pregnant, and for the past 2 weeks, I have not been able to eat anything. I am sick morning, noon, and night, and even wake up at night sick. Everything I eat and drink gets thrown up. I am worried that this is not going to end soon. I have tried eating crackers, fruits and veggies, and taking vitamin b6 pills. None of these helped. Does anyone have any advice on something else to try? I am so hungry, yet nothing seems to work. Please help!
okay...this happened to me too...if I got sick in the morning I was sick all day long...and I could never figure out why they call it morning sickness, when it can happen ANYTIME...I truly thought morning sickness was in the morning...
brushing my teeth was the worst...it would do it to me every time. It might take a month or so before you actually don't get the 'morning sickness'...usually the first & third trimesters are the ones prone to sickness.
the fruits and veggies may be too acidic right now...odd but the same thing happened to me. I could eat strawberries, that was it.
things that worked GREAT for me...
vanilla waffers (not regular crackers and I could only eat one or two), pepermint candies, YOUGART of any kind, (I actually lived off yougart for the first and third trimesters.)
you could also leave a bottle of water next to your bed and take a drink every morning before you even get out of bed....
CONGRATULATIONS & Good Luck!
I just went through my 2nd month. I was sick all day too, but was luckily only nauseated and threw up just a few times. I found I had to eat little by little all day since I was getting sick every time I ate. So each time I started to feel nauseous, I would not eat any more. I would just sit and relax. Take some deep breaths and try not to puke. Not thinking about vomiting helped too. I found that the more I thought about it, the more likely it would happen. I realized that I could not drink when I ate; the bubbles drinking put in my stomach during eating made me nauseous. And I drink mostly water! I also realized that if I waited too long to eat and let myself get too hungry, it would make me nauseous! Pretzels were nice to have by the bed so I could eat a few before getting up in the morning. I now make sure I eat first thing in the morning before anything else. When I was sick, I let the housework go since moving around can make nausea worse and spent most of my day eating little by little. It was not fun, but I am almost done with the third month and it has gotten much better. I hope you feel better soon!
Hi Jennifer,
First of all, congratulations! Children are a blessing from God! I was told to try 1/2 tablet of Unisom(edited correction) along with the B6 before bedtime every night, but double check with your OB/GYN first to see what their recommendations are and ask them about the one I just said because I can't remember exactly if it was a half tab. They also have a list of safe medications to take while pregnant. Also to sip on fluids not drink alot at one time and nibble on crackers (I only ate graham crackers). Also to before you get out of bed, try to nibble on a cracker when before you get up. It's important to sip throughout the day to prevent dehydration. Also, try small meals, several times a day or light snacking throught the day. I also got those wristbands with the pressure points on them and that actually helped me in one of my pregnancies.
I have 4 kids and have had morning sickness with all 4. The last one I was hospitalized for 3 days because of it. I ended up having to get medicine that they prescribe to people that are going through chemotherapy for their nausea. Mine always lasted between the 12-16 week period but hopefully yours won't.
Make sure you call you OB/GYN for some help too because they also have remedies. Good luck with the new baby!

I lost 20 punds or more in both my pregnancies with vomiting - you need to tell your doctor. They will give you some meds to slow it down for you....
I also found myself sick all day with both of my pregnancies. It should end by the second trimester but I know thats not much consolation now. I found that sipping on a slimfast shake helped settle my stomach. I figured it had more vitamins and minerals than saltine crackers and it really worked for me. I agree that you should call your doctor if nothing is working. Both you and the baby need nutrition in these early weeks!
I had horrible morning sickness with my daughter for 5 months and I am currently 27 weeks with my second and was sick for 4 months. The only thing that made me feel like I could atleast take a shower was to take unisom and a vitamin called premsis that my doctor prescribed and then I took Zofran during the day. It didn't make me feel great, but I helped me to stop throwing up. Also, if I ate frequent small meals that helped too. I literally had to gag some of them down, but if my stomach was empty I felt worse. I even had to keep a box of granola bars or a banana next to the bed to eat at around 4 am to keep from being sick in the morning. I hope some of this helps. Hang in there. I know it feels like it is never going to go away, but trust me it does. You should start to notice you feel better around 16 weeks when the hormones taper off.
Have you considered seeing a homeopath? It was the only thing that worked for me while I was pregnant. it is much safer and more holistic than anything a regular doctor can offer.
I see one in St.Paul - if your interested her website is www.beyondwell.com, she is wonderful.
congratulations!
when i was pregnant with my son, i was terribly nauseous. the only thing that helped me was lemon & ginger. i drank lemon propel water by the gallon, ate lemon jellybeans, sucked on lemon drops...
if all else fails, seeing your doctor is a good idea before you get too far along. good luck...
I, too, am pregnant (12 weeks) and my doctor recommended trying either b6 or Unisom. He said most women opt for the Vitamin B6 because obviously Unisom can cause drowsiness. BUT...if nothing else is working maybe it would be worth it to give the Unisom a try? My doctor says it works :) Good luck!
I was sooo sick for the first four months. I was actually diagnosed with Hyperemesis and was put on I.V. treatments and Zofran. If you cant keep anything down, including fluids call your doctor or midwife as soon as possible. You don't want to get dehyrated. I was told to eat whatever sounds good. Try not to drink fluids and eat at the same time. Eat many small meals. Try to stay sitting for at least 30 minutes after eating. And if you want other ideas goole Hyperemesis there was a lot of information out there on how to deal with the nausea and vomiting. But just remember that no mater how sick you are you'll have a beautiful baby before you know it! Good luck and Congratulations!
Have you tried eating tiny meals every two hours? Sometimes your tummy can only handle small amounts at a time. And by eating every two hours, you aren't letting your tummy get empty either. I can't tell you that this will stop eventually. My morning sickness always ended by three months, but my youngest daughter was sick almost the whole time. But I will pray that yours will end soon. And talk to the dr. Maybe He can suggest something too if you tell him how sick you are and NOTHING stays down.
HTH, Gina
With my first one even the smells of food made me sick. With my second one, someone recommended "sea bands" which are these black bands you wear around your wrists and put pressure on a pressure point that calms morning sickness. I was amazed it worked for me. They are sold in most local Walgreens or drugstores by the sickenss medication. Just make sure you try to eat crackers before you get out of bed and stay hydrated. If you cannot keep anything down at all talk to your doc and he can prescribe a medication for you.
My OB prescribed zofran for me - it's expensive if you don't have full prescription coverage, but it works wonders. It's a tiny pill, instant dissolve so there's no pills to swallow, works for 12 hrs.
I lived on vitamin water my entire twin pregnancy, I was sick for the entire 8 mos. I trated my body as is I had the flu. Kept myself hydrated, ate a lot of chicken soup (lots of good vitamins for babies in there). I ate what I was hungry for, stayed away from fried foods, breads, anything citrousy or spicy. My twins were 7# at birth too.
There is also an age-old remedy that worked for me in my past singleton pregnancies. Take 1/2 unisom gel tab with a vitamin B6 tablet, at night. The gel tabs cut nicely.
I really suggest calling your OB, he knows your body best and probably could prescribe something for you.
I had a lot of sickness during my first trimester, too. I found I felt sicker when I was getting hungry, and that if I ate constantly I felt a lot better. I kept crackers and cookies and cereal in my desk at work, in my purse, and next to my bed. Whenever I'd start to feel hungry or queasy, I'd eat, lol.
Try ginger cookies. My favs are the Mi-Del ones that I get at the co-op. Lots of ginger and they're pretty hard, so I could almost suck on them. Ginger is great stomach calmer. Also I found a ginger cereal and ate that dry. A good friend suggested dry cereal to me and it really helped in the morning.
Are you taking a pre-natal vitamin? Mine made me SO queasy! I could only take it with a ton of milk and while I was eating, otherwise it would come right back up.
Be sure to talk to your doc and see if they can help. Good luck!
I have heard that taking the prenatal vitamins really helps with morning sickness. Not sure if you are already taking them or not, but if not, start and maybe it will help?! Good luck and congratulations!
one thing...ZOFRAN...it now has a generic which is MUCH CHEAPER....
Hi Jennifer,
My sister is also a very sick pregnant. Her doctor put her on a schedule of Zofran. (They now have a generic).
It saved her. I work in a pharmacy and see that it's very common for a pregnant woman to be put on it.
I hope this helps.
Lisa
=Hi Jennifer -
Congratulations! I was the same way with both my pregnancies. My doc put me on Zofran -its an anti nausea medicine that is safe to take. I would talk with your ob/gyn!!
I also took Ginger tablets (you can get them at Target) and those seem to help alot. Hang in there!! Susan
Dear Jennifer,
I had really bad morning sickness with my first two children. I was told to try ginger root. It looked weird and I thought it would be really nasty, however, the taste was not as bad as I thought and it helped! You should be able to find it in any grocery store. Also, with my second child, I tried Dramamine (which is for car sickness) and it also worked. Again, taste is not so good, but it works. Here are some other suggestions I got off the internet (my youngest is 5 1/2 so some of these new "treatments" are ones I have not tried):
antacids that are low in sodium and available over-the-counter
vitamin B6 (check with your doctor before taking any vitamins)
sugar solution that is available over-the-counter
acupressure wristbands (used for seasickness)
antihistamine (prescribed by a doctor) only if the following concerns are evident: persistent vomiting, insufficient weight gain and signs of dehydration
Also, you can check out this website. They have products you can purchase (like preggie pops, accupressure wristbands, etc) that can help with naseau:

Also, please read the info below. I never heard of this while I was pregnant. Must be something they have found within the past 5-6 years.
What if I just can't keep anything down?
Call your provider if you haven't been able to keep anything — including fluids — down for 24 hours. (If you're newly pregnant and don't yet have a doctor or midwife, go to the emergency room.)
You may have a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum — literally, "excessive vomiting in pregnancy." This condition can be difficult to manage, but the sooner you're diagnosed and begin treatment, the more likely you'll be able to avoid severe symptoms.
Good luck and remember: it doesn't last for the whole pregnancy and once you hold your little one, all the pains and aches will be worth it. Take care and congratulations!
